2413 Creekridge Drive McKinney, Texas 75070-7792 April 1, 2004 Featherkile The surname Featherkile [Featherkoil, Featherkyle, Fethercile, Fetherkile, etc] is mentioned in sundry records. Featherkile appears to be an anglicized spelling of the German name Federkiel. Federkiel in German means a feather quill used in writing and comes from the words feder (feather) and kiel (quill or straw). The surname in the United States is extremely rare. Later immigrants from Germany preserved the German spelling of their name as shown in more recent US censuses. For example: Andrew Federkiel was born August 30, 1853 in Lichsbadt, Baden, Germany; died Sandusky, Sandusky County, OH, July 10, 1910. Andrew Federkiel married in Huron, OH, July 7, 1879, Mary Zimmerman. The family of Eulila Featherkile shown below probably arrived in American about 1775- 1780. Personal Property Tax Lists commence in Virginia in the year 1782 and purport to list the names of all white male residents of each county, each year, and their personal property such as slaves, horses, cattle, etc. The Land Tax lists were rendered also each year separately. These (adult) males were also required to list their sons (by name or number) as they became age 16 and until they became age 21 at which time they would then list themselves as adults and in their own responsibility. Kentucky became a state in 1792. The first permanent settlement was in 1774 at Harrodsburg. Uley Featherkile probably is a female and widow of an unknown Featherkile— there are conflicting statements regarding this. In the 1792 Nelson Co., KY Tax List Euly Fetherkele is taxed on 50 acres and is not taxed for white males 21 and over and is not taxed for white males 16-21. In 1792 George Fetherkele was taxed for one white male 21 and over and no acreage. 12 Eulily Featherkile was taxed for one white male 16-21 years of age on July 28, 1800, and 50 acres; George Featherkile was taxed June 26, 1800 for one white male 21 years of age and over.
