WALKS WITH ELYSE “When Toulouse Tried to be Paris“- a look at the lovely architecture from Nouveau, to Grand Style to Deco as an imitation of Parisian architecture Wednesday November 12th at 10am - noon - Beginning of rue Alsace Lorraine (metro Jeanne d'Arc, line B) ToulouseGuidedWalks is very happy to announce a revisiting of one of our favorites – a look at the architecture and details of the buildings of the 19th century, part of the rich heritage of the “new” Toulouse. What happened in the second half of the 19th century that made Toulouse completely change its style of architecture? Why are some lovely buildings made not of the orange brick of medieval Toulouse but of a pale beige yellow brick? Have you ever noticed that some of the elegant buildings on the large avenues ressemble Parisian buildings? What happened that suddenly, after centuries of Toulouse style, the city started to look like an imitation Paris? And what about the curves over the doorways, the iron railings, the colored ceramic used as decoration – where did all that come from? Come and join me for this lovely morning of discovery – how the strange mix of old and new was redefined in Toulouse and how the city's architects managed to incorporate some art nouveau, some regionalism styles, some art more or less deco, in a pastiche of “northern” architecture. Walk up and down some city streets and discover the many small details of houses that you might have never noticed before. We should have a lovely morning for this walk – So come and sign up soon. See you all there on Wednesday, the 12th of November 15€/person. Reservations required Contact Elyse for Toulouse guided walks at [email protected] to reserve your spot soon! Voluptuous Orientalism: the paintings of Benjamin Constant Friday November 21st from 10am - noon ToulouseGuidedWalks is very happy to announce that we are going to have a second date for the guided visit of the fabulous new exhibit of painting at the Augustins museum of Toulouse.A rare, joint venture with the Museum of Art of Montreal in Canada, with a collection of rarely seen canvases by one of the masters of Orientalist painting, this is a really special occasion! Benjamin Constant was an artist first trained in Toulouse who went on to have an international career. His works are in the Orsay museum in Paris as well as in many museum collections all over France and in North America. His work, figurative and colorful, very sensual, lent itself to a new mode or movement in painting that was in vogue at the end of the 19th century: Orientalism. This movement was inspired by the voyages of some artists who traveled to Morocco, Egypt and Algeria and found the landscape, the colors, the light and the “exotic” women much to their taste. After coming back to France many artists spent a few years painting with live models and also from their imaginations; scenes of women in harem, odalisques (see the work of Ingres) or battle scenes with the Moors and their horses as central figures. Benjamin Constant became famous for his works and many were bought up by rich families from North America. There are a couple of his major works in the collection of the Augustins, but this is the first time that so many of his works are being put together in a major exhibit! The colors are beautiful, the work is resplendent, the view of women is very 19th century, and these works offer an opportunity to travel to a strange, partially imaginary world. Come and join me for this wonderful morning program. We will be able to see the works before too many people show up later in the day – this is going to be a very popular exhibit. All spots need to be reserved and pre-paid for this special event. Please contact Elyse as soon as possible to reserve. Contact her at [email protected] or contact her at her Facebook page for ToulouseGuidedWalks. (do not send a check until your reservation has been confirmed) Looking forward to seeing you there for this incredible show of Orientalism painting. 25€/person.
