They represent an extraordinary effort that involves and affects all of us— Campaign Oregon: Transforming Lives. The campaign is providing the vital resources we need to bring our financial base, our facilities and programs, and our national reputation up to the level of our outstanding faculty and staff members. In recent years, your resourcefulness and your willingness to collaborate and innovate have helped keep the university moving forward in the face of reductions in state financial support. The other important factor in moving forward has been—and will continue to be— private gifts. It is increasingly clear that, in the years to come, philanthropy will be the source of investment capital that will take us to new levels of distinction. In addition to the service you give the university every day, I know that many of you helped develop the goals and priorities for the campaign and helped promote the initiative to our alumni and friends. As of the end of October, we raised more than $373 million toward the $600-million campaign goal. We still have a long way to go in meeting the overall goal, the sub-goals, and your specific priorities. But campaign gifts are already having a considerable impact on campus: new student scholarships, new endowed faculty chairs and professorships, new buildings, new support for teaching and research. This is only the beginning of what we can all accomplish together. I thank you for what you have already done and what you do every day to transform lives on this campus. I entreat you to imagine how much farther we can go and how you can help us get there. It’s our Oregon, and through our actions today, we will determine the university’s future.

A first-generation college student, the recent UO graduate from Creswell, Oregon, doubts he would have attended the university without the PathwayOregon promise—a guarantee to qualified Pell Grant-eligible Oregonians that tuition and fees will be covered for four years. The scholarship program also offers academic and career support, as well as peer assistance programs. As a mentor, Cosme helped fellow students navigate college life. “It’s just a small thing to give back to the program that’s given so much to me and other people,” he says. Dream Granted As a senior at Creswell High School, Cosme was student body president, captain of the soccer team, and cosalutatorian. But, as he puts it, “Going to college was just like a dream.” Cosme’s best friend—the other salutatorian—also received a PathwayOregon scholarship.

No UO graduate has ever majored in student unions, but it would be hard to find a Duck whose college experience wasn’t somehow shaped by the EMU. Since it first opened in 1950, the EMU has provided a place to study, eat, and gather. However, for a residential campus, a student union also means much more. It is a vital part of the university’s vision to create a vibrant community of scholars. Because the EMU has been revitalized through recent renovations, is the heart of the UO campus, and is the top place on campus where students feel like they belong, the present research was designed to explore how students use and what students think and feel about the places that comprise the union. Place-Based Belonging Through the present research as well as the Student Wellbeing and Success Initiative (SWaSI) research program, the Office of Assessment & Research (OAR) within the Division of Student Life is beginning to explore a novel aspect of belongingness. OAR is calling it place-based belonging to represent the idea that people’s sense of belonging (i.e., of fitting in and being connected to others) has much to do with the physical places where human interaction occurs.
