Jane Smith, Chief Executive of the FTO: “This is a stunning result for the New South Wales film and television industry. The FTO congratulates all of the NSW nominees and wishes them well for the AFI Awards in December.” CANDY, which received production investment from the FTO, and JINDABYNE, developed with the assistance of the FTO, were both nominated for Best Film. SUBURBAN MAYHEM, also made with FTO investment, received 12 nominations, the most for any single film. The nominations are for Best Direction (Paul Goldman), Best Original Screenplay (Alice Bell), Best Cinematography (Robert Humphreys), Best Editing (Stephen Evans), Best Sound (Liam Egan, Phil Judd & Steven Jackson-Vaughan), Best Original Music Score (Mick Harvey), Best Production Design (Nell Hanson), Best Costume Design (Melinda Doring), Best Lead Actress (Emily Barclay), Best Supporting Actor (Anthony Hayes), Best Supporting Actress (Genevieve Lemon) and Young Actor Award (Mia Wasikowska.) As well as the Best Film nomination for producers April Films and Catherine Jarman, JINDABYNE has also been nominated for Best Direction (Ray Lawrence), Best Adapted Screenplay (Beatrix Christian), Best Cinematography (David Williamson), Best Sound (Andrew Plain, Peter Grace, Nada Mikis, Peter Miller, Linda Murdoch & Robert Sullivan),Best Original Music Score (Paul Kelly and Dan Luscombe), Best Lead Actor (Gabriel Byrne), Best Lead Actress (Laura Linney) and Best Supporting Actress (Deborra-lee Furness). CANDY, nominated for Best Film for producers Margaret Fink and Emile Sherman, received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay (Luke Davies and Neil Armfield), Best Editing (Dany Cooper), Best Production Design (Robert Cousins), Best Lead Actor (Heath Ledger), Best Lead Actress (Abbie Cornish), Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush) and Best Supporting Actress (Noni Hazlehurst). THE BOOK OF REVELATION, which received production investment from the FTO, was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay (Ana Kokkinos & Andrew Bovell), Best Original Music Score (Cezary Skubiszewski) and Best Costume Design (Anna Borghesi). In television, RAN (Remote Area Nurse) received nine nominations. RAN, which received production investment from the FTO, was nominated for Best Telefeature or Mini Series (Penny Chapman), Best Screenplay in Television (Sue Smith), Best Lead Actor in Television Drama (Charles Passi), Best Lead Actress in Television Drama (Susie Porter), Best Guest or Supporting Actor in Television Drama (Luke Carroll, Aaron Fa’aoso), Best Guest or supporting Actress in Television Drama (Margaret Harvey, Merwez Whaleboat), Outstanding Achievement in Television Screen Craft (Ian Jones - Cinematography). Emily Barclay received a second AFI nomination as Best Guest or Supporting Actress in Television Page 1 of 5 Drama for the television drama THE SILENCE. THE SILENCE was also nominated for Best Telefeature or Mini (Jan Chapman) and Best Lead Actor in a Television Drama (Richard Roxburgh). The FTO invested in production of THE SILENCE and was one of the original investors in LOVE MY WAY, which again this year received several nominations. The FTO also invested in the Gillian Armstrong-directed documentary UNFOLDING FLORENCE – THE MANY LIVES OF FLORENCE BROADHURST. Gillian Armstrong has been nominated for Best Direction in a Documentary. The film also received nominations for Visual Effects Award (Simon Rippingale, Tim Richter and Nina Gibbs) and Best Sound in a Documentary (Annie Breslin, Gethin Creagh, Paul Finlay and Paul Grabowsky). Another NSW documentary, HUNT ANGELS, has been nominated for Best Documentary (Sue Maslin), Best Direction in a Documentary (Alec Morgan), Best Cinematography in a Documentary (Jackie Farkas) and Visual Effects Award (Rose Draper and Mike Seymour). BLUE WATER HIGH has been nominated for Best Children’s Television Drama (Noel Price and Dennis Kiely). Short films produced under the FTO’s Young Filmmakers Fund have received four nominations. A NATURAL TALENT has been nominated for Best Screenplay in a Short Film (Louise Fox) and Outstanding Achievement in Short Film Screen Craft (Skye Wansey – acting). John Polson (Swimfan, Hide and Seek) and Serena Paull, the dynamic team behind Tropfest, will team up with Lynda House (Muriel’s Wedding) to produce the film with writer/director Peter Carstairs. Set in the outback wheat-belt in 1968, SEPTEMBER is a coming-of-age story about two 15 year old boys — one black, one white — whose pure and unaffected friendship falls apart under the pressures of the turbulent social changes happening around them. Shooting will take place this November/December in Boorowa, Yass and Harden. SEPTEMBER is scheduled for completion in June 2007.     Making our own—two ethnographies of the vernacular in New Zealand music: tramping club singsongs and the Māori guitar strumming style by Michael Brown A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington/Massey University in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music New Zealand School of Music 2012 ii Abstract This work presents two ethnographies of the vernacular in New Zealand music. The ethnographies are centred on the Wellington region, and deal respectively with tramping club singsongs and the Māori guitar strumming style. As the first studies to be made of these topics, they support an overall argument outlined in the Introduction, that the concept of ―vernacular‖ is a valuable way of identifying and understanding some significant musical phenomena hitherto neglected in New Zealand music studies. ―Vernacular‖ is conceptualised as an informal, homemade approach that enables people to customise music-making, just as language is casually manipulated in vernacular speech. The different theories and applications which contribute to this perspective, taken from music studies and other disciplines, are examined in Chapter 1. A review of relevant New Zealand music literature, along with a methodological overview of the ethnographies is presented in Chapter 2. Each study is based upon different mixtures of techniques, including participant-observer fieldwork, oral history, interviews, and archival research. They can be summarised as follows: Tramping club singsongs: a medium of informal self-entertainment among New Zealand wilderness recreationists in the mid-twentieth century. The ethnography focuses on two clubs in the Wellington region, the Tararua Tramping Club and the Victoria University College Tramping Club, during the 1940s-1960s period, when changing social mores, tramping‘s camaraderie and individualism, and the clubs‘ different approaches, gave their singsongs a distinctive character.

In the vein of Stone’s The Wild Duck, a sell-out at both Belvoir and Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre, Strange Interlude will be completely rewritten. Strange Interlude is one of the few modern plays to use soliloquy interwoven with the dialogue, revealing the characters’ inner thoughts; this technique will be maintained in the rewrite. Twenty-year-old Nina Leeds (Emily Barclay) has lost the love of her life in the war. Overcome with grief, she quits university, falls out with her father and moves away from home. What follows is an epic and compelling narrative that spans 25 years in Nina’s life, but the story is compressed into a series of heightened, life altering moments. The significance of each of these moments is revealed as the page-turning story unravels. The cast assembled for this production is truly stellar, with the luminous Emily Barclay as Nina and Mitchell Butel, Toby Schmitz and Toby Truslove as three men in her life, each vying for her attention and affection in his own way.
