Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.

Mi preme ringraziare il direttore Roberto Sinibaldi per l’attenzione prestata alle attività di Comunicazione, che hanno consentito all’Ente Parco uno straordinario salto di qualità sia in termini di servizi resi al cittadino sia in termini di autorevolezza acquisita. Taking several cultural heritage research projects as examples (the cryptoporticus, the theatre of the Villa Domitian in Castel Gandolfo and the “Musensaal” in the Faustina baths in Milet), we discuss how archaeological requirements and current technical practices affect the limitations of 3D recon- struction and visualization approaches. In response, some technical visions will be introduced to illustrate some possibilities for overcoming several of these limitations. Lelo2 1 Department of Architecture, Roma Tre University of Rome, Via Madonna dei Monti, 40, 00184 Roma, Italy 2 Department of Economics, Roma Tre University of Rome, Via Silvio d’Amico, 77, 00145 Roma, Italy Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Lazio Region is carrying out a re-industrialization policy following the Europe 2020 targets for economic growth, known as Smart Specialization Strategy (S3). This paper frames industrial policy settings dating back to the second half of the 20th Century in the light of current processes and institutional efforts to set a new season for Industry in Lazio Region. Subsequently, relying upon demographic and socio-economic dynamics over the last two decades, new features in settlement patterns and sector-specific obstacles to sustainable development are addressed with a major focus on the Metropolitan area of Rome (the former Province of Rome). In conclusion, some remarks are drawn mindful of the new globalization wave affecting ‘supply chains’ of goods and business services from all over the world, of current trends and innovative approaches liable to envisage ‘territory’ as an opportunity rather than a cost. Difficulties in making different opinions to converge are evident. The proper ground to make it happen should be prepared by a governance able to support place-based inherent ‘entrepreunerial discovery processes’, while providing negotiating practices framed by general and sectoral policies, and communication approaches to ensure transparency and participation of public at large. Chiara Lubich and the youth. Those of yesterday who believed in us. Those of today, ready to give their life with generosity. Sunday 11 march 2012 – time 16.00-18.00 Castelgandolfo (ROME) – Auditorium of the Mariapolis Center LINK-UP VIA INTERNET http://www.chiaralubich.org/ The most varied events are being promoted by the Focolare Movement to commemorate the foundress, Chiara Lubich, 4 years after her passing away: events of an ecumencial or interreligious nature, cultural conventions or gatherings whose language is music. The impact of the charism in the field of economics will be studied in depth in many places, while elsewhere the theme “communication in the era of new media: the style of Chiara Lubich” will be presented. Everywhere, too, there will be moments of encounter and there will be many religious celebrations that will gather, in the cities as well as in the villages, the Focolare communities but not only. In this mosaic, a particular importance will be given to the event that will gather together a crowd of all ages, at the Auditorium of the Mariapolis Center of Castelgandolfo, near Rome. The youth are especially awaited. “Chiara and the new generations”, the relationship that she has established, the horizons she has opened, the trust with which she formed them, the hope that she placed in them, the reciprocity she has generated.
