FREE STAR WARS VOLUME 1: IN THE SHADOW OF YAVIN PDF Brian Wood,Carlos D'Anda | 152 pages | 04 Oct 2013 | Titan Books Ltd | 9781783290291 | English | London, United Kingdom Star Wars Volume 1: In the Shadow of Yavin TPB :: Profile :: Dark Horse Comics The Death Star was destroyed and the Rebellion had solidified itself as a legitimate threat to the Galactic Empire. Adrenaline can only carry a rag- tag group of freedom fighters so far, and as the films credits rolled our heroes were left to cope with heavy losses in private. In the Shadow of Yavinthe first volume in a new series from Dark Horse set in the era immediately following of A New Hope puts these themes front and center. The Rebellion, in its superficial moment of triumph, is weaker than ever. The base on Yavin IV has been compromised and abandoned, leaving the Rebels Star Wars Volume 1: in the Shadow of Yavin through space and searching desperately for a new home while the Empire hunts them with renewed purpose. Meanwhile deep in Imperial space Han is assigned to do what he does best, work the criminal underbelly at the behest of Mon Mothma. On the Imperial capitol world of Coruscant this all goes to hell and Han and Chewie find themselves on the wrong end of an Imperial double-cross and stranded in the lower levels of Coruscant with a couple of fan-favorite bounty hunters on their tails. We find Darth Vader demoted to babysitting the second Death Star being constructed over Endor and trying to wrap his head around that whole Luke Skywalker thing. Wood manages to write these iconic characters without any of their mythic sheen, capturing the tone of who they all were within this world before they became the legends we tend to see them revered as. The women are all too perfect, the men all too square-jawed and all of them lose the personality that the actors brought to the roles. Even Vader and Threepio seem to have been somehow made more generically comic-ified. Review by Tony Pacitti Writer: J. Your email address will not be published. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. In the first chapter of this six-part story, Wood justifies why Leia is a leader of the Rebellion and not just a figurehead like her mentor Mon Motha. She takes down an enemy fighter all on her on. This princess is an X-Wing fighter ace and she has no time for Luke Skywalker's patronizing tone. There's a lot more to this collectedd edition but really, this is more about Prin I really enjoyed the first arc of Brian Wood's Star Wars or as I would like to say, "The Badassification of Princess Leia". There's a lot more to this collectedd edition but really, this is more about Princess Leia who gets to shine along with the big boys. Dark Horse comics picked the right writer Star Wars Volume 1: in the Shadow of Yavin what could be its swan song in the Star Wars Universe. The comicbook license is already Marvel's and we've seen the end of an era of quality licensed comicbooks. View 2 comments. Jul 15, Wendy rated it liked it Shelves: star-warsnetgalleycomics-manga. Expanded Universe EU stories extend into the distant past and the distant future and everything in between, but it seems that the legacy is returning to its roots with a series of new stories focusing on Han, Leia and Luke, directly following A New Hope. The most impressive aspect of this story is that it dives right into the fact that both Luke and Leia just watched their lives and the people they loved catastrophically destroyed. Things like that tend to weigh on you, particularly Leia, who was forced to watch the destruction of her entire planet shortly after hours of rigorous torture at the hands of Darth Vader. This focuses heavily on the fact that Leia has not been allowed, nor allowed herself the time to deal because the situation is still dire. The destruction of the Death Star has only increased pressure on the Rebel Alliance and her role as a leader means she is constantly working and constantly needing to prove herself. The pressure rises even more when Mon Mothma tasks her with forming and leading a black ops team of pilots. Their purpose: find a new location for the Rebel base and root out the traitor in their midst. Leia herself gets to fly the sleek new X-Wings, revealing yet another of her skills. Luke is played up a bit more as the cocky kid we saw in A New Hoperather than the more subdued and stoic Luke that starts to develop in The Empire Strikes Back. His attitude reminds us that he is barely twenty years Star Wars Volume 1: in the Shadow of Yavin, so his actions are somewhat understandable. But that means that Leia is the same age, revealing the stark contrast of maturity and responsibility between them. I would have liked to see far more that conflict, but instead, we get the more simplistic love triangle plot device that plays out weakly for all involved. Meanwhile, the fallout from Yavin has affected others as well. Namely, Darth Vader, whom the Emperor is pretty mad at for letting a wee X-Wing blow up an Star Wars Volume 1: in the Shadow of Yavin space station. And last, but certainly not least, is Han Solo. Joining up with the Rebels has tagged him and Chewie, their career as neutral smuggler and leaving them no other options but to continue working with the Alliance. Mon Mothma has entrusted him with a significant amount of credits to broker a deal with a contact. Is Han worthy of that trust? Overall, I liked the elements of the characters and story that are introduced. There is a lot of potential for interesting intrigue and character development, with some reasonably good gun and dogfights tossed in Star Wars Volume 1: in the Shadow of Yavin good measure. With thanks to NetGalley and Darkhorse Comics for the opportunity to read this graphic novel. Dark Horse Comics started publishing comic books for Star Wars in I can only imagine that this was a bittersweet time for fans. On one hand, it was probably cool that the SWEU was coming back to Marvel, which originally ran the Star Wars comic book series from to In a sense, it was kind of liking coming home. The good news is that many of these series are available in compendium editions that compile six or seven issues per volume. I recently started reading some of these Dark Horse SWEU titles, never having read them during their initial run, and the quality of the stories and artwork range from mediocre to excellent. The series starts off with an intense Star Wars Volume 1: in the Shadow of Yavin battle in which Princess Leia? Wedge Antilles, Luke Skywalker, and Leia decide to create a stealth squadron, with the support of Mon Mothma, which would take direct orders from Mothma and conduct top-secret black ops missions. Somewhere within the ranks of the Rebel Alliance there is a leak, because top-secret intel is continuously falling into the hands of the Empire.
