Already going through 2019 without a traditional closer, the Boston bullpen found itself taxed less than a month in. That made David Price’s sparkler Sunday badly needed. Price (1-1, 3.79 ERA) went seven innings on an efficient 92 pitches, 64 of them for strikes. He gave up no runs and only three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. More, he set things up nicely for Ryan Brasier to pitch the eighth and Matt Barnes to pitch the ninth in an economical 4-0 Red Sox win against the Orioles. “Everybody knew where we were pitching-wise today and for [Price] to go seven, give the ball to those last two guys, it was very important for us,” said manager Alex Cora. “Now tomorrow we kind of reset and we’re ready for the game tomorrow.” Baltimore starter John Means went five innings and gave up just one run but the Red Sox did the bulk of their scoring against Orioles relievers in the eighth inning when Xander Bogaerts hit a hanging slider off Josh Lucas to the batter’s eye for a three-run home run. “I was looking for off-speed the whole at-bat,” Bogaerts said. “After he threw me that first slider I thought [darn], I might be struck out right now because his first slider was nasty.

Athletes from across Latin America, once signed, begin at this first level of Minor League Baseball to prove their sporting abilities, learn English and become consummate professionals. This thesis concerns both the history of the United States (U.S.)-D.R. relationship through the lens of baseball, and ethnographic fieldwork completed at one MLB academy in the D.R. in summer 2019. The research included watching Dominican Summer League games, touring the facility, interviewing staff and sitting in on a high school equivalency course. It analyzes various so-called ‘signs of universality’ as to how baseball is played worldwide: language/ritual, camaraderie, food, education and masculinity. The historical context surrounding the relationship between the nations shows how the baseball academy is one just type of neoliberal and neocolonial enclave in the Dominican Republic. Concluding thoughts cover where this system stands as of 2020 and what can be done to ensure ideal conditions for these teenage players. Keywords: anthropology of sport; U.S.-D.R.

    The Boston Red Sox Thursday, April 2, 2020 * The Boston Globe Why a shortened baseball season works in the Red Sox’ favor Peter Abraham Thursday was supposed to be the home opener at Fenway Park, a 2:05 p.m. tilt against Yoan Moncada and the newly competitive Chicago White Sox. The sellout crowd would have been eager to see the Red Sox regardless of how they played in the first seven games of the season. For one day, just being back in Fenway and seeing those crisp white home uniforms would have been enough. But if there is a home opener this year, it’s not going to be for a long time. Major League Baseball has officially pushed the season back until at least mid-May because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a more realistic appraisal is sometime in June or July. The idea of a brief spring training in June and then a July 4 Opening Day is something MLB officials privately believe is plausible. Their goal is to start the season when fans would be allowed at ballparks, but the idea of playing in empty stadiums has been discussed. It’s impossible to say how it will turn out, given how quickly the news about the pandemic changes. But as eager as we all are to see baseball, playing an abbreviated season could be an advantage to the Red Sox. They’ll never acknowledge that, but it’s true. Fewer games would mean less exposure for a shaky rotation that was further weakened Monday when Chris Sale had Tommy John surgery.

Following the departure of our former Editor-in-Chief and some writers, Scepter was in a precarious position. Here, I was thrust into the Production Editor role of Editor-in-Chief unexpectedly. Things were in Violetta Brin disarray. I, alongside our Production Editor, Violetta Brin, had to calculate our next move and bring the paper back into circulation. I was fortunate enough Business Manager to have our advisor Patrick Hickey Jr., with former Tyree Hunter Editor-in-Chief Matt Hirsch and new Managing Editor, Ellis Santoro, to help create a new game plan. We appointed new board members, assembled a small Staff Writers team of writers and got to work. Matt Hirsch Through grit and patience, we managed to pull together an issue that superseded our expectations.     Luke 13:10-17 August 21, 2016 “Bat Flip” Rev. Lou Nyiri Just a few weeks ago, our family spent the afternoon in Cooperstown, New York – our primary stop being the Baseball Hall of Fame. It. Was. Incredible. Three or four floors chronicling and celebrating the great game of baseball. If you’re like me, you need about 3 days in there to read all the plagues and stories behind the exhibits. How the players influenced the game and how the game shaped the culture. The whole time there I kept thinking “Fergie Six” – the Little League baseball team I played on. We were the sixth team in Ferguson Township. And as I’d go through Hall and read about all the players I’d think of former teammates. I’d stop in front of a catcher’s display and I’d think Judy Johns – Judy was our catcher. A pitcher would recall the arm of Scott Pickering throwing fastballs by batters. Right Fielders would remind me they put the slower, less capable players in right field…wait, I played right field…well, back to the sermon. It was so much fun for this kid to look at all the greats and their stories on display. I saw the sweater worn by Gettysburg’s own Eddie Plank. I saw Ted Williams display that showed what he thought his batting average would be at the end of season if every pitcher he faced had thrown to the exact same spot all season long. And no trip would be complete without stopping in front of George Herman Ruth’s display – “The Bambino” Babe Ruth.

There is only a fraction of difference between the positioning for his sinker. The index and middle fingers are together, running along the top of where the seams make a horseshoe. Most of the Commissioner's signature is covered. The grip reveals this is not a traditional curveball. Kluber calls it a curveball. Without hesitation, Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway says it is a slider. Different pitch classification systems have filtered the results in both categories. Josh Tomlin, who has a locker next to Kluber, should know, right? "It's a slider, curve and cutter all in one," Tomlin said with a laugh. "I don't know, man. I just know it's nasty." Told of the ongoing confusion over Kluber's confounding pitch, the creator let out an amused laugh from his home in Skowhegan, Maine, a small town west of Bangor with a population of about 9,000. More than a decade ago, Garrett Quinn was the pitching coach for Stetson University, where a young Kluber arrived raw but full of potential. One of their first tasks was to fix the slow, loopy curveball that he used against high school players. Tonight, Kluber will take the mound against the Yankees in the decisive Game 5 of the American League Division Series presented by Doosan (8 p.m. ET on FS1).
