Below: In the valley above Trigrad (PC). As with all Honeyguide holidays, part of the price of the holiday was put towards local conservation work. The conservation contributions from this holiday raised £700, namely £40 per person topped up by Gift Aid through the Honeyguide Wildlife Charitable Trust. Honeyguide is committed to supporting the protection of Lilium rhodopaeum. The Rhodope lily is a scarce endemic flower of the Western Rhodopes, found on just a handful of sites in Bulgaria and just over the border in Greece, about half of which have no protection. Money raised in 2014 was enough to fund Honeyguide leader Vlado Trifonov, who is recognised as the leading authority on the Rhodope lily, for monitoring and mowing for two years at the location visited by Honeyguiders. That includes this year (2015). That work is likely to continue for some years, but other conservation needs in the future are uncertain.

    Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’.

SCHMÖLZER A b s t r a c t: For the first time the beetle collection of OStR Prof. Dr. Josef Weis, Traun near Linz, is evaluated, critically studied and updated concerning taxonomy, systematics and nomenclature. 903 species of 64 families are listed, two fifth of all species belong to Carabidae and Staphylinidae. Information about collecting dates and localities derive from Prof. Weis's collecting protocols. Vorwort Am 2. Mai 1999 ist in seinem Heim in Traun Herr OStR. Prof. Dr. Josef Weis nach langer Krankheit verstorben. Dr. Weis hat unmittelbar nach dem Ende des 2. Weltkriegs das Biologie-Studium mit dem Hauptfach Zoologie an der Universität Innsbruck begon- nen und mit der Lehrbefähigung für Allgemeinbildende Höhere Schulen, sowie dem Doktorat abgeschlossen. Seine Dissertation galt der Erforschung der Blattläuse Ober- österreichs; der 1. Teil dieser Arbeit ist in der Österr. Zool. Zeitschrift 1955 (Bd. V, Heft 4, p. 464-559) erschienen. Dr. Weis hat seine Unterrichtsverpflichtung sehr ernst genommen und war ein ausge- zeichneter Biologielehrer. So hat ihm die Unterrichtsvorbereitung kaum Zeit gelassen, sich weiter der besonders arbeitsaufwendigen Untersuchung der Aphiden zuzuwenden. Die Verbundenheit mit der Natur, der Flora und Fauna, ganz besonders der Arthropoden- fauna, war ihm aber stets eine Selbstverständlichkeit. So hat er sich sowohl im Unter- richt, als auch besonders bei Exkursionen, Schulausflügen und Schullandwochen der Tierwelt, besonders der Kleintierwelt Oberösterreichs angenommen. Seine besondere Zuwendung galt dabei den Käfern, sodaß aus dieser, sich über mehrere Jahrzehnte er- streckenden Sammeltätigkeit schließlich eine Käfersammlung erwuchs, die u.a.

DOFTEANA, JUD. BAC:U) MIHAELA ARINTON Rezumat Valea Dofteanei aparXine MunXilor Nemira, care sunt situaXi în partea sudic; a CarpaXilor Orientali, între MunXii Ciucului 2i MunXii Vrancei. Materialul analizat în aceast; lucrare a fost colectat în perioada 2001-2004, punctele de colectare fiind reprezentate de paji2ti 2i alte locaXii: Cheile Dofteanei, Pufu (1047 m), La Cire2 (1063 m). Cele 323 de scarabeide colectate în Valea Dofteanei aparXin la dou; familii, 6 subfamilii, 15 genuri 2i 20 de specii. Pentru fiecare specie au fost calculaXi indici ecologici precum: abundenXa, dominanXa, frecvenXa, constanXa, indicele de semnificaXie ecologic; (W). Conform rezultatelor obXinute, Cetonia aurata (LINNAEUS, 1761), Anoplotrupes stercorosus (SCRIBA, 1791) 2i Hoplia argentea (PODA, 1761) sunt speciile cel mai bine reprezentate (luate împreun; aceste trei specii reprezint; 60,4% din totalul materialului colectat). Din cele 20 de specii, identificate pentru Valea Dofteanei, 5 sunt caracteristice: Anoplotrupes stercorosus SCRIBA, Aphodius fimetarius (LINNAEUS, 1758), Cetonia aurata L., Gnorimus nobilis (LINNAEUS, 1758) 2i Trichius fasciatus (LINNAEUS, 1758). The species of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea from the Bulgarian part of the Western Rhodopes has been studied. The study is based on a critical review of the litera- ture, revision of the material kept in the Institute of Zoology of Sofia, and newly collected material. A total of, 153 species are cited. The species are divided in three groups. The first group includes 138 species belonging to the families Lucanidae (4), Trogidae (1), Bolbo- ceratidae (1), Geotrupidae (7), Ochodaeidae (2), Glaphyridae (1), Aphodiidae (47), Scara- baeidae (26), Melolonthidae (24), Rutelidae (10), Dynastidae (3) and Cetoniidae (12). These species are considered as reliable records for the region; 17 of them are first cited for the Western Rhodopes, Aphodius (Chilothorax) conspurcatus (Linnaeus, 1758) being a new species for the Bulgarian fauna. A second group comprises 12 species which have not been cited with exact records or which probably concern misidentifications; their occurrence in the region remains in question. The third group put aside Lethrus elephas, Blitopertha lineata and Mimela junii, cited in the past, but which actually do not live in Bulgaria.

Larval identification of those species is a difficult issue. Here, we provided DNA barcodes for these species of scarabids using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I (COI). The relationship between these three species of Iranian white grubs and related species was addressed. Among these species, P. adspersa is the predominant species in North-East of Iran, Khorasan provinces.The isolation of an unknown pathogen indicated the incidence of a natural infection by a species of entomopathogenic nematode from Heterorhabditis genus. Classic data as well as molecular characterization of this insect pathogen using ITS sequences confirmed the occurrence of H. bacteriophora in natural populations of P. adspersa. This is the first data about DNA barcodes of Iranian white grubs as well as new record for natural entomopathogen of P. adspersa larvae. NOTE 2. LILA Gima Abstract. This paper presents an overview of the literature for Romania (1904 - 2010), of the data on host species of beetles reported in Dolj county and its surroundings, to which we added the species collected and examined between 2009 and 2013 in Dolj county. In order to have a practical and useful data processing, we analysed the material from the point of view of the diversity of host beetles, where we presented the species of parasites and parasitoids. There were found 67 species of beetles belonging to three superfamilies (Scarabeoidea, Chrysomeloidea, Dytiscoidea). Each part has representatives that are host to several species of parasites and parasitoids. We also drew maps rendering fauna alerts within Dolj county and the collected and examined material at which we found parasites (Oryctes nasicornis, Pentodon idiota, Melolontha melolontha, Cerambix cerdo). The data extracted from the literature are rendered in systematic order, according to the taxonomy and nomenclature used in Fauna Europaea. Keywords: beetle-host, parasites, parasitoids. Rezumat. The conservation contributions from this holiday raised £540 and this has been split two ways, both to support the protection of Lilium rhodopaeum. The Rhodope lily is a scarce endemic flower of the Western Rhodopes, found on just a handful of sites in Bulgaria and just over the border in Greece, about half of which have no protection. £200 has been sent to the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, the BirdLife partner in Bulgaria, which also has a wider biodiversity remit. This sum will support BSPB in finalising the designation of Protected Area Tzigansko Gradishte, a Lilium rhodopaeum site, as part of the Natura 2000 network of internationally important wildlife sites, and will fund meetings with local stakeholders as BSPB continues to lobby to get Tzigansko Gradishte designated for nature conservation.
