  • Dixon's Championship Run Falls Short in Sonoma
Dixon’s Championship Run Falls Short in Sonoma Posted by TBNDavid On 09/18/2017 • Scott Dixon finishes fourth at GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, third in drivers’ championship • Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti complete 2017 season with exciting battle for sixth • Ed Jones named 2017 IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year • A valiant effort from Scott Dixon and his Chip Ganassi Racing team came up short Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, as the Honda driver finished fourth in the season-ending GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, and third in the final drivers' championship standings. Throughout the Verizon IndyCar Series season, Dixon demonstrated remarkable consistency, finishing sixth or better at 12 of the 17 rounds, including the 41st victory of his career at Road America in June. Only crashes – not of his making – at the Indianapolis 500 and at Texas Motor Speedway prevented the veteran from making an even stronger run toward his fifth series title. In all, Honda teams and drivers posted seven victories in 2017, including the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500, won by Takuma Sato. Sato became the first Japanese driver to win the Memorial Day weekend classic, and the fourth Honda driver to win Indianapolis in the last six years of multi-manufacturer competition. Although he failed to finish today's race due to a suspension issue, Ed Jones completed a strong inaugural season of Indy car competition, including an outstanding third-place finish at the Indianapolis 500, for the Honda-powered Dale Coyne Racing driver securing Rookie of the Year honors. Just behind the leaders, Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti put on an entertaining battle for sixth position, resolved only in the final laps in Rahal's favor.

CAN DIXON GO FROM THE POLE TO VICTORY LANE For the third time in his career, Scott Dixon scored the pole for Indianapolis 500, the fastest polesitter for the race since 1996. • Hitachi Continues Partnershipwith Team
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HITACHI CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP WITH TEAM PENSKE IN 2019 TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (March 4, 2019) – Team Penske and Hitachi Group today announced a continuation of their partnership for the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season. Team Penske will enter its 53rd year of racing competition in 2019, and Hitachi is proud to carry on its dynamic relationship with Team Penske for the eighth-consecutive season. Team Penske and Hitachi have shared success both on and off the track since becoming partners in 2012. After a productive five-year relationship with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, Hitachi was paired with 2017 IndyCar Series Champion Josef Newgarden beginning with the 2018 season. This year, the familiar Hitachi branding will adorn Newgarden’s No. 2 Dallara/Chevrolet for eight of the 17 IndyCar Series races. Newgarden tied for the series lead in wins (three) and poles (four) with Hitachi in 2018, elevating his career stats to include 10 wins, six poles and the series championship just two years ago. “I can’t wait for the 2019 season to start,” said Newgarden. “We learned a lot at the Circuit of the Americas test in February and we’ll apply that to the No. 2 Hitachi Chevrolet. I’m confident in the data we collected as a team and I’m sure we’ll start the year strong.” He added, “Hitachi is a great partner for the whole team. I’m excited they’re back with us this season and I’m ready to represent them on track at St. Pete and all season long.” Hitachi will also continue as an associate sponsor for Team Penske’s other IndyCar Series entries – the Dallara/Chevrolets driven by 2016 IndyCar Champion Simon Pagenaud, and 2014 Champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power.

NEWGARDEN GROWS HIS POINTS LEAD: With his third win in the last four races, Josef Newgarden has taken control of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship. The Team Penske driver holds a 31-point lead over Scott Dixon with only two races remaining. Can he keep his hot streak alive at Watkins Glen? Chris Owens/INDYCAR PHOTO WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: • MAYBE IT SHOULD BE ‘SCOTT-KINS’ GLEN: When it comes to Indy car races at Watkins Glen International, there’s no better driver than Scott Dixon. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver has four wins in seven previous visits to the historic road circuit and will look to put his championship destiny in his own hands with another strong performance on the 3.37-mile circuit. • WELCOME BACK, JACK: Rookie Jack Harvey returns to the Verizon IndyCar Series this weekend with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The English driver, who finished second in Indy Lights in 2014 and 2015, made his series debut with Andretti Autosport with Michael Shank Racing in May. He makes the first of two road course starts this weekend. • FANTASY FOCUS: Scott Dixon will be the popular pick this weekend among Fantasy owners, but here are a few more to team with the four-time champ.
