I am thankful that I was free to choose who to love and marry. I am thankful to be free to choose to practice any religion or none at all. I am thankful for the diversity of American state laws and the freedom to choose to live in a state with laws that conform to my val- ues. I am thankful that I do not live in a socialist county, where the government is in complete control of its people. I am thankful that I do not have to wait in line for food like I did when I was a little girl in the USSR. I am thankful that my food choices are not limited by my government (albeit, I do not live in California). I am thankful that my parents were wise enough to know that we are not Russian-Americans. I am grateful to my parents for always reminding me that we came to America to be Americans. I am thankful for the opportunity to pursue the American Dream. I am a thankful American. Sect Sherry Gillis [email protected] 530-891-1495 A Report from the 2019 Biennial Convention for CFRW in Bakersfield By Sherry Gillis, Network & Communications Chair California Federation of Republican Women had their Biennial Convention at the Marriot Hotel in Bakersfield October 18, 19 and 20th and I attended, along with about 400 members from RWF clubs all over the state of California. There was a western themed event on Friday night I decided not to attend, because I’m usually pretty tired by Friday night and opted to go to dinner with my hubby, who agreed to drive me down there. Saturday morning I was at the convention ready to find out all about how the proceedings. I had been made a delegate by CRWF President Kris Anderson, so I could vote on the various issues at hand and the officers running on the ballot that weekend. First of all, what a GREAT group of women! Wow! There were Republican women there from every walk of life—and they all got along really well. Lots of red outfits, rhinestone Trump jewelry, MAGA hats, and every other type of Republican garb you could imagine were sported at this event. We were each given a packet with a voting card to stick in the air when we were voting yes. There was a big dais of officers—all of the officers from the last two years who are leaving office at the end of December were present—and they led the proceedings. We went through the by-laws, which were delineated on the pamphlet in the package we were given and we could follow along as suggestions were made to change snippets, add in or take out portions. It all went along fairly smoothly until they came to the section in which they talked about raising the dues. They were going to raise the dues for NFRW and CFRW, which have remained the same since 2011. Women from both sides of the argument lined up at microphones placed on either side of the room and argued for and against. In the end an elderly lady from the Hispanic Republican Women Federated down in Southern California had a representative get up for her group and read her plea not to raise the dues. That seemed to seal the deal and the majority of the 400 delegates present voted not to raise the dues for the state organization. We are required to raise the dues for the national organization, but we kept the dues down for the state. Like everything, this is good for some and not good for others. Yes, it is good that we are keeping our costs down for members. The other side of this issue is that the state organization is left with no ability to increase their budget in a year when they are making changes to the way the entire California Federation of Republican Women is run. Starting in January, 2020 CFRW will be divided into 9 regions, rather than 3 divisions. Elections for 9 regional directors took place and I was present to vote in our caucus for our new region. Chico is located in Region 5 and our new Regional Director is Mary Ervin from Gold Nugget RWF in Sierra County, California. Mary’s email is [email protected] if you need to reach her with questions about the changeover from divisions to regions. That evening was the “Crystal Palace” banquet featuring Ken Starr and you can read about that speech on Page 10 of this newsletter. There were farewells given to the outgoing President of CFRW, Nam Yong Horn, and then Sunday morning there was an election and our incoming President, Sue Blair, was installed. It was great fun and I highly recommend getting involved, both with the local RWF and our state RWF. The Technology Report October was another active month for our website and Facebook page. In October we had 4900 visitors to our website and 80,000 people were reached by the posts on our Facebook page.
