Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. CHAPTER 1 THE CALIFORNIA FLORA The Californian Floristic Province California is a large state with a complex topography and a great diversity of climates and habitats,resulting in a very large assemblage of plant species that vary in size and include both the world’s largest trees and some of the smallest and most unique plant species. In order to create manageable units for plant investigations, botanists have divided the continental landform into geographic units called floristic provinces. These units reflect the wide variations in natural landscapes and assist botanists in predicting where a given plant might be found. Within the borders of California, there are three floristic provinces, each extending beyond the state’s political boundaries. The California Floristic Province includes the geographi- cal area that contains assemblages of plant species that are more or less characteristic of California and that are best de- veloped in the state.This province includes southwestern Ore- gon and northern Baja California but excludes certain areas of the southeastern California desert regions, as well as the area of the state that is east of the Sierra Nevada–Cascade Range axis (map 1).The flora of the desert areas and those east of the Sierra Nevada crest are best developed outside the state, and therefore, parts of the state of California are not in the Cali- fornia Floristic Province. The Great Basin Floristic Province includes some of the area east of the Sierra Nevada and some regions in the northeastern part of the state, although some botanists consider the latter area to belong to another distinct floristic province, the Columbia Plateau Floristic Province. -

Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2. -

It contains a grouping of soil units that respond similarly to ecological processes. The ESD contains 1) enough information to distinguish it from similar and associated ecological sites and 2) a draft state and transition model capturing the ecological processes and vegetative states and community phases as they are currently conceptualized. The provisional ESD has undergone both quality control and quality assurance protocols. It is expected that the provisional ESD will continue refinement towards an approved status. Site name: Mountain Pinyon Pinus edulis (twoneedle pinyon) Site type: Rangeland Site ID: R036XY114CO Major land resource area (MLRA): 036-Southwestern Plateaus, Mesas, and Foothills Location Map Mountain Pinyon ecological site is found on dipslopes, mountain slopes and structural benches in MLRA 36 (Southwestern Plateaus Mesas and Foothills). The MLRA 36 is illustrated orange color on the map. The ecological site locations as assigned in soil survey map units are shown in pink color. The site concept was established within the MLRA 36 Foothill/Upland regions. This zone is 12 to 16 inches of precipitation and has a mesic temperature regime. This site has bimodal precipitation that is dominated by Pinyon and Utah Juniper with shrubs and grasses in the understory. DRAFT ECOLOGICAL EVALUATION for the CERISE GULCH POTENTIAL RESEARCH NATURAL AREA WHITE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST PITKIN AND EAGLE COUNTIES, COLORADO Prepared by Margarette J. Lyon Colorado Natural Heritage Program October, 1995 INTRODUCTION The Cerise Gulch potential Research Natural Area is located approximately sixteen miles southeast of Carbondale, Colorado. It includes about 2,390 acres (967 ha.), consisting of steep mountain slopes of Douglas fir and aspen forest, pinyon-juniper woodlands, and shrublands with Gambel oak, snowberry, serviceberry, and sagebrush. LAND MANAGEMENT PLANNING This document has been prepared by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program through a Challenge Cost- Share Agreement with the White River National Forest to produce Ecological Evaluations of potential Research Natural Areas. These evaluations are intended to aid the National Forest in environmental analysis during revision of their Forest Management Plan. The specific areas and boundaries for evaluation were chosen by the White River National Forest. OBJECTIVES One of the primary objectives of RNAs as listed in the Forest Service Manual (4063.02, USDA Forest Service 1990) is to “preserve a wide spectrum of pristine representative areas that typify important forest, shrubland, grassland, alpine, aquatic, geologic and similar natural situations...” The Cerise Gulch potential RNA would meet this objective by representing a number of plant associations within the Douglas fir, pinyon-juniper and mountain shrub alliances. The area is of particular interest as an example of mountain shrub communities in the Quercus gambelii series. A Cerise Gulch RNA would meet further objectives of the RNA system by (1) protecting elements of biodiversity, (2) serving as a reference area for the study of succession and long-term ecological changes, (3) providing a site for non-manipulative scientific research, and (4) serving as a control area for comparing results of manipulative research and resource management in other areas with similar ecosystem types. -

Cannings Royal British Columbia Museum November 2016 Introduction This treatment of the ecozones of British Columbia is slightly modified from the one I wrote in The Checklist of the Lepidoptera of British Columbia, Canada (Pohl et al. 2015). Ecozone and Biogeoclimatic Zone information is integrated. Authors of annotated checklists of various taxa in the province might find it a useful framework in which to discuss the biodiversity and distribution of species in the groups in question. The most useful summaries of British Columbia’s environment are found in Meidinger and Pojar (1991), BC Ministry of Forests and Range (2013), Demarchi (1996), and Cannings and Cannings (1996). The following details are mostly taken from these publications. Large and diverse, British Columbia (BC) is exceptionally variable physically and biologically. Covering almost 950,000 sq km, the province spans 11 degrees of latitude and 25 degrees of longitude. It is about 1300 km from the southern coast of Vancouver Island to the northern boundary at 60˚ N and, along this latitude, the boundary with the Yukon and the Northwest Territories stretches almost 1100 km. Mountains and the sea-bound coast, studded with islands, epitomize BC, and the region is mostly cool, moist, forested and mountainous. But such generalities do not do justice to the striking diversity of wet and dry forests, grasslands, wetlands, scrub and alpine tundra forming complex mosaics of habitat across vast plateaus, valleys and plains lying among several northwest-southeast trending mountain ranges. Climates range from semi-arid and Mediterranean to subarctic and alpine. -

Naturforsch. 62c, 155Ð163 (2007); received October 26/November 24, 2006 Members of several genera of Asteraceae, belonging to the tribes Mutisieae, Cardueae, Lactuceae (all subfamily Cichorioideae), and of Astereae, Senecioneae, Helenieae and Helian- theae (all subfamily Asteroideae) have been analyzed for chemodiversity of their exudate flavonoid profiles. The majority of structures found were flavones and flavonols, sometimes with 6- and/or 8-substitution, and with a varying degree of oxidation and methylation. Flava- nones were observed in exudates of some genera, and, in some cases, also flavonol- and flavone glycosides were detected. This was mostly the case when exudates were poor both in yield and chemical complexity. Structurally diverse profiles are found particularly within Astereae and Heliantheae. The tribes in the subfamily Cichorioideae exhibited less complex flavonoid profiles. Current results are compared to literature data, and botanical information is included on the studied taxa.
