Date Published: 01 Nov 2000 This year's Clean and Green Week Campaign (CGW 2000) focuses on community participation. Community participation is an important factor in sustaining Singapore's clean and green environment. 2 Coming on board are several Town Councils, and many co-organisers from the private sector, the NGOs and grassroots organisations. In line with the theme, this year's campaign hopes to emphasise the "we" in our campaign message "Clean & Green. That's The Way We Like It." Held from 5 to 11 Nov, CGW 2000 offers a wide variety of community initiatives and more innovative and fun avenues for environmental protection efforts for all sectors of our community. 3 This year, the launch of CGW will be returning back to the HDB heartlands. Deputy Prime Minister BG Lee Hsien Loong will launch CGW 2000 at Jurong Point Amphitheatre, Jurong West Central 1. The launch celebrates the environmental protection efforts by members of our local community with awards for the Island-wide Cleanest Estates Competition and winners of the Green Leaf Award. The prize presentation ceremony will be followed by the planting of Carallia brachiata 'Honiara' saplings by Deputy Prime Minister BG Lee Hsieng Loong, Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan, Acting Minister for the Environment Mr Lim Swee Say and several other guests - a traditional symbol of our commitment to keeping Singapore green. Besides the launch event, other fringe activities will also be organised at Bukit Timah Group Representative Constituency (GRC). 4 The Pasir Ris Town Council will also be organising activities like a fun tele-match, a brisk-walking activity and children's activities for its residents, for the opening of Brontosaur Park during CGW 2000. Marine Parade Town Council will also be organising its very own Clean & Green Week Carnival, which includes a "Recycle & Recreate" competition, several musical performances, an exhibition and a children's spot-art competition to involve the very young. 5 Besides these initiatives by town councils, over 400 organisations involving more than 100,000 Singaporeans will be organising in-house environmental activities, echoing the theme of "Community Participation". Further to these initiatives, other activities will be organised for various sectors of our community to bring environmental protection closer to the population. Bringing the green message home 6 Targetting our student population, is 'Green 21 - Innovations for Our Environment', a 4- day schools' event co-organised by ENV, Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council. Held from 7 to 10 Nov at the Singapore Expo, this 4-day exhibition will feature practical student innovations created from waste materials and several fun games that will help send home important environmental messages on waste minimisation and pollution. About 8,000 students from over 120 schools will be participating in the 4-day event. 7 To create awareness among primary and secondary school children on waste management and the extent of the littering situation in Singapore, Singapore Environment Council (SEC) will be organising 'Cash for Trash', an island-wide clean-up of parks and nature reserves from 5 to 11 Nov. For every bag of rubbish collected, sponsors will be sought to pledge funds, which will be re-allocated to the schools to start their individual environmental projects. About 10,000 students from over 60 schools will be taking part in this activity. 8 Not forgetting teachers, who hold the key to spreading the environmental message among students, a two-day environmental educational workshop will be organised for close to 200 teachers from 8 to 9 Nov. Organised by ENV, this workshop is part of our commitment to ensure educators are well equipped to conduct effective environmental education in the schools. Teachers will get to visit the mangroves and offshore landfill of Pulau Semakau. 9 To reach out to our youth community, a 'green' scavenger hunt, 'EcoRush', will be organised on 11 Nov at Fort Canning Park. The activity aims to bring home the message that clean air, land and water are vital for a healthy population in a fun and challenging manner. In partnership with ENV is SEC, with sponsorship from Motorola, Hewlett- Packard, Tangs and Aqua. 10 In addition to the traditional Clean & Green Week activities of guided walks around constituencies, nature reserves, nature parks and park adoption activities by National Parks Board (NParks), the organisation will also be officially opening Choa Chu Kang Park on 11 Nov. Other avenues for public participation during CGW 2000 include the 'Guess Who?' MRT Poster Call-in Contest, 'The Green Quiz' at Shell service stations, Name-a-Painting Contest, and activities such as games and opinion polls on the Internet.
