Singapore’s GDP growth turned negative at -0.7% yoy in Q1 2020 as the economy buckled under the impact of the pandemic. Office-using Forecast employment grew by only 2,700 workers during the first quarter, a significant decrease from the 5,800 workers added in the preceding quarter. The $10.37 government is expecting the country to enter its deepest recession ever, with full-year GDP growth in the range of -7.0 to -4.0%. URBAN TROPICAL ECOLOGY IN SINGAPORE BIOLOGY / ENVIRON 571A Course Description (from Duke University Bulletin) Experiential field oriented course in Singapore and Malaysia focusing on human ecology, tropical diversity, disturbed habitats, Asian extinctions, and resource management. Students spend approximately three weeks in Singapore/Malaysia during the spring semester. Additional course fees apply. Faculty: Dr. Dan Rittschof, Dr. Tom Schultz General Description Singapore is a fascinating combination of biophysical, human and institutional ecology, tropical diversity, disturbed habitats, invasive species and built environments. Within the boundaries of the city state/island of Singapore one can go from patches of primary rain forest to housing estates for 4.8 million plus residents, industrial complexes, and a port that processes between 800 and 1000 ships a day. Singapore's land area grew from 581.5 km2 (224.5 sq mi) in the 1960s to 704 km2 (271.8 sq mi) today, and may grow by another 100 km² (38.6 sq mi) by 2030. Singapore includes thousands of introduced species, including a multicultural assemblage of human inhabitants. Singapore should be in the Guinness Book of World Records for its increase in relative country size due to reclamation, and for the degree of governmental planning and control for the lives of its citizens. It is within this biological and social context that this experiential field oriented seminar will be conducted. Students will experience how this city state functions, and how it has worked to maintain and enhance the quality of life of its citizens while intentionally and unintentionally radically modifying its environment, in the midst of the extremely complicated geopolitical situation of Southeast Asia. -

Singapore Raptor Report Autumn Migration, November 2010 Summary: A total of 450 migrant raptors representing 10 species were recorded this month. Leading the pack are the Black Bazas with 291 birds. This included, at Tuas, an impressive kettle of 180 birds! As usual, Oriental Honey Buzzards came in second in terms of numbers with a total of 105. The third most recorded migrant raptor was the Japanese Sparrowhawk with 28 birds. November 2010 was an exceptional month for the rare Jerdon’s Baza. A total of 4 of these were recorded. The first two were seen together on the casuarinas trees in Changi on the 20th, an adult and a ‘pale-faced’ juvenile. This sets the early date for this species back by 10 days. One week later, on the 27th, another ‘dark-faced’ juvenile was seen near the same spot. On the 30th, an adult was seen at Bidadari. All these four individuals were also photographed. Little is known about the movements of this species which is distributed disjointedly across India and Southeast Asia. Jerdon’s Baza, juvenile, in flight, at Changi on 27 Nov 10, by Tan Kok Hui Bidadari also presented another goodie this season – a Booted Eagle! It was seen and photographed on the 10th. This was preceded by a record on the 5th at Seletar West, the usual haunt for this species. Eastern Marsh Harriers were recorded from the usual haunts at Changi Cove / Tanah Merah and Pulau Semakau. Similarly, Common Buzzards were recorded from their usual haunts at Changi. Other migrant raptors recorded this month included Chinese Sparrowhawk, Osprey and Peregrine Falcon. -
