Urones (*) RESUMEN En este artículo se da el listado de las 38 especies de Philodromidae (Araneae) cono- cidas en la Península Ibérica y Baleares. La lista ordenada alfabéticamente, se presenta indicando las localidades por provincias y referencias bibliográficas donde se ha citado cada especie. Se incluye el material existente en la colección del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid, así como ejemplares de Philodromidae de otras proce- dencias. Se da el atlas provisional de distribución de las especies de Philodromidae para España peninsular e islas Baleares, y para Portugal y Andorra. La distribución de cada especie se indica sobre mapas de cuadrícula U.T.M. de 50 km de lado. Y se aportan ade- más datos sobre su hábitat y ciclos de vida. Palabras clave: Arañas, Araneae, Philodromidae, Distribución Geográfica, España, Portugal ABSTRACT Catalogue and atlas of the Spider Family Philodromidae Thorell, 1870 of Iberian Peninsule and Balearic Islands A check-list of 38 species of Philodromidae found in Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands is given. The list, in alphabetic order, contains the provinces and bibliographic references where the species are cited. The material of Philodromidae from the “Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Madrid” has been studied, also several exemplars are examined. The provisional atlas of distribution of the species the Philodromidae in Spain, Portugal and Andorra is given, together with a distribution map for each species. We also give some data concerning its habitat and life cycle. -

This is the first detailed contribution on the arachnid fauna from heated greenhouses in the Botanical Garden of the P.J. Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia). Over ten years 62 spider taxa in 21 families were found. Two spiders, Mermessus trilobatus (Emerton, 1882) and Hasarius adansoni (Audouin, 1826), were recorded in Slovakia for the first time. Another interesting record was the cellar spider Hoplopholcus sp. and a new locality for the exotic spiders Coleosoma floridanum Banks, 1900 and Triaeris stenaspis Simon, 1891 was discovered. Additionally, a short survey of other arachnids (except Acari) was done. A single specimen of a provisionally identifiable palpigrade species (cf. Eukoenenia florenciae), one harvestmen species, Opilio canestrinii (Thorell, 1876), and four pseudoscorpion species were recorded. The rare pseudoscorpion species Chthonius ressli Beier, 1956 was collected for the second time in Slovakia. Hiermit wird der erste umfangreiche Beitrag zur Spinnentierfauna des Botanischen Gartens der P.J. Šafárik Universität in Košice (Slowakei) präsentiert. Während zehn Jahren wurden 62 Spinnentaxa aus 21 Familien nachgewiesen. Zwei Spinnenarten, Mermessus trilobatus (Emerton, 1882) und Hasarius adansoni (Audouin, 1826), werden erst- mals für die Slowakei gemeldet. -

Because it is positioned on the ecotone between tundra and boreal forest, the Churchill area is a strategic locality for the analysis of shifts in faunal composition. This fact has motivated the effort to develop a comprehensive biodiversity inventory for the Churchill region by coupling DNA barcoding with morphological studies. The present study represents one element of this effort; it focuses on analysis of the spider fauna at Churchill. Results: 198 species were detected among 2704 spiders analyzed, tripling the count for the Churchill region. Estimates of overall diversity suggest that another 10–20 species await detection. Most species displayed little intraspecific sequence variation (maximum <1%) in the barcode region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, but four species showed considerably higher values (maximum = 4.1-6.2%), suggesting cryptic species. All recognized species possessed a distinct haplotype array at COI with nearest-neighbour interspecific distances averaging 8.57%. Three species new to Canada were detected: Robertus lyrifer (Theridiidae), Baryphyma trifrons (Linyphiidae), and Satilatlas monticola (Linyphiidae). The first two species may represent human-mediated introductions linked to the port in Churchill, but the other species represents a range extension from the USA. -

[email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT Generalist predators are widely acknowledged to contribute valuable levels of biological con- trol in agroecosystems throughout the world. Although their feeding habits can result in the rejection of target pests in favor of preferred and often more nutritious non-pest prey, these natural enemies are capable of colonizing habitats prior to the arrival of pests by subsisting on alternative sources of food. The effect of consuming non-pest species on rates of pest preda- tion by a generalist predator can be twofold; feeding upon these nutritious food items gener- ally enhances fecundity thus improving their population growth, but the presence of alterna- 453 tive prey, especially during times when pest regulation is required, can result in reduced levels of pest consumption per individual predator. However, an increased density of natural en- emies can counteract this reduction in pest consumption and exert significant levels of bio- logical control. The role of alternative prey in sustaining predator populations has been widely reported in laboratory studies and field trials examining the fecundity, feeding behavior and growth rates of species subjected to diets of varying quality. Recently, the application of monoclonal antibody and molecular technology to study predation rates in the field has revealed the ex- tent to which many predator communities rely on alternative prey before, during and after the immigration of pests into crops. -

The knowledge of dispersal evolution, motivation, its effect on metapopulation dynamics and species distribution at multiple scales is poorly understood and many questions remain unsolved or require empirical verification. In this thesis we contribute to the knowledge of dispersal, by studying both ecological and evolutionary aspects of spider dispersal in fragmented grey dunes. Studies were performed at the individual, population and assemblage level and indicate that behavioural traits narrowly linked to dispersal, con- siderably show [adaptive] variation in function of habitat quality and geometry. Dispersal also determines spider distribution patterns and metapopulation dynamics. It is the southernmost edge of the Strážovské vrchy Mountains (Mts) (48°55ʹ46ʹʹN; 18°26ʹ05ʹʹE), separated from the central massif by the river ow Nitrica. is area is considerably inuenced by human activity: In the past, it had massive deforestation and agricultural use (mainly as pasture), recently, it is dominated by mining activities (several quarries). e whole area is out of the territo- rial protection, with the exception of the little Nature reserve Veľký vrch, surrounded by two quarries, and the le one is more or less abandoned. In the past, this area was used mainly for grazing, but this is currently very limited. Our research site is an aban- doned pasture; therefore, ecological succession is carried out intensively here. Forgot- ten aer-utility areas (abandoned quarries, pastures, industrial sites) are usually con- sidered to be ‘sterile’ and unattractive for zoological research, but this may not always correspond to reality. Even in our research site, we have carried out several rare and surprising ndings. We would like to present the results of our research in this paper. It is sad, but a large amount of abandoned pastures is scattered throughout Slova- kia. -

Mitt. 36: 9-20 Nürnberg, Dezember 2008 Spiders (Araneae) from the Panský diel (Starohorské vrchy Mts, Slovakia) Valerián Franc & Stanislav Korenko Abstract: Spiders were collected at the massif 'Panský diel' near the city of Banská Bystrica (Central Slovakia). We recorded 252 spider species for the territory and one new species for Slovakia. Although the summit reaches an altitude of 1.100 m a.s.l., more or less thermophilous species apparently prevail here, especially at lower moderate sites. On the other hand, only several typical oreophilous species were documented. Many recorded species are scarce or even very rare. This indicates the very high value of this territory from both a genetic and an environmental perspective.
