INTRODUCTION

The Australian College of Theology (ACT) has collated all data regarding 2017 research output, candidates and graduates. The ACT, in common with non self-accrediting higher education providers, is not required to submit data on our research to the Australian Research Council (ARC).1 Nevertheless, in past years we have sought to account for ACT publications as though we were required to report them. Previously this has been reported in line with HERDC specifications, the previous reporting mechanism. From 2016, HERDC is no longer requiring publication data to be reported. This information instead is to be reported to Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), Australia’s national research evaluation framework. We are now reporting using the ERA 2015 categories and specifications, which was the last round of this process. However, in order for our final score to be comparable to previous years, we have retained the 5-point weighting for books from the HERDC process. ERA uses the 5-point weighting in determining volume but not for final numbers.

Only five types of research output were counted in the ERA 2015 process. These were:

• books authored and published by commercial publishers  • chapters in books published by commercial publishers  • journal articles in peer-reviewed journals  • conference papers published in the conference proceedings  • non-traditional research outputs  Edited books, book reviews, and articles in journals which are not peer-reviewed are not counted. Research output must comply with the definition of research as outlined by ERA:

the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies, inventions and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it is new and creative.

Researchers must be ACT affiliated, and where their primary academic role is elsewhere, the work must acknowledge the affiliation. Where there are multiple authors, the percentage of ACT affiliation is calculated. Output which does not meet the criteria has been included below to demonstrate broader impact but have not been included in the overall score.

The ACT research points for the 2017 calendar year:

21.75 (x 5)  61  51.825  01  = 222.6

Rev Dr Martin Sutherland

Dean & CEO, Australian College of Theology
