Whitney to Present Collected by Thea Westreich Wagner and Ethan Wagner NEW YORK, October 08, 2015 – Celebrating an extraordinary and transformative gift of more than 850 works collectively given to the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou by Thea Westreich Wagner and Ethan Wagner, both institutions will present consecutive exhibitions featuring a selection of works from the gift. The Whitney’s presentation of Collected by Thea Westreich Wagner and Ethan Wagner opens on November 20 in the Museum’s new downtown home and runs through March 6, 2016. The Pompidou’s exhibition follows the New York presentation, opening in Paris on June 9, 2016. The exhibition is organized by Elisabeth Sussman, curator and Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Christine Macel, chief curator and head of the department of contemporary and prospective creation, Centre Pompidou, with Elisabeth Sherman, assistant curator, Whitney Museum of American Art. An illustrated catalogue documenting the collection will accompany the exhibitions. Adam D. Photograph by Bill Orcutt NEW YORK, March 15, 2012 – The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Centre Pompidou Foundation have received an unprecedented promised gift of works of art from the noted art collectors Thea Westreich Wagner and Ethan Wagner, announced Adam D. Weinberg, the Alice Pratt Brown Director of the Whitney, and Alain Seban, the Chairman and CEO of the Centre Pompidou, which expects to receive a loan of works being given to the Centre Pompidou Foundation. This magnanimous promised gift consists of more than 800 works of art by leading figures in American and international art spanning the last several decades. Nearly 500 works by about seventy American artists (about forty of whom are represented by multiple works) will enter the Whitney’s collection, while some 300 works by twenty-seven European and international artists will be exhibited by the Centre Pompidou. The Whitney and the Centre Pompidou will each present both the American and international works in major upcoming exhibitions.     liz deschenes Liz Deschenes (*1966) was born in Boston and lives and works in New York. She attended the Rhode Island School of Art and Design, where she initially enrolled in painting, but eventually switched to photography and graduated in 1988. In her artistic work, Deschenes confronts the assumptions surrounding photography as fixed image and extends this traditional view by experimenting with the medium’s properties and possibilities. Her unique photograms are camera-less, long-term exposures on light-sensitive paper. Deschenes also creates sculptural and archi- tectural objects that incorporate both their surroundings and the viewer through reflections. In 2019, parallel to the 58th Venice Biennale, Deschenes’s works were part of the exhibition ‘Luogo e segni’ at the Pinault Collection – Punta della Dogana. Major solo exhibitions have been presented at the ICA, Boston (2016); MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts (2015); the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2015); and Secession, Vienna (2012). We have donated somewhat more than 850 works of art, 350 of which are going to the Pompidou and 550 are going to the Whitney Museum. Each body of work goes to the institution that was most in need of what our collection had to offer their current collection. This was an important aspect of the decision-making in terms of what we gave and to whom. This gift to the Whitney was made in 2012 and I regret to inform you that we have not stopped collecting! So there will probably be another gift coming unless Ethan can control us, which I doubt very much! We continue to be inspired by the art of our time so there is little or no hope that we will ever stop collecting. What you will be seeing in this slide presentation are images of the exhibition that the Whitney did this year and which closed in March.
