Grandy, who has served in the House since 1986, began his professional career as an actor, best known for playing Gopher Smith on the Love Boat. CAMPUS IMlTCH OK, How About the Square Root? Andy Warhol once said everyone will get at least I 5 minutes of fame. It is true for computer engineering senior Michael Graff, and he is enjoying it. The Iowa State student has had articles written about him and colleagues Derek Atkins and Paul Leyland in several newspapers, including The New York Times . What is the reason for all the attention? Graff and his friends are weeks away from finding the secrets of RSA-129. RSA-129 is a 129-digit number used in cryptography to encode material on a computer. Cryptography, which Graff describes as "the art of hiding things in plain sight" uses the RSA system because it is the product of two very large prime numbers. These numbers comprise the "private key," and the two multiplied together create the "public key," which is used to encrypt, or hide, the message. Graff and his friends are trying to factor RSA-129; that is, they are trying to figure out what those two prime numbers are. What makes RSA-129 so special is that it will be the largest number ever factored. When it was released in 1977, its creators said it would take 40 quadrillion years to solve. With the technology available now, that claim is well off the mark. Still, Graff had his doubters. "A lot of people told us, 'you'll never make it,' " he said. At first, the project began as a lark. "Someone told me how hard it is to factor numbers, and I didn't see the difficulty. So, I started looking at techniques, and one of the techniques pointed me to Paul Leyland," he said. Leyland recommended RSA-129, since it was a popular number. "It was a little larger than we expected. It added about four months onto the project," he said. The entire project has taken nine months, and the team received help from more than I ,600 volunteers from every continent except Antarctica. Graff's main job was setting up the mathematical program for the volunteers and answering their questions. Graff likened it to the "Wheel of Fortune": IIRSA-12911 "The word is up there, and at first you start with no information. You flip tiles over until you eventually find the right numbers, and that's what everybody was doing. Everyone in the world (the volunteers) 11438162575788 was flipping over some of those tiles." 88676692357799 When they received the necessary information, they condensed it and sent it to Arjen Leenstra, who works for Bell Communications Research. In a few weeks, Leenstra is expected to make the final 76146612010218 calculations. 29672124236256 This finding will not endanger the world of cryptography, as larger numbers can be used, but it is 25618429357069 significant. "It proves that you're vulnerable, but it still takes an enormous amount of CPU power to 35245733897830 get anything done," Graff said. Graff, who has been interested in computers since the third grade, isn 't sure what he plans to do 59712356395870 once he graduates. He may become a systems programmer, or he may even get into cryptography. For 50589890751475 the moment, though, Graff is just enjoying the success of his biggest project. "It's interesting. I'm 99290026879543 eating this up as much as I can, in the hope that if we do get the numbers, I'll have a lot of background 541 to draw on. This has to look good on a resume,'' he said. ~ ...::~ Mark Berry ~Voting Information Ames Polling Places AmesWIPI State Forest Nursery, South Duff Avenue Primary Election - June 7, 1994 AmesWIP2 DOT District I office, S. Action No. 97-0160, ordering NRWC to respond to Interrogatory No. 3 and Document Request No. 3, as modified by the Court. INTRODUCTORY COAKMENTS Intemgatory No. 3 and Document Request No. 3 relate to activities from more than four years ago. NRTWC has experienced changes in personnel over those years, and documents may no longer exist, if they ever existed. Nonetheless, “WC, with the assistance of counsel and staff, has conducted a diligent search for documents and facts, and responds on the basis of information so gathered. The Court limited the scope of Interrogatory No. 3 and Document Request No. 3 to the 1992 senatorial candidates, and the Commission, by its attorneys in discussions with “WC counsel, has further limited the scope to the 1992 general election senatorial candidates. Thus, NRTWC’s search has focused on the 1992 general election senatorial candidates. Also, the Commission and NRTWC, in briefing and in discussions between counsel, have agreed that NRTWC may redact documents to delete supporter-identitjing information from documents to be produced, and NRTWC is doing so. MTERROGATORY NO. 3 NRlwC did not engage in, or finance, in whole or in pa, “any activities relating to federal elections in October-December 1992 .

  • Iowa -- Political Scenario
This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu IOWA -- POLITICAL SCENARIO U.S. Senate Race POLLING: A poll commissioned by three Iowa television stations (KCCI-Des Moines, KGAN-Cedar Rapids, and KTIV-Sioux City) and conducted by Political-Media Research, Inc., shows Harkin leading Tauke by a mere 9-point margin (46% to 37%). Seventeen percent of Iowans surveyed were uncommitted. Tauke's people contend that Harkin's dropping below 50% shows his vulnerability, while a Harkin spokesman maintained the sitting Senator's 17-point lead among Independents. SURROGATES: Tauke's campaign received an early boost from Clayton Yeutter in 1989. Also throughout the year, President Bush, Vice President Quayle, Secretary Sullivan, and Secretary Dole appeared. The Tauke campaign also has future commitments from Secretary Cavasos (June), Secretary Mosbacher (July), Secretary Brady (August), and Secretary Kemp. Iowa Native Son Cooper Evans will also appear. CAMPAIGN THEMES: Tauke is stressing his abilities as a coalition-builder in Congress -- as opposed to Harkin, who you'll recall gave a very strong statement in 1985 regarding your stand on portions of the Farm Bill. The character issue has worked well for Tauke -- and they're painting Harkin as accountable to influence peddlers. (90 % of his fundraising money is from out-of-state donors). \ ISSUES TO STRESS: Tom Tauke is a friend to agriculture. The Harkin record is bad news for farmers, since he's beholden to special interests on both the East and West Coasts. (See specifics in Tauke campaign brief). Also, Tauke has asked that you stress that if Harkin is defeated, Iowa won't lose a seat on the Senate Agriculture Committee -- since Harkin is fighting for agriculture interests outside of Iowa.
