Professor Binne Zwanenburg a Tribute
Issue in Honor of Prof. Binne Zwanenburg ARKIVOC 2004 (ii) 1-3 Professor Binne Zwanenburg A Tribute I cannot think of an instance, at least one of which I was aware, in the unique world of Dutch chemistry (every country has its own idiosyncrasies) when an important decision was in the air that someone did not ask "what does Binne think about this?". And I cannot remember an instance in which the position of Binne, if not yet known, was not soon made so. Binne Zwanenburg has given greatly to chemistry in general by outstanding scientific contributions and to Dutch chemistry in particular in the form of enormous and creative personal insight. Binne Zwanenburg was born in 1934 in Lippenhuizen in the province of Friesland. He grew up as a native speaker of Frisian and still has an admirable facility with this dialect (Frisians are of the opinion, not without reason, that this is a true language both spoken and written). He received his Ph.D degree in 1962 at the University of Groningen under the supervision of Wiendelt Drenth, who was later to become professor in Utrecht. He had postdoctoral positions with Ralph Raphael at Glasgow in 1963 and with Nelson Leonard at the University of Illinois in 1964/1965. He was appointed associate professor at the University of Groningen in 1965. During the period in Groningen, Binne Zwanenburg began work on organosulfur compounds in particular sulfines as well as on functionalized small-ring heterocycles. In addition to this chemistry, which quickly drew international attention, Binne became deeply involved with the plans for a new chemistry building in Groningen. -

The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath. -
Local Government in London Had Always Been More Overtly Partisan Than in Other Parts of the Country but Now Things Became Much Worse
Part 2 The evolution of London Local Government For more than two centuries the practicalities of making effective governance arrangements for London have challenged Government and Parliament because of both the scale of the metropolis and the distinctive character, history and interests of the communities that make up the capital city. From its origins in the middle ages, the City of London enjoyed effective local government arrangements based on the Lord Mayor and Corporation of London and the famous livery companies and guilds of London’s merchants. The essential problem was that these capable governance arrangements were limited to the boundaries of the City of London – the historic square mile. Outside the City, local government was based on the Justices of the Peace and local vestries, analogous to parish or church boundaries. While some of these vestries in what had become central London carried out extensive local authority functions, the framework was not capable of governing a large city facing huge transport, housing and social challenges. The City accounted for less than a sixth of the total population of London in 1801 and less than a twentieth in 1851. The Corporation of London was adamant that it neither wanted to widen its boundaries to include the growing communities created by London’s expansion nor allow itself to be subsumed into a London-wide local authority created by an Act of Parliament. This, in many respects, is the heart of London’s governance challenge. The metropolis is too big to be managed by one authority, and local communities are adamant that they want their own local government arrangements for their part of London. -
Avner Less (1916-1987): Das Verhör Von Adolf Eichmann
Newsletter 37 +++ Februar 2013 Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz Gedenkveranstaltung anlässlich des 71. Jahrestages der Wannsee-Konferenz von 1942 am 19. Januar 2013 im ver.di-Bildungszentrum Clara Sahlberg, Berlin-Wannsee *) Avner Less (1916-1987): Das Verhör von Adolf Eichmann Bettina Stangneth und Alon Less im Gespräch mit Norbert Kampe Norbert Kampe: Ich begrüße Sie herzlich anlässlich des heutigen Gedenktages zum 71. Jahrestag der Wannsee-Konferenz vom 20. Januar 1942. -
Bank of Israel
BANK OF ISRAEL The Government and Finance Committee of the Knesset Jerusalem In accordance with sections 59 and 60 of the Bank of Israel Law, 57141954, I respectfully submit herewith the Annual Report of the Bank of Israel for the year 1975. The Report is based on material prepared by the Research Department of the Bank. Most of the statistical data in Parts One and Two were supplied by the Central Bureau of Statistics. Some of the statistical information on which the 1974 Report and the 1976 National Budget were based was recently revised, and consequently some of the data in this Report have also been revised, with the changes being of more than a mere technical nature. As in the two preceding years, developments in 1975 were not even. There were sharp fluctuations in the level of economic activity and in several major economic variables. This was due partly to exogenous factors, especially the slump and subsequent recovery of world trade, and partly to deliberate government policy and the public's response to the measures introduced. In 1975 the economy had to grapple with the balance of payments problem, which occupies a prominent place in this Report. The main conclusion emerging from an analysis of developments in 1975 is that the positive results of the government's actionthe curbing of private consumption, a slight contraction of the real import surplus, and some weakening of inf lationwere far from adequate, given the dimensions and gravity of the balance of payments situation. The crucial question facing the economy remains the checking of import growth, and even more, the rapid expansion of exports. -

Julian Barnes
