I love teaching English as a foreign language. Every step my students take on the path of mastering this beautiful language reminds me of my own pains and delights as a learner of English as a second language. I was born and raised in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, where I grew to love English during my high school years. I became so fond of English that I set my heart on knowing more about the culture and the people behind the language. For five years at university, still in Hungary, I studied the literature and the history of the English speaking world; as well, I got familiar with how the English language evolved throughout the centuries. As I was also being trained at how English should be taught to non-native speakers of the language, and I was eager to put my knowledge into practice, I started teaching English in public schools during these years. After graduating, due to Jap- anese as my second major, I earned a scholarship from the Japanese government, and I lived in for the next four years. While researching the sociology of education and earning a master’s degree in the field of international economics, I did not give up my true voca- tion of teaching English; I taught English to Japanese adults at a language school. Japan was also the place where I met my husband, Corey, who brought me to the USA. We lived four years in southern California, where I taught in the ESL program of the University of California, Irvine, and had my first baby, Zoli. We moved to Kingwood two years ago, and though primarily I am at home with Zoli and his little sister, Sofie, I very much enjoy my time away from them while I teach in our ESOL program at Kingwood College.

She got my attention when she died in a tragic accident on August 31, 1997. It is not her death, however, that is important, but rather, her life. I want to recognize the fact that no matter how rich, beautiful, and famous she was, she dedicated her short life to humanitarian causes. She was a very devoted person who helped many people and charity organizations. During a visit to a hospital, and an AIDS patient began to cry when he saw Princess Diana. She also donated her clothes to auctions to raise money for charities. She always used her time to help those in need, like the victims of landmines. One day, Princess Diana was talking to Mother Theresa, and she asked her what she should do with her life. Mother Theresa answered that she should dedicate her life to helping others, and that is what she did until the day she died. Sonia Calzini, Italy, Oral Communication–High Intermediate In my English class, I had to write about my hero. I was staring at a piece of paper for long time without writing anything, and so I closed my notebook. I thought to myself, “How I can write about something that I don’t have?” The day to turn in the assignment was coming soon, and it still wasn’t ready. One night, I was think- ing about it, and I realized that I don’t have one hero; I have many heroes. For me, a hero is someone who supports, helps, and listens to another person. In each important moment of my life, happy or sad, I have had a hero. There have been many different people who have been a hero to me, because when something important happens, it is difficult or impossible to choose the person you want near you. I don’t want to name names, because they were, and still are, important to me in different ways, and writing their names would appear to put them in order of importance, and that is not fair. All of these people are very special to me, and I have learned a lot from them. They are my heroes, and I care for them deeply. I will be always grateful to them.
