New York Times May 20, 2010 David Gulick APPRECIATION A Type 55 roadster, worth more than $1 million today.Even as prices for vintage Ferraris made headlines, the Bugatti marque managed to hold the title of most expensive. A 1931 Type 41 Royale that sold at auction in 1987 brought nearly $10 million, setting a record that stood for two decades. This month, a 1936 Type 57SC Atlantic coupe that won the Pebble Beach Concours dʼÉlégance in 2003 sold privately for more than $28 million, according to Katie Hellwig, a spokeswoman for Gooding & Company, the auction house that brokered the sale. But every now and then there are Bugatti bargains. In January, a 1925 Brescia Type 22 sold to a museum collection at auction for $345,000. That car was a bit the worse for wear, having spent more than 70 years at the bottom of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland, the result of a dispute over import duties. -

Bugatti: with our history at heart and our eyes on the future Bugatti celebrates its 110th anniversary with two world premieres at Geneva Motor Show Molsheim, 5 March 2019. What a start to an anniversary year. At the first major international motor show in 2019, Bugatti is presenting two world premieres. At the Geneva Motor Show, the French luxury brand is showing the hyper sports car “La Voiture Noire1“ and the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti”. The special edition of the Chiron Sport , which is being produced in a limited series of 20 cars, celebrates the brand’s 110th anniversary as well as its French identity. However, the highlight will be the unveiling of “La Voiture Noire”, which had been kept secret up to the beginning of the show. This is a homage to the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. This one-off grand tourisme has already been sold and is the world’s most expensive new car, at €11 million. “In 2019, we are celebrating a special anniversary. Bugatti was established 110 years ago. These two models pay homage to our long tradition and to our French homeland,” says Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann. The third model on the Bugatti stand is also in line with this approach: the Bugatti Divo2, is a hyper sports car which is being produced in a limited edition of 40 vehicles. With its modified aerodynamics, it is designed for even higher lateral acceleration than the Chiron3 and ensures extreme driving pleasure. With “La Voiture Noire“, the French luxury automobile brand has once again shown that it produces the world’s most precious and exclusive hyper sports cars. -

Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order. -

Sein aufgeladener 2,3-Liter-8-Zylinder- Reihenmotor verhalf dem Fahrzeug zu bis dato unerreichten Höchstgeschwindigkeiten. Elegant auch seine Form, über die Bugatti Historiker Jonathan Wood ins Schwärmen gerät: Der hufeisenförmige Grill passt „in perfekter optischer Harmonie zu der anmutig ausbalancierten Seitenlinie, die sich über die gesamte Länge des Autos erstreckt… Die fließenden Kotflügel lassen das Fahrzeug außergewöhnlich elegant wirken, der tiefe Einstieg (Türen gab es zunächst keine) gewährt Komfort“. Jean Bugatti führte für dieses Modell eine neue zweifarbige Farbaufteilung ein, die Bugatti 2010 zum horizontalen Farbsplit inspirierte, der für den Veyron 16.4 Super Sport zum ersten Mal angeboten wurde. Der erste Type 55 Super Sport wird vor 90 Jahren für den Pariser Autosalon 1931 fertiggestellt. -

Um jeweils zweistellige Millionenbeträge für edles Blech zu zählen, waren noch nicht einmal alle Finger einer Hand erforderlich. Hat der Geldadel plötzlich die Tugend der Sparsamkeit entdeckt? Oder liegt es daran, dass die meisten Versteigerungen ohne anwesendes Publikum zumeist online stattfanden? So brachte zwar RM Sotheby’s in 27 Auktionen 4188 Fahrzeuge und automobile Devotionalien unter die Leute, doch 21 dieser Veranstaltungen gingen virtuell über die Bühne. Nur einmal, nämlich am 28. Oktober 2020, konnte der RM Sotheby’s-Auktionator mit einem finalen Hammerschlag 14,84 Millionen Dollar (damals 12,7 Millionen Euro) einstreichen – allerdings gleich für drei Autos auf einmal, ein Trio von Alfa Romeo BAT (Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica) angebotenen Konzeptautos. „Atem raubende Aerodynamik-Studien von Bertone-Designer Franco Scaglione auf Basis des Alfa Romeo 1900“, begeisterte sich das Fachblatt „Auto, Motor & Sport“. An zweiter Stelle der RM Sotheby’s Erfolgsstatistik rangierte ein Ferrari 550 GT1 Prodrive aus dem Jahr 2001 für vergleichsweise bescheidene 4,29 Millionen Dollar (3,61 Millionen Euro). So war diesmal für die üblichen Verdächtigen aus Maranello (Ferrari), Indianapolis (Duesenberg) oder Stuttgart (Mercedes-Benz) ein Platz unter den fünf teuersten Chromjuwelen 2020 Fehlanzeige. Die fünf Shootingstars an der Spitze kamen diesmal ausnahmslos aus Molsheim im französischen Elsass und trugen das Bugatti-Emblem auf der Kühlerhaube. Trotz Pandemie brachen historische Bugattis bei den Auktionshäusern Rekorde. -

The Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic – a style icon MOLSHEIM 22 02 2019 80 YEARS OLD, NOW ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST VALUABLE VEHICLES. Elegant, sporty, luxurious and rare. These are four of many epithets that can be applied to Bugatti. But there is one model for which they are especially appropriate: the Type 57 SC Atlantic Coupé is not just one of the Bugatti legends but perhaps the greatest. Only four of these cars were created between 1936 and 1938. Three of these extraordinary coupés are still in existence. They are regarded as the most valuable cars in the world. The automotive world has been searching for the fourth Atlantic for over 80 years. “The Atlantic is among the icons in Bugatti’s long tradition. In terms of elegance, quality and performance, the coupé was unique in its time and is still unique today. A luxury super sports car. For us, it is both an inspiration and a commitment,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. “Our current hyper sports cars Chiron1, Chiron Sport2 and Divo3 continue this tradition in the modern age – in line with the spirit of Bugatti.“ Ettore Bugatti’s son Jean started to modernize the luxury brand’s model policy in around 1930. Instead of several different models, he developed one base model from which he derived several different variants. Bugatti designed the Type 57 as a production car and as a racing variant, the ultimate grand tourisme. The range included various engine options and bodies such as Galibier (four-door saloon), Stelvio (convertible), Ventoux (two-door saloon) and Atalante (coupé).
