The Lost Bugatti
BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C WORDS CLAUDE TEISEN-SIMONY & DAVID LILLYWHITE ARCHIVE PICTURES BUGATTI TRUST A mysterious chassis fitted with a one-off Bugatti aero engine, discovered in a Turin museum, turns out to have links to a famous pilot and to Maserati’s first car. But could it also have been the first step towards the super-luxury Bugatti Royale saloon? The lost Bugatti 90 / MAGNETO MAGNETO / 91 BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C T This is one hell of a tale. It’s controversial at times, it brings in threads involving World War One fighter pilot Roland Garros, surprising links to Maserati, and the likely origins of not just Bugatti’s Grand Prix engines, but also the legendary Bugatti Royale. Most exciting of all, it introduces a remarkable aero-engined Bugatti that’s never been seen before. To whet your appetite, it’s a 14.5-litre and develops 250bhp at 2160rpm – Bugatti’s equivalent of the ‘Beast of Turin’ Fiat or the Benz-engined Scariscrow. Crucially, a large proportion of it is original, rescued from decades in hiding by a legendary Bugatti expert before moving on to its current owner. It’s been painstakingly researched, restored and part-recreated in secret by craftsmen in Denmark and the Czech Republic. To all but a select few, its existence remained unknown until its big reveal at the Rétromobile show in Paris on February 6. So, how did we get to this point? Let’s start with the engine, because actually it’s more important than the car itself in many ways. The story begins with French pilot Roland Garros, who in 1913 made the first-ever non-stop flight across the Mediterranean, flying a fast Morane-Saulnier monoplane. -

New York Times May 20, 2010 David Gulick APPRECIATION A Type 55 roadster, worth more than $1 million today.Even as prices for vintage Ferraris made headlines, the Bugatti marque managed to hold the title of most expensive. A 1931 Type 41 Royale that sold at auction in 1987 brought nearly $10 million, setting a record that stood for two decades. This month, a 1936 Type 57SC Atlantic coupe that won the Pebble Beach Concours dʼÉlégance in 2003 sold privately for more than $28 million, according to Katie Hellwig, a spokeswoman for Gooding & Company, the auction house that brokered the sale. But every now and then there are Bugatti bargains. In January, a 1925 Brescia Type 22 sold to a museum collection at auction for $345,000. That car was a bit the worse for wear, having spent more than 70 years at the bottom of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland, the result of a dispute over import duties. -

Pdf 0.16 Mb Bugatti Chronologie
Bugatti – „Art, Forme, Technique“ (August 2018) Chronologie 1881. Ettore wird am 15. September in Mailand geboren. -
Bugatti: with Our History at Heart and Our Eyes on the Future
Bugatti: with our history at heart and our eyes on the future Bugatti celebrates its 110th anniversary with two world premieres at Geneva Motor Show Molsheim, 5 March 2019. What a start to an anniversary year. At the first major international motor show in 2019, Bugatti is presenting two world premieres. At the Geneva Motor Show, the French luxury brand is showing the hyper sports car “La Voiture Noire1“ and the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti”. The special edition of the Chiron Sport , which is being produced in a limited series of 20 cars, celebrates the brand’s 110th anniversary as well as its French identity. However, the highlight will be the unveiling of “La Voiture Noire”, which had been kept secret up to the beginning of the show. This is a homage to the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. This one-off grand tourisme has already been sold and is the world’s most expensive new car, at €11 million. “In 2019, we are celebrating a special anniversary. Bugatti was established 110 years ago. These two models pay homage to our long tradition and to our French homeland,” says Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann. The third model on the Bugatti stand is also in line with this approach: the Bugatti Divo2, is a hyper sports car which is being produced in a limited edition of 40 vehicles. With its modified aerodynamics, it is designed for even higher lateral acceleration than the Chiron3 and ensures extreme driving pleasure. With “La Voiture Noire“, the French luxury automobile brand has once again shown that it produces the world’s most precious and exclusive hyper sports cars. -

Bugatti Heritage – a Year of Records
Bugatti Heritage – A year of records MOLSHEIM 02 02 2021 CLASSIC BUGATTI CARS ACHIEVED RECORD RESULTS AT AUCTIONS IN 2020. Historic Bugatti cars continue to rise in value. Five automotive masterpieces from Molsheim were the five most valuable vehicles sold at auction internationally in 2020. Despite the pandemic, historic Bugattis broke records at the auction houses Bonhams and Gooding & Company: never before have the five most expensive cars sold at auction been produced by a single manufacturer. Bugatti vehicles have always been exclusive. But as their age increases, so does their value – as shown by an analysis carried out by Classic Analytics, a company specialising in international market analysis and valuation of classic cars worldwide. “Bugattis from the Ettore and Jean Bugatti era, especially in their original condition and with a history of racing, have always been among the most expensive classic cars on the market. This trend has held steady and in fact even increased despite the general decline in interest in pre-war vehicles,” says Frank Wilke, Managing Director of Classic Analytics. Classic Analytics belongs to the Hagerty Group, the largest classic car service provider in the USA. The top ten ranking is based on an internal auction database in which all international classic car auctions over the course of a year are observed and evaluated. “The current situation has certainly brought about a change in the auction market, from face-to-face to online auctions. But prices for exclusive, classic vehicles remain stable at a high level,” says Frank Wilke. “Every historic Bugatti vehicle is unique. Those built between 1920 and the end of the 1930s set standards in both performance and design. -

Bugatti Celebrates European Premiere of the Divo in Paris
Bugatti celebrates European premiere of the Divo in Paris MOLSHEIM / PARIS 01 10 2018 THE VENUE FOR THE FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE OF THE BUGATTI DIVO ON EUROPEAN SOIL COULD HARDLY BE MORE APPROPRIATE. THE DIVO IS COMING HOME. The venue for the first public appearance of the Bugatti Divo1 on European soil could hardly be more appropriate. The Divo is coming home. The French luxury brand Bugatti is celebrating the European premiere of its latest model in Paris one month after its world premiere at “The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering” in Monterey, California. On the day before the first press day of the 2018 Paris Motor Show, Bugatti unveiled the Divo before an audience of selected media representatives and customers at an exclusive event in the French capital. In developing the Divo, Bugatti wanted to create a super sports car with a different character from the Chiron which would still be immediately recognizable as a Bugatti. The Divo, which is powered by Bugatti’s iconic eight-litre W16 engine with a power output of 1,500 PS, is tuned for agility, nimbleness and optimum handling performance on winding roads, without any concessions with respect to the usual levels of comfort and luxury. The aerodynamics of the model have been intensively fine-tuned and the suspension and chassis settings have been modified. As a result, the Divo is 35 kilograms lighter and has 90 kilograms more downforce than the standard Chiron2. The lateral acceleration of the Divo has been boosted to 1.6g. Its maximum speed is limited to 380 km/h.
