The holotype specimen of the Late Triassic dinosauriform Caseosaurus crosbyensis is redescribed and evaluated phylogenetically for the first time, providing new anatomical information and data on the earliest dinosaurs and their evolution within the dinosauromorph lineage. Historically, Caseosaurus crosbyensis has been considered to represent an early saurischian dinosaur, and often a herrerasaur. More recent work on Triassic dinosaurs has cast doubt over its supposed dinosaurian affinities and uncertainty about particular features in the holotype and only known specimen has led to the species being regarded as a dinosauriform of indeterminate position. Here, we present a new diagnosis for Caseosaurus crosbyensis and refer additional material to the taxon—a partial right ilium from Snyder Quarry. Our com- parisons and phylogenetic analyses suggest that Caseosaurus crosbyensis belongs in a clade with herrerasaurs and that this clade is the sister taxon of Dinosauria, rather than positioned within it. This result, along with other recent analyses of early dinosaurs, pulls apart what remains of the “traditional” group of dinosaurs collectively termed saurischians into a polyphyletic assemblage and implies that Dinosauria should be regarded as composed exclusively of Ornithoscelida (Ornithischia + Theropoda) and Sauropodomorpha. In addition, our analysis recovers the enigmatic European taxon Saltopus elginensis among herrerasaurs for the first time. -

This bonebed lies in a narrow channcl deposit of intrafonnational conglomerate in the Redonda Fonnation. Stratigraphically, this specimen comes from strata identical to the type Apachean land·vertebrate faunachron and thus of Apachean (latest Triassic: latc Norian·Rhaetian) age. The skull lacks most of the snout but is otherwise complete and in excellent condition. As preserved, the skull measures 780 mm long, and was probably 1200 mm or longer in life, making it nearly as large as the holotype of Ru{iodon (- lIfaehaeroprosoprls . ..Smilwlldllls) gngorii, and one of the largest published phytosallr sku ll s. The diagnostic features of Redondasall'us present in the skull include robnst squamosal bars extending posteriorly well beyond the occiput and supratemporal fenestrae that are completely concealed in dorsal view. -

UDDEN : It is with great pleasure that I accept the invitation of the Director of the Geological Survey, Dr. George Otis Smith, to write a brief foreword to this report on the progress of a search for potash in which both the United States Geological Survey and the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology have cooperated for a number of years. It is a search which now appears not to have been in vain. The thought that potash must have been precipitated in the seas in which the salt beds of the Permian accumulated in America has, I presume, been in the minds of all geologists interested in the study of the Permian "Red Beds." The great extent and great thickness of these salt beds early seemed to me a sufficient reason for looking for potash in connection with any explorations of these beds in Texas. On learning, through Mr. W. E. Wrather, in 1911, of the deep boring made by the S. M. Swenson estate at Spur, in Dickens County, I made arrangements, through the generous aid of Mr: C. A. Jones, in charge of the local Swenson interests, to procure specimens of the materials penetrated. It was likewise possible, later on, to obtain a series of 14 water samples from this boring, taken at depths rang ing from 800 to 3,000 feet below the surface. These samples were obtained at a tune when the water had been standing undisturbed in the hole for two months, while no drilling had been done. -

LUCAS2 1Department of Geology, Appalachian State University, ASU Box 32067, Boone, NC 28608-2067; 2New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 1801 Mountain Road NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104-1375 Abstract—A long-term goal of vertebrate biostratigraphers is to construct a microvertebrate biostratigraphy for lower Mesozoic rocks that complements and extends the mammal-based biostratigraphy in place for Upper Cretaceous-Recent deposits. Here we report substantial progress toward achieving this goal based on the distribu- tion of microvertebrate fossils in the Upper Triassic Chinle Group of the western USA. This biostratigraphic hypothesis independently corroborates the existing macrovertebrate biostratigraphy, recognizing four temporally successive assemblages—the Otischalkian, Adamanian, Revueltian, and Apachean, with subdivisions of the Adamanian (St. Johnsian and Lamyan) and Revueltian (Barrancan and Lucianoan). Many microvertebrate taxa, unfortunately, have long stratigraphic ranges and thus, while widespread and easily recognized, are not reliable index fossils. These taxa include the chondrichthyans Lissodus and Reticulodus synergus, most lepidosauromorphs (including sphenodontians), and various microvertebrate archosauromorphs. However, other taxa have relatively short stratigraphic ranges and occur in multiple localities and thus have some utility as index taxa. Adamanian index taxa include the procolophonid(?) Colognathus obscurus and the putative ornithischians Tecovasaurus murryi, Crosbysaurus harrisae and Krzyzanowskisaurus hunti. Revueltian index taxa include the chondrichthyan Reticulodus synergus, the crurotarsan Revueltosaurus callenderi and the cynodont Pseudotriconodon chatterjeei.
