About Dundee 2010 - Introduction 1 Introduction Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city and is situated on the north coast of the mouth of the Tay Estuary, in a stunning location. Edinburgh lies 60 miles to the south, and 67 miles to the north.

The most recent estimate of Dundee’s population is 143,390 (General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) 2009 Mid-year Population Estimate). Dundee has a sizeable student population, and is home to the , the University of Abertay Dundee and Dundee College.

The Dundee City Council area covers 6,300 hectares (24 square miles) and is, geographically, the smallest local authority area in Scotland. It is bordered by Council to the west and Angus Council to the north and east. The former Tayside Regional Council area previously covered all three councils, and Dundee continues to serve as the regional centre for this area and north-east , with an estimated catchment population of some 400,000 people.

Dundee is Scotland's sunniest city, with an average of over 1,500 hours of sunshine per year from 1971 to 2000. [Met Office]

Easy access is available in Dundee to the main road and rail networks. The A90 Edinburgh to Aberdeen Road passes through the City, and the connects to north-east Fife. Regular First ScotRail services between and Aberdeen, and Edinburgh and Aberdeen stop at Dundee, as do GNER services between London Kings Cross and Aberdeen. Virgin also provides daily cross- country train services between Dundee and Carlisle, via Edinburgh. Scottish City Link and Stagecoach operate bus services between Dundee and Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Fife and other destinations.

Dundee Airport, located in the heart of Scotland, is the most convenient fly-in destination for some 1,000 square miles of Central Scotland. Situated only two miles from Dundee City Centre, and less than 10 minutes by taxi from mainline rail and bus stations, it affords quick and easy access to Fife via the nearby Tay Road Bridge, and lies within five minutes of the main Scottish Trunk Road network. There are scheduled flights between Dundee and London City Airport, Belfast, Birmingham and Jersey (summer 2009).

Dundee is the only Scottish city to be featured in the Here and Now UK edition of the board game Monopoly. The place was won by an online poll by the game's manufacturer Parker. The square features a picture of Claypotts Castle and has a price tag of £2.2m

3 Population Dundee City Council has an estimated population of 143,390 as of the 30th June 2009 (GROS Mid Year Estimate). Chart 1 shows historical population totals for the City since 1801, and indicates estimated population projection to 2033. Chart 1: Dundee City's historic and projected population, 1801 to 2033

(source: GROS) Chart 2 focuses on the change in population since 1991. It can be seen that the estimated population experienced a gradual decline until 2005 when the figure stabilised. GROS population estimates since 2007 have shown a slight increase.

Chart 2: Dundee City's population, 1991 to 2009

(Source: GROS) By 2033 the population of Dundee is projected to be 135,229. This is a decrease of 5.7% compared to the estimated population in 2009. The distribution of the change by age group is shown in Chart 3. The chart includes Scotland's figures for comparison. Over the 25 year period, the age group that is projected to increase the most is the 75+ plus age group.

There was also a positive total for natural change, i.e. more births than deaths. Chart 4: Migration, in, out and net, Dundee City annual average, 2007 to 2009

6 About Dundee 2010 - Population Migration in and out of Dundee is summarised in Chart 4. On average in 2007- 2009 there was a net inflow of 339 people into Dundee City per year, meaning that more people entered Dundee than left. The 16 to 29 year old age group accounted for the largest group of in-migrants into Dundee City. The largest number of out-migrants was also in the 16 to 29 age group.

Chart 5: Live births by sex, Dundee City, 1999 to 2009

(source: GROS) The number of live births in Dundee for the past decade is shown in Chart 5. In 2009 there were 1,768 live births in Dundee; this was a 1.8% decrease from the year before. This equates to 56.7 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.

Chart 7: Household Estimates and Projections 1991 to 2033

(Source: GROS) The current estimated number of households in Dundee City is 69,228 [GROS 2009 mid year estimate]. It is projected that this figure will rise by around 6% to 72,290 by 2033 [GROS 2008 based projections]. As seen in Chart 7 previous mid year household projections had anticipated less of an increase than the current figure; in 2004 a decline was predicted.

Chart 8 shows the household estimates and projections by number of persons in the household. The proportion of one person households is predicted to increase from 42% to 49% by 2033. Households with two or more adults and one or more children are forecast to drop from 14% to 10% of all households over the same period.

14 About Dundee 2010 - Housing Chart 14: Volume of residential property sales per quarter

(Source: GROS) Chart 14 shows the number of residential sales per quarter for Dundee. A clear seasonal pattern can be seen, with more property sales taking place during the summer months. From 2003 until 2007 the year on year increase in sales volume due to the property boom can be seen. The effects of the recent recession and stalling of the property market are clearly visible with the slump in sales volumes during 2008. This is a pattern that is reflected across Scotland.

Chart 15 compares the quarterly median property prices for Dundee and the whole of Scotland. Again the property boom is clearly evident from 2003 to 2007. Since then Scottish property prices have remained largely stagnant with only seasonal fluctuations evident. Dundee has tracked the movement of Scottish property prices very closely. Since 2007 Dundee property prices have fluctuated more than Scottish prices. This will be, at least in part, due to the smaller size of the Dundee property market.

In 2003 the median property price in Dundee was 70% of that in Scotland.

In 2010 the median property price in Dundee is 86% of that in Scotland.
