Pontius Pilate (3/28/21) Present, Prepare, Remember Week Nine - Pontius Pilate (3/28/21) I. Pontius Pilate A. And while Pontius Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” (Matthew 27:19) B. To Be Present, And To Prepare, We Must Remember 1. Thesis: To be fully present in this moment, and to be prepared for the cost of discipleship and the culmination of the kingdom of God, we must remember: When face-to-Face with Jesus, the righteous Man, Pontius Pilate chose to have nothing to do with Him. 2. And while Pontius Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” (Matthew 27:19) II. A Consideration & A Question A. Consider those who came face-to-Face with the righteous Man, Jesus. Did they have anything to do with Him? B. Those to be considered 1. John the Baptist leapt in the womb. 2. The shepherds left the manger praising God. 3. Simeon & Anna were permitted to die. 4. The magi traveled 100’s and 100’s of miles to pay homage. 5. Andrew and John wanted to be with Him wherever He was staying. 6. Nicodemus was born again. 7. Peter said, “Depart from me, Lord,” and, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” 8. The man with the legion fell down before Jesus, then asked, “May I come with you too?” 9. After being delivered, Mary Magdalene followed Him. 10. Mary of Bethany anointed Him, then anointed Him again. 11. Martha served a dinner in His honor the week of Passover. 12. Levi left the tax booth and followed Him. 13. A rich, young ruler, with great sorrow, walked away from Him. 14. Forgiven and rescued, the woman caught in the act of adultery is called to go and sin no more. 15. The woman at the Sychar well leaves her water pot and her old life behind. 16. The man born blind chooses Jesus over institution and worships the Good Shepherd. 17. Thomas followed Him back to deadly Jerusalem, questioned Him in the Upper Room, refused to believe His resurrection, and put his hands in all of His wounds. 18. Zacchaeus climbed a tree to see Him, then gave away everything that kept him from following Him. 19. Nine lepers walk away with their healing, while one returns to Jesus with a, “Thank You!” 20. Malchus walked away with a healed ear. 21. Judas received the dipped bread from His hand and placed a kiss on His cheek. 22. Annas and Caiaphas said, “No!” to Him, and, “Yes!” to Caesar. 23. The men on the road to Emmaus didn’t recognize Him. 24. Pontius Pilate had nothing to do with Jesus, the righteous Man, washing his hands of the whole incident. C. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:11-13) III. What Do You Do With the Righteous Man Who Stands Before You? A. And while Pontius Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” (Matthew 27:19) B. The greatest roadblock to giving our lives to Jesus is a world that acknowledges Jesus as a righteous Man, but calls us to have nothing to do with Him. As a result, we simply wash our hands of Jesus and His crucifying rescue of us. C. What do you do with the righteous Man Who stands before you? D. If Jesus is the righteous Man and is standing before us, then why would we have nothing to do with Him? Why don’t we have everything to do with Him? E. What do you do with the righteous Man Who stands before you? IV. To Be Present, and To Prepare, We Must Remember A. The Message: Pilate was held accountable for his own choices. Yet, will you have everything to do with this righteous Man? On this day of hosannas, just days away from the shouts of, “Crucify Him!” will you have everything to do with Jesus Messiah and give your life to Him? B. How does Pontius Pilate’s history help you to be fully present and prepare you for the future?.

    SAINTS & SINNERS: JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA March 24 2021 I Corinthians 15:12-26 John 19:31-42 In the holy name of Jesus, Amen. For our Lord’s birth and early life, God the Father provided a man named of Joseph. A righteous, pious man who would raise the little baby Jesus in the knowledge of the Scriptures and instill in Him the disciplines of a devout, religious life. Namely, the practice of morning and evening prayer, the routine of attending synagogue each week, as well as making regular pilgrimages to Jerusalem throughout the year. So, every day, once a week, and special times throughout the year, Joseph taught Jesus to turn His attention toward God and the truths of God. All of this, along with our Lord’s carpentry skills, Jesus learned from Joseph. For our Lord’s death, God the Father provided another Joseph, who was not our Lord’s teacher, as the first Joseph was, but rather, was one of our Lord’s disciples, a learner of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea. This Joseph was a respected member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish religious council in Jerusalem, that at times, was a source of consternation for our Lord during His earthly ministry. Just listen to how St. Paul, who wasn’t a member of the Sanhedrin, but he clearly was on track to become one, that is, if the resurrected Jesus hadn’t met him on the Road to Damascus. Listen to how St. Paul described those of this elite religious, ruling class— they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

Jesus has just finished a time of intense prayer and has returned to his disciples when all four gospel’s relate that a mob led by Judas arrives in the Garden of Gethsemane to arrest Jesus. In an attempt to defend Jesus one of the disciples grabs up a sword and slashes off the ear of a man in the crowd. The Background of the Miracle The scene is pretty ludicrous a multitude of armed men to take one seemly defense-less man. (52) But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. (53) Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? (54) How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?" (55) In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me.

He’d come into the world for the purpose of telling people the truth, he said. Hah! “What is truth?” I asked him. Not that I was all that interested in what he might say. I knew what truth was from my vantage point. Power. Power is truth. That’s what I showed him. I, Pontius Pilate, Procurator of the Roman province of Judea, servant of my lord the Emperor Tiberius, I showed him. I, Pontius Pilate, appointed head of a conquered people, obedient to the state I serve faithfully, I showed your Jesus that power is truth. Yes, I am the one who sentenced your leader to be executed. I don’t deny it. I’m not exactly proud of it, but it was the job to be done. I washed my hands of the whole affair a long time ago. I had my orders, you know. Keep the peace. Maintain law and order. Use whatever force is necessary to keep matters from getting out of hand. So I did. I was just doing my job. Do you really think you would have handed down a different verdict if you’d been in my place? I’d had my eye on your Jesus of Nazareth for some time. Does that surprise you? Listen, you don’t get to be governor of a Roman province by being indifferent to potential troublemakers.

While they were walking down the street, the villager stopped suddenly and said: “Listen to the lovely sound of that cricket.” His cousin was surprised. How in the world he could hear the voice of cricket within a busy, noisy city. Indeed, the villager did find a cricket in the corner of the street. The city guy was astonished at how his cousin heard the sound of a cricket. The villager said, “Let me explain.” He took from his pocket a pile of coins and dropped them on the ground. Suddenly most of the people who were walking around stopped and paid attention to what they had heard. The wise villager said: "We hear ... what we listen to." The question to us is: “What do we hear in Fresno?” Let me introduce to you today a new character from the Bible: Mr. Malchus. He was a servant (perhaps a slave, the Greek word is dulos) of the high priest. It is Jewish name from Malakh, which means king or kingdom. That evening, he was coming with Judas Iscariot to arrest Jesus. Think how he felt psychologically. He was coming to arrest the most wanted person in those days, a man who thought he was the Messiah. However, instead of arresting Jesus, he got his ear chopped off. And who did it? Peter, our man, the rock, the man to whom Jesus would give the keys of heaven (according to John).
