Present, Prepare, Remember Week Nine - (3/28/21)

I. Pontius Pilate A. And while Pontius Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I sufered greatly in a dream because of Him.” (:19) B. To Be Present, And To Prepare, We Must Remember 1. Thesis: To be fully present in this moment, and to be prepared for the cost of discipleship and the culmination of the kingdom of God, we must remember: When face-to-Face with , the righteous Man, Pontius Pilate chose to have nothing to do with Him. 2. And while Pontius Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I sufered greatly in a dream because of Him.” (Matthew 27:19) II. A Consideration & A Question A. Consider those who came face-to-Face with the righteous Man, Jesus. Did they have anything to do with Him? B. Those to be considered 1. leapt in the womb. 2. The shepherds left the manger praising God. 3. & Anna were permitted to die. 4. The magi traveled 100’s and 100’s of miles to pay homage. 5. Andrew and John wanted to be with Him wherever He was staying. 6. was born again. 7. Peter said, “Depart from me, Lord,” and, “You are the , the Son of the Living God.” 8. The man with the fell down before Jesus, then asked, “May I come with you too?” 9. After being delivered, followed Him. 10. anointed Him, then anointed Him again. 11. served a dinner in His honor the week of . 12. Levi left the tax booth and followed Him. 13. A rich, young ruler, with great sorrow, walked away from Him. 14. Forgiven and rescued, the woman caught in the act of adultery is called to go and sin no more. 15. The woman at the Sychar well leaves her water pot and her old life behind. 16. The man born blind chooses Jesus over institution and worships the . 17. Thomas followed Him back to deadly , questioned Him in the Upper Room, refused to believe His resurrection, and put his hands in all of His wounds. 18. climbed a tree to see Him, then gave away everything that kept him from following Him. 19. Nine lepers walk away with their healing, while one returns to Jesus with a, “Thank You!” 20. walked away with a healed ear. 21. Judas received the dipped bread from His hand and placed a kiss on His cheek. 22. and said, “No!” to Him, and, “Yes!” to Caesar. 23. The men on the road to Emmaus didn’t recognize Him. 24. Pontius Pilate had nothing to do with Jesus, the righteous Man, washing his hands of the whole incident. C. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (:11-13) III. What Do You Do With the Righteous Man Who Stands Before You? A. And while Pontius Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I sufered greatly in a dream because of Him.” (Matthew 27:19) B. The greatest roadblock to giving our lives to Jesus is a world that acknowledges Jesus as a righteous Man, but calls us to have nothing to do with Him. As a result, we simply wash our hands of Jesus and His crucifying rescue of us. C. What do you do with the righteous Man Who stands before you? D. If Jesus is the righteous Man and is standing before us, then why would we have nothing to do with Him? Why don’t we have everything to do with Him? E. What do you do with the righteous Man Who stands before you? IV. To Be Present, and To Prepare, We Must Remember A. The Message: Pilate was held accountable for his own choices. Yet, will you have everything to do with this righteous Man? On this day of hosannas, just days away from the shouts of, “Crucify Him!” will you have everything to do with Jesus and give your life to Him? B. How does Pontius Pilate’s history help you to be fully present and prepare you for the future?
