    Geology Situated on the boundary between the Ordovician Skiddaw Group and the Borrowdale Volcanic Group, Derwentwater Independent Hostel is perfectly located for studying the oldest rocks in the Lake District. We have 500 million years of geological history on our doorstep! The Skiddaw Group lies to the north of the hostel, while to the south you will see the craggier terrain of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. You will also be able to study evidence of former glacial activity in Borrowdale, mainly in the form of depositional features. There are lots of old mines and quarries in Borrowdale and the adjoining valleys, and many Regionally Important Geological/Geomorphological Sites (RIGS). We’re proud to be an integral part of the South Lakes property, a gloriously diverse area that covers everything from lakeshore to high fell. Our patch includes famous beauty spots like Tarn Hows and Windermere lake, Beatrix Potter’s house Hill Top, an art gallery of her work and even a castle. With 15 working farms and a wonderful network of paths linking all this together that’s a lot of land to look after! That’s where we come in. We work on National Trust land and tenant farms and, in partnership with many other organisations, right across the incredible Lake District landscape. With our army of willing volunteers from a huge cross-section of society, we are vital in helping the Trust with its long term goal of improving the health and resilience of the Lakes, and creating a ‘better, bigger, and more joined-up’ natural environment, where wildlife can thrive. We’re enormously grateful for all the help we get from volunteers towards achieving this, but since 1969 our ethos has always been that volunteers should get as much out of this work as we do. We want people to return home with a warm, tingly feeling – knowing that they’ve helped to look after this wonderful place, perhaps having learnt some new skills or gained some new found confidence, certainly having had some fun along the way! This yearbook is our way of saying thankyou to everyone, we’d have a much harder job looking after our area without your help and we look forward to seeing many of you again in 2018! Rayson1 1TU Lancaster University &Lancaster, UK Abstract Changing landscape presents a problem for both conservation and education at heritage sites. We consider the site of Tarn Hows in the English Lake District National Park, a site which has had significant landscape change over the past 200 years, from developing tree coverage, to the merging of three lakes into one. We created an automated process that combines an elevation map and a vegetation map to build a 3D representation of the landscape. We used this tool to create a 3D Deep Map of Tarn Hows, representing the site’s landscape at multiple periods over time, allowing them to be viewed side by side and explored in an interactive environment. This 3D Deep Map provides an exploratory resource for site authorities to educate the public about the historic environment, with embedded multimedia in the application to provide additional information to users that might be disruptive or impractical to display on site. The 3D Deep Map also provides a tool for conservators to plan site maintenance to best maintain the integrity of the historic landscape without negatively impacting visitors’ experience of the iconic site. 1.
