Besides being the prominent life sustaining component in the ecosystem, water plays a versatile role in the functioning of the bio-geo-chemical cycles. A backwater means the network of interconnected lakes and they were formed by the actions of shore currents and sea waves constructing low depressions at the mouth of rivers. The backwaters of Kerala are located where the freshwater from rivers meet Lakshadweep Sea in the west. Man has been using the backwaters for ages for fishing, transportation, agriculture and other related activities. Edava- Nadayara and Paravur backwaters lies between Lakshadweep Sea and Western Ghats in the south-western part of Kerala, India and is well known for their scenic beauty. Ithikkara river is the main feeder of Paravur lake and Ayiroor River, which is the second smallest river in Kerala finally emptying into the Edava- Nadayara lake. The backwater system has a total area of 101.026 sq. kms including the lakes which covers 10.325 sq. kms. The main objective of this study is to analyse the physical settings and characteristics of Edava- Nadayara and Paravur backwaters by inventorying the geomorphology, geology, climate, soil, slope, flora and fauna with the help of primary and secondary data sources.

Sreeja3 PG & Research Department of Zoology, Sree Narayana College, Kollam-691 001, India Abstract: The present study is aimed at assessing the water quality status of the Polachira wetland. Polachira is one of the important fresh water wetlands of Kerala coast, located in the Southern part of Kollam district. The study was carried out for a period of two years from October 2012 to September 2014. The parameters estimated were temperature, depth, pH, alkalinity, Salinity, DO, dissolved CO2, Hardness, TS, TDS, TSS and the nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate and sulphate). Accepted standard methods were followed for the estimations. The observations were statistically interpreted. The detailed investigation of the parameters which are well within the desirable limit indicates that the Polachira wetland is a fairly unpolluted, except for high alkalinity and hardness, which can be attributed to natural causes and agricultural runoff. Introduction Literature survey revealed that available literature about the Polachira wetland is only its sedimental characteristics and Polachira is one of the important wetlands of Kerala coast, avian fauna. The present investigation was therefore, taken located in the Southern part of Kollam district. It is located up with a view to understanding and assessing the water in the Chirakkara Grama Panchayath and is about 5 Km quality of Polachira wetland. South of Chathannoor town and 6 Km north east of Paravur town. Polachira lies between 8050‟0‟‟N to 8051‟0‟‟N 2.

Moreover, a drastic diet to cut your daily calories by a fifth could ward off cancer and diabetes.The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, follows research showing that fasting in middle age, or going without food after dark, can help people to live longer, healthier lives. Scientists have found it is possible to turn back the clock and live longer using extreme dieting in middle age.In monkeys, stopping them from eating between 5pm and 8am extended their lives by 10 per cent, compared to eating normally. Researchers say the findings that dieting can fight ageing will also apply to humans, who share 93 per cent of the same genes. Restricting the food we put into our bodies appears to make them more able to fight off the illnesses which accompany old age.Lead author Professor Rozalyn Anderson, from the University of Wisconsin, said: 'Cutting your calories delays ageing, probably because the body uses energy from food differently to become more resilient. 'By targeting aging itself we could, instead of fighting cancer or cardiovascular disease individually, target the full spectrum of disease simultaneously.'The latest study is hoped to settle a debate which has been raging for the last seven years on cutting calories.The University of Wisconsin found in 2009 that rhesus monkeys given 20 per cent less food, compared to those who ate at will, lived far longer - lasting nine years beyond the average lifespan of 26 years.
