A silent sentinel since the tum of the Century, the light house was built in 1902. It was reconstructed in 1940 by A. N. Seal, Engineer-in-Chief of Light House Department. The light emanating from 144 feet light house is visible at a distance of 18 miles out in the sea. The surging surface of the sea on one side and the panorama oflush green coconut trees on the other side are seen from the top. It was built to safeguard seamen from treacherous reefs of Thangassery. ,...-_ - I~- ~~~---- _-._ () , -~ l- II \,, <t_J oo_ ~ <t C ) Co::: -- ... , I / Z UI :E .(' ::: q o. ~ « _,_L _. -, 0 ,/ ~ l i e) I- / U f" cr: f l CC o e/) ~- o (f) ~ « 0 cr: ::> n... This publication provides Primary Census Abstract (PCA) data up to Village level for the rural areas and provides similar details, ward-wise for each City or Town and also provides the present status on availability of important civic amenities/infra-structural facilities in Villages and Towns of the District concerned. This publication has proved to be of immense utility as it is considered as an essential and basic document for the purpose of delimitation of constituencies, formulation of local level and regional plan and also as an aid to district administration. The publication of District Census Handbook CDCHB) was first introduced during the 1951 Census which contained a few important Census tables and PCA for each Village and Town of the District. Thereafter, at each successive Censuses, the scope and coverage of this publication was enlarged. The DCHB published at the 1961 Census provided a comprehensive descriptive account of the District, administrative statistics, Census tables and a Village and Town Directory including PCA. The 1971 Census DCHB series was planned in three parts. Part-A related to Village and Town Directory, Part-B to Village and Town PCA and Part-C to comprised analytical report, administrative statistics, District Census tables and certain analytical tables based on PCA and amenity data in respect of Villages. However, in some States, Part-C was confined to District Census tables and in a few cases altogether given up due to delay in compilation and printing. In 1981 Census, new features along with the restructuring of the formats of Village and Town Directory were introduced in the DCHB. These were published in two parts for each District. While Part-A comprised Village and Town Directories, the PCA ofViUage and Town (ward-wise) including the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes PCA up to Tahsil! Town level were provided in Part-B. In restructuring the format of Village Directory, all the amenities except Electricity were brought together and if any amenity was not available in the referent Village, the distance in broad ranges from the nearest place having such amenity was given. Information on some new items such as Adu~t Literacy Centres, Primary Health sub-Centres and Community Health Workers in the Village were provided so as to meet the requirements of some of the Revised Minimum Needs Programme. Similarly information on approach to the Village was also provided for the first time in the Village Directory so as to give the details on the number of inaccessible Villages in each District.

  • Diversity of Mangroves in Asramam, Kollam District, Kerala Ratheesh N.1, K.B
ARTICLE Diversity of Mangroves in Asramam, Kollam District, Kerala Ratheesh N.1, K.B. Manoj2 and Lekshmi S.3 Received on 3-2-2017 Accepted on 2-4-2017 Abstract A study was conducted on the floristic diversity and structural analysis of the Mangroves in Asramam, Kollam District. A total of 6 mangrove species belonging to 4 families were enumerated. The true mangrove species are confined to salty-marshy environment along back waters, where as the mangrove associate species were also found in other areas apart from the mangrove environment The study resulted dominance of Sonneratia caseolaris L, which distributed in all quadrates studied, followed by Rhizophora apiculata. The mangrove species Avicennia officinalis recorded lowest density. Maximum relative basal area was represented by Sonneratia caseolaris followed by Rhizophora apiculata. Hence these species registered the highest Importance Value Index. At present the mangrove continuity in this area are lost and are faced destruction. Urbanization, tourism development and chemical discharge are some of the major common threats that dwindle mangrove ecosystems in the study area. Conservation strategies are to be made to conserve the existing pristine ecosystem in the area. Key words: Mangroves, diversity, abundance , Important Value Index, Introduction The threats to the mangrove ecosystems could be Mangrove forest otherwise called mangrove broadly grouped into both natural as well as community, mangrove ecosystem, tidal forest, etc., grow anthropogenic. The mangroves in the State are in conditions where no other plant species can survive threatened with unprecedented destruction, which (Hutchings and Saenger 1987).
