Drinks firms say there is considerable potential for the on-trade to boost revenues through sales of bottled beers – providing operators take a pro- active approach. Beer menus are, more and more, being held up as a top tip for selling bottled beers; but a diverse range as well as better staff knowledge and engagement are also important to driving sales. Liam Newton, vice president of marketing at Carlsberg, believes that a well-chosen array of beers with their own designated menu can boost sales.

Simple solutions, such as a chalkboard outlining the range available, are great options.

“How many beers do I need in the fridge?” is a question we As with other drinks categories, premium is making waves in bottled beer often hear in trade from our customers. The answer is rarely straightforward. We often concentrate on the importance of a well-balanced draught range, and sometimes forget about the huge opportunity a well-stocked fridge of bottled, and increasingly canned, beers can present.

Packaged beer, ale and cider allows an operator to experiment with range much more quickly and simply than changing the draught line up. The ease of ordering a new case for the fridge from your wholesaler versus removing draught equipment and replacing glassware cannot be overlooked. Trying a new packaged product also allows you to gauge interest from your drinkers and makes them feel empowered and involved in your stocking decisions.

When we know consumers are visiting the pub less often (in 2016, there were 39 million fewer visits versus 2010 in the UK), providing drinkers with a genuine point of difference will encourage them to return more often.
