He heads G several successful companies and serves on numerous boards, but at 68 there’s nowhere he’d rather be than at the track watch- ing a horse train or in the foaling barn while his next potential stakes winner takes its first breath. But I married someone who loves horses more than me.” – Sally Humphrey And while the congenial Humphrey and his wife, Sally, are well known among Thoroughbred enthusiasts as breeders of the 1980 Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk, 1985 Belmont Stakes winner Crème Fraiche, and other champions, Watts will be the first to say ”Every horse is special.” Like most breeders, Humphrey’s end goal is to produce and race high-caliber horses, but watching his homebreds trans- form from foals to athletes is one of his biggest thrills. “We love to be there when they foal, and we love to see them develop,” he said.     Kentucky Derby TRIVIA & FUN FACTS On a warm, sunny, Monday afternoon, May 17, 1875, fifteen three-year old Thoroughbred racehorses went to the post to compete in the first Kentucky Derby. About 10,000 fans were on hand to see H.P. McGrath’s colt Aristides set the pace and fight off all challengers to win. He was ridden to victory by jockey Oliver Lewis, one of thirteen African American jockeys to compete in the race. Since then, the Kentucky Derby has been held every year at Louisville’s Churchill Downs Racetrack, making it the longest continuous held sporting event in the United States. The race was developed by a group called the Louisville Jockey Club, led by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of the famous explorer William Clark of Lewis and Clark. Clark traveled to Europe, studying Thoroughbred racing business practices, and upon returning to Kentucky, led the Louisville Jockey Club in the building of a racetrack south of the city on property owned by Clark’s uncles, John and Henry Churchill. The track was not called Churchill Downs Racetrack until at least 1883, and not officially the name of the track until 1928. Clark patterned the Kentucky Derby after England’s Epsom Derby, a race for 3-year old Thoroughbreds at a distance of one mile and a half. The Derby distance was shortened to one mile and a quarter in 1896 and remains that distance today. After initial success, the track suffered financial hardship, and by 1894, the Louisville Jockey Club teetered towards bankruptcy. A new group bought the property, calling themselves the New Louisville Jockey Club.

    American Pharoah From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia American Pharoah (foaled February 2, 2012) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the American Triple Crown in 2015. He is bred and owned by Ahmed Zayat of Zayat Stables, LLC, trained by Bob Baffert American Pharoah and ridden in most of his races by Victor Espinoza. He is the first American Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 and only the twelfth in history. The American Triple Crown was won by American Pharoah in a wire-to-wire victory at the Belmont Stakes, following earlier victories at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. After running poorly in his track debut, he was undefeated thereafter. As a two-year-old, he won the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and FrontRunner Stakes, each by several lengths. An injury kept him out of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but the strength of his two wins nonetheless resulted in him being voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse at the 2014 Eclipse Awards. American Pharoah began his 2015 campaign with wins in the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby and went on to win both the 2015 Kentucky Derby and 2015 Preakness Stakes. Prior to the 2015 Belmont Stakes, Zayat announced that he had sold breeding rights to the colt to the Ashford Stud in Kentucky, a division of Ireland's Coolmore Stud. He retained control over the colt though, and his racing career which included an undisclosed dividend on stud fees. Zayat said he expected American Pharoah to retire from racing at the end of 2015.
