JOHN ASHBERY BIBLIOGRAPHY [2] John Ashbery was born in Rochester, New York, in 1927, he is well known as an art critic and poet. He is perhaps one of the best known Poets of the “New York School”. Ashbery graduated from Har- vard in 1947 where he wrote a study on his favourite poet Wallace Stevens. The poetry of Stevens has influenced Ashbery’s own poetry, however his poetry is characterized by originality in both his form of poems and their content. Ashbery received his B.A. degree in literature from Harvard in 1949 and moved to New York City where he was affiliated with poets Frank O’Hara, James Schuyler, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, and painters Jane Freilicher, Larry Rivers, Nell Blaine, and Fairfield Porter.Ash- bery’s writings also include several plays, novels and distinguished works of literary criticism, as well as numerous English translations of French literature. He has also enjoyed a distinguished career as an art critic for the Paris edition of the New York Herald Tribune and Newsweek, and as editor of Art News. He is an authority, in particular, on the work of the late American realist painter Fairfield Porter. In addition to all regular editions, there have been many privately printed, small press and fine art edi- tions, as well as volumes combining several titles. Ashbery as the charter of his own private consciousness is a more common interpretational trend, but views of Ashbery’s poetry that over-stress such “privacy” may neglect and misrepresent important themes and techniques that characterize his work. Rather than going the other way and simply ignoring those aspects of Ashbery’s poetry that lead to meditations on privately individual subjectivity (or even draw out labels of solipsism), my thesis interprets them as components of a broader struggle by Ashbery to develop his socially situated poetics. Building on contextual arguments about the social necessity of a reformulated avant-garde amid the homophobia of the McCarthy era, my thesis interprets the concerns initiated in Ashbery’s life and poetry during that time as gestating into broader examinations of the social realm and subjectivity (specifically its potential to approach either solipsism or intersubjective connection). -

Publisher’s mock-up for Ashbery’s first book, the composition designed and supervised by Nell Blaine at the Michael Press, and printed by the Ram Press. The present mock-up bears the printer’s notes as well as notes by Blaine regarding fonts, type size, paper stock, etc. etc.; a sample swatch of the decorated wrappers used for the binding is stapled to the upper left corner of the first page, which bears a paste-up of a title-page, with the title differing in size from the published version; pages of printed text and two of the illustrations reproduced in the book are pasted in. Of particular note are two original graphite sketches of the linocuts that were also included in the book, the drawings almost certainly by Nell Blaine, according to the attribution in the catalogue of the Tibor de Nagy 60th Anniversary Exhibition (N. Y.: Tibor de Nagy Gallery, 2012), in which this mock-up was featured. The colophon, which shows various revisions, is in manuscript on the recto of the last leaf of the mock-up. -

John Ashbery and Surrealism David Spittle Submitted for Doctor of Philosophy Newcastle University School of English Literature, Language & Linguistics April 2016 Page Left Intentionally Blank ii Abstract This thesis will demonstrate that an engagement with Surrealism alongside John Ashbery’s poetry can provide a mutually beneficial discussion through which to further understand both. Through its phenomenological attention, Ashbery’s poetry configures the everyday experience of his reality in a way that responds to, and invites, a surrealist perspective. The first chapter explores Joseph Cornell, collecting and the ‘found object’, with an emphasis on Ashbery’s first collection, Some Trees (1956). The second Chapter examines dreams and dreaming throughout Ashbery’s first four collections, ending with an analysis of Three Poems (1972). Merleau-Ponty is used to demonstrate the oneiric implications of Ashbery’s poetics of phenomenology as a basis for Surrealism, whereby a perception of reality becomes comparable to a dream. My third chapter presents Ashbery’s book-length poem Flow Chart (1991) alongside the Canadian filmmaker, Guy Maddin. The concept of noise, alongside the pioneering presence of Surrealism in early radio, is used to understand treatments of memory that connect Maddin’s films to Ashbery’s interruptive poetics and lead both to be understood through Georges Bataille’s notion of ‘The Labyrinth’. The fourth chapter discusses the relationship between visual perspective and a surrealist imagining of childhood. This chapter returns to the enduring importance of ‘The Skaters’ in order to understand the poem’s relation to collage, ‘play’ and metaphor as key examples of how Ashbery’s poetry comes to realise Breton’s surrealist dictum: ‘always for the first time’. -

Deposit Guide Contact: email Chinese Whispers Chinese Rooms: The Poetry of John Ashbery and Cognitive Studies William Kherbek Birkbeck University of London Submitted for Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 1 Abstract This thesis examines the relationship of John Ashbery’s poetry to developments in cognitive studies over the course of the last sixty years, particularly the science of linguistics as viewed from a Chomskyan perspective. The thesis is divided into four chapters which position particular topics in cognitive studies as organising principles for examining Ashbery’s poetry. The first chapter concentrates on developments in syntactic theory in relation to Ashbery’s experiments with poetic syntax. The second chapter examines the notion of “intention” and “intentionality” in Ashbery’s writing from the perspective of cognitive “theory of context” writing, particularly the work of Deirdre Wilson and Daniel Sperber. The final two chapters consider cognitive questions using Ashbery’s poetry as a means of entry into controversial areas in formal cognitive studies. The third chapter examines his poetry in relation to temporality, suggesting that Ashbery’s experiments with time form “theories of consciousness” as they consciously manipulate readerly consciousness and attention. -
