  • A Statement from U Sports in Support of the Canadian Football League's Cfl
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A STATEMENT FROM U SPORTS IN SUPPORT OF THE CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE’S CFL 2.0 STRATEGY January 25, 2019 TORONTO – U SPORTS President and Chief Executive Officer, Graham Brown has released the following statement: “On behalf of U SPORTS our 56 Member Institutions and four Conferences we want to publicly endorse the Canadian Football League’s strategy for growth, sometimes described as CFL 2.0. In recent meetings, Commissioner Ambrosie has told us the CFL wants to leverage its plan to help strengthen U SPORTS football. The CFL wants to increase its talent pool and create new markets for its product by forming partnerships with football leagues in the more than 40 countries beyond the U.S. and Canada that play gridiron football. We believe a stronger, more prosperous CFL can only mean better opportunities for our athletes who aspire to play in the CFL. The CFL wants to create new pathways for Canadian football players to play in Mexico or abroad when their U SPORTS or Junior Football careers are over. We are excited by the prospect of our athletes being able to continue to play the game they love, just like those in other sports such as hockey and basketball. It will give some of them an opportunity to grow and develop and return to play in the CFL. It will give many more the chance to experience new countries and cultures as they pursue their futures. The CFL wants to encourage more foreign players to enroll and play football in Canadian universities. We believe that could mean an infusion of international students in our classrooms and talent in our football programs.

  • Dear Sir Or Madam, the Fort Bend Gridiron Football League
Dear Sir or Madam, The Fort Bend Gridiron Football League has been a part of our local communities for over 10 years, with a single mindset of “Building Character and Community Through Youth Football" and providing athletes with a “Smarter, Safer Way to Play.” When Bucky and Tracey Richardson started our league a decade ago, they created an organization with the mentality that all children in our communities desiring to play youth football should have the opportunity, and through their involvement, we could help provide the youth of our community with the necessary tools for them to become successful young adults. A lot of excitement regarding our league exists within Fort Bend County. We believe it is primarily because of how we differ from other youth sports organizations. The key differences of our league are that it is a zoned youth football league, where the team on which you play, is the same as the high school to which you are zoned, and the fact that it is our unique culture to support the local high school football teams and booster clubs within our communities. Often, the same kids will go on to play for their middle school and eventually high schools. The league strives to align its goals and mission with the local school district wherever possible, creating and building a “small town” feel where kids grow up wanting to become a future Panther, Longhorn, Ranger, Falcon or Charger and play under the lights on Friday night. Our organization believes that kids going to school together should be playing football together and building a trust and friendship that play a key role in building a community.

Bunk, “Football in the United States before Codification and what it can tell us about the ‘Origins Debate’” in The Early Development of Football: Contemporary Debates Graham Curry, ed. (London: Routledge, 2019). Throughout the first half of the nineteenth century, football in the United States was an established pastime for children and had also been popular at schools and colleges. In certain circumstances adult men outside of the schools played the sport, using football as means of confirming social bonds centered on educational experience, occupation, ethnic identity or military service. Generally, these types of matches fall into four categories although there was often considerable overlap between them: First, nostalgia football played as a way of recalling schooldays or childhoods. Second, holiday football, a popular version of mob football generally played on special occasions or as part of ethnic festivals.

  • How Rugby Makes Better Football Players (This First Appeared in Gridiron Coach Magazine)
How Rugby Makes Better Football Players (This First Appeared in Gridiron Coach Magazine) By Alex Goff (www.goffonrugby.com) Your High School season is over. Your players are already making plans to play other sports during the winter and the spring. What should they play? In the spring, especially, football coaches find themselves at odds with their players’ choices. But what if your players could play a sport that not only keeps them in shape for football, but actually makes them better football players? The sports is out there, it’s called rugby, and strangely enough some football coaches won’t let their athletes play the game. High-school age rugby is played throughout the USA, culminating in a national championship tournament in late May. The game itself is an ancestor of football, and is similar to a no-huddle, wishbone gridiron game with all two-way players. Forward passing is not allowed, so the ball must be advanced by hard running and intricate lateral passing. After a tackle, play continues as teams for essentially a compacted line of scrimmage and try to drive each other off the ball. Players and football coaches who have been involved in both sports agree that playing rugby can make for better football players, and more dedicated athletes. The improvement in fitness, hand-eye coordination, and tackling technique after a season of rugby is phenomenal," said Mark Bullock, who served as head football coach and head rugby coach for Kentwood High School in Kent, Washington before becoming the USA Under-19 rugby coach. "I always recommended my football players to play rugby is they weren’t playing a spring sport.

  • Australian and American Football: a Comparison in Principles
1 Keith McManimen April 17, 2002 Australian and American Football: A Comparison in Principles Introduction: Football is considered by many to be the most demanding collision sport. However, the term football can be used to describe a wide variety of sports throughout the world. For example, football played in the United States is much different than football played in most European and South American countries, a sport American’s have termed soccer. Soccer, however, would not be considered a collision sport by most Americans. Australia is the only other country in the world that plays a version of football much different than soccer. Even though football in the United States and football in Australia are both collision sports, the sports differ greatly. The first disparity is in the rules and structure of the two sports. The second major difference is in the inner workings of the two sports, as in management, salary caps, disciplinary actions, etc. The third difference lies in the way the two sports interact with their fans and how they influence the culture of their countries. The AFL, through its presentation, is much more involved with and more appreciative of its fans, unlike that of the NFL, which puts money and player support above support of its fans. Australian football (footy) bases itself on principles that put the fan first, whereas American football (NFL) is focused on making money rather than supporting the wishes of its fans. 2 Technical Differences: Rules and Regulations There are many major differences between Australian Football and American Football. First, American Football is played on a 100-yard by 45-yard rectangular field.
