  • Comprehensive Report on the Activities of the President of the Osce Parliamentary Assembly
COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE OSCE PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY H.E. Mr. George Tsereteli (November 2017 – December 2020) February 2021 Upon assuming the office of President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in November 2017, I have strived to highlight several priorities, which include redoubling our conflict resolution efforts, ensuring that the OSCE is fully equipped to address new challenges, and promoting our common values and principles. Throughout my presidency, I have greatly appreciated the level of support I have received from Members of the Assembly and the Secretariat in both Copenhagen and Vienna. This has been crucial to pursue an ambitious agenda to meet our most pressing challenges such as addressing conflicts, radicalization and terrorism, and migration, implementing our human right commitments, striving to achieve gender equality, fostering economic co-operation, expanding our international partnerships, and reforming the OSCE PA to make our work more impactful. Detailed information on my work as President between November 2017 and December 2020 is listed in this report. In addition to these primary activities, I have also made numerous statements when the PA voice needed to be heard. In addition, I have met on several occasions with Heads of OSCE institutions to improve co-ordination at headquarters and in the field and ensure that our activities complement each other. I have also met with numerous PA delegations on the margins of my travels – and online – to ensure that all voices are heard and reflected in the work of our Parliamentary Assembly. I want to thank parliaments that have hosted my visits, but also particularly applaud and thank OSCE staff.

WHEC Update Briefing of worldwide activity of the Women’s Health and Education Center (WHEC) November 2020; Vol. 15. No. 11 Making A Difference Homelessness is one of the crudest manifestation of poverty, discrimination and inequality, affecting people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Globally, 1.6 billion people worldwide live in inadequate housing conditions, with about 15 million forcefully evicted every year, which has noted an alarming rise in homelessness in the last 10 years. Eradicating poverty is not only an ethical, but also a social, political and economic necessity. Placing people at the center of development by ensuring full participation by all is of utmost importance. Poor physical health is associated with poverty in general but seems to be more pronounced among those who are without homes. Individuals without homes often lack access to healthcare treatment. Chronic health problems and inaccessibility to medical and dental care can increase school absences and limit employment opportunities. People without home have higher rates of hospitalizations for physical illnesses, mental illness, and substance abuse than other population. Each year between 2 – 3 million people in the United States experience an episode of homelessness (HUD-US Departments of Housing and Urban Development). COVID-19 pandemic has made this situation worse. Homelessness is an issue that can affect anyone. The odds of an individual in the United States becoming homeless in a given year are 1 in 194. It is estimated 1% of population in developed countries – USA, Canada and EU countries are homeless and 10% of homeless people are under the age of 15.

  • WFP News Release EU Provides Emergency Cash Assistance and Nutrition Support to People Facing Extreme Food Insecurity in Zimbabw
WFP News Release 10 August 2021 EU provides emergency cash assistance and nutrition support to people facing extreme food insecurity in Zimbabwe Harare – The European Union has contributed EUR 3 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Zimbabwe. Funding will be used to support highly vulnerable people living in urban communities who are struggling to meet basic food needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The contribution, made through the EU’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Department (ECHO), will come in the form of cash assistance used to support beneficiaries of WFP’s Urban Social Assistance and Resilience Building Programme. Recipients will receive USD 12 per person, per month via either e-voucher or Western Union cash transfer – to help cover basic food needs such as maize meal, cooking oil and salt. “At the EU, we are committed to working with partners like WFP to bring life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations, most of whom are struggling to make ends meet in these challenging times,” said EU Ambassador Timo Olkkonen. “But our assistance can never cover all those in need, only sound public social policies and sustainable economic growth based on political and economic reforms can.” WFP Zimbabwe Country Director and Representative Francesca Erdelmann said the already dire food insecurity situation in urban and peri-urban areas has been further exacerbated by restrictive measures implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19. This has resulted in the loss of urban livelihoods and income. “Urban populations face high living costs to obtain basic food needs, along with other critical items such as rent, water and electricity.
