RESPONSIBLE SAFE RESPECTFUL Stage 5 Ag go to Shepparton!

On Thursday 7th November five members of Stage 5 Agriculture travelled to Shepparton with their scrap metal cow (Deborah) to participate in the Cows Create Careers Dairy Day. It was an adventure to take Deborah on a 400km journey with us, and we were relieved to find upon arrival that the only thing to fall off was her back right hoof, although her head had drooped to a depressing angle. She looked rather sad, but a bit of bright blue baling twine and wire soon perked her up and she absolutely shone in the Shepparton RSL. Thank you to Sally and Lily for the quick and effective repairs, and wheeling Deborah through the Shepparton RSL foyer (not for the faint hearted as her training wheels kept pulling to the right – wheel alignment?). WIN news were present, and a shot of Deborah started and ended the news segment – go Debs!! She deservedly stole the limelight. Welders Lachlan Fattore, Jordan Duffy and Clayton Longford did a great job. A big thank you goes to Mr Hughes for allowing us to use the Tech Room and equipment, and for fixing up some of the welding. We really appreciate it, this project wouldn’t have happened without your assistance. Also thank you to our farmer parents for providing the scrap metal. The Dairy Day proved to be very entertaining, with Laura dressing up as an inflatable cow pat, Giaan as a milk carton and Mrs Fattore had the honour of wearing the cow head in the teacher quiz round (so much better than the goat). Laura, Giaan and Dallas took out line honours in the Cow Pat Challenge, in the fastest time ever according to the organisers. Giaan sprinted tirelessly in the Calcium Challenge (right), doing a superb job despite the 10 toothbrushes hitting her in the face with every step. Ironically when she finished her teeth were no cleaner….

The award presentation concluded an action-packed morning. We were delighted to receive 2nd place in the Senior Category for the 2019 Cows Create Careers program. Other place getters were Grammar in 1st place, and Cobram Anglican Grammar 3rd place. It was a very proud moment to place amongst the Grammar schools, well done Stage 5 Ag!

Alas, the long day took its toll on Deborah and she lost her head at . We will endeavour to undertake a head reattachment and she will start her new role as the CCS Education Support Cow in the very near future. Meanwhile our lovely calves Gavin and Jonah are now weaned and weight 130kg each. They will be off shortly to the feed lot to eat away to their heart’s content (without neurotic sheep stealing their feed and chasing them). They have been lovely, gentle calves to have at school and it will be sad to see them go.
