DIDIER AARON Paintings × Drawings × Sculpture JACQUES STELLA (Lyon 1596 – 1657 Paris) The Virgin and Child with Saints Francis and John the Baptist Oil on marble 38.2 x 42.6 cm. PROVENANCE: Sale Joseph Artaud, Paris, 15 November 1791, lot 90; Sotheby's, New York, 28 January 1999, lot 403; Private collection, East Coast, USA. Son of François Stellaert (1563-1605), a painter of Flemish origin working in Rome from 1576 who then settled in Lyon, Jacques Stella was born in 1596. Around 1619, he left for Florence where he worked for Cosimo II de’ Medici and probably met Nicolas Poussin and Jacques Callot. He left Florence for Rome between 1622 and 1623, where he formed a close friendship with Poussin. Stella became famous among Italian collectors with his small paintings on precious supports such as marble, agate, lapis and slate, as well as with his engravings and drawings. He worked on a series of 45 drawings illustrating the life of Saint Philippe Neri for the Jesuits. In 1634, he received a commission from the king of Spain, and left Rome with the retinue of Maréchal de Créqui, French ambassador in Rome. He passed through Venice, stayed in Lyon in 1635 and then went to Paris. Persuaded to stay by Richelieu, who took him into his service, he settled in the capital; there he benefited from lodging at the Louvre and a considerable grant. Later he was decorated with the order of Saint-Michel, which was a rare and great honour for an artist. At this period, Stella received many important commissions from Cardinal Richelieu for his château, Indre-et-Loire (Liberality of Titus, Cambridge, Fogg Art Museum). -

Chiaroscuro In the series of books titled The Art of Drawing published by Search Press, Giovanni Civardi’s Drawing Light & Shade: Understanding Chiaroscuro discusses the application of this technique. Civardi says that “[c]hiaroscuro generally refers to the graduating tones, from light to dark, in a work of art, and the artist’s skill in using this technique to represent volume and mood” (Civardi, p. 3). Essentially, artists use chiaroscuro to show the contrast between light and dark areas in a composition “to suggest form in relation to a light source” (p. 3). The term chiaroscuro originated during the European Renaissance and artists developed the technique in various ways such as through composition, mood, and to show volume (p. 3; Harvard Art Museum glossary). For instance, chiaroscuro can be found in different kinds of art forms that include drawing, woodcuts, painting, photography, and in cinema (Hall; Landau and Parshall; Civardi). Within a compositional sense, Geertgen tot Sint Jans’s Nativity at Night (1490) is an example of establishing light sources within a painting (Earls; Hall). Ugo da Carpi, Giovanni Baglione, and Caravaggio developed the use of an unseen light source as part of the composition in their work (Earls; Hall). Caravaggio is accredited with developing the style which became known as tenebrism. This particular style stresses the intense contrast between light and dark where darkness is in prominence (Fichner-Rathus; Buser). In drawing and sketching, artists use pencil, charcoal, paint, ink, or a computer to create the effect of volume by establishing one or more light sources. In Drawing Light & Shade: Understanding Chiaroscuro, Civardi effectively explains form and cast shadow with a light source, the penumbra line “around the outer edge of the cast shadow [where] the darkness is less intense,” the shadow line, form shadow, the penumbra, cast shadow, and shadow line from the shadow cast by the object onto a surrounding surface (Civardi, pp. -

The New York show, “Valentin de Boulogne: Beyond Caravaggio,” concentrated its attention on the French immigrant to Rome who became one of Caravaggio’s most important artistic successors. The Symbolism of blood in two masterpieces of the early Italian Baroque art Angelo Lo Conte Throughout history, blood has been associated with countless meanings, encompassing life and death, power and pride, love and hate, fear and sacrifice. In the early Baroque, thanks to the realistic mi of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, blood was transformed into a new medium, whose powerful symbolism demolished the conformed traditions of Mannerism, leading art into a new expressive era. Bearer of macabre premonitions, blood is the exclamation mark in two of the most outstanding masterpieces of the early Italian Seicento: Caravaggio's Beheading a/the Baptist (1608)' (fig. 1) and Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith beheading Halo/ernes (1611-12)2 (fig. 2), in which two emblematic events of the Christian tradition are interpreted as a representation of personal memories and fears, generating a powerful spiral of emotions which constantly swirls between fiction and reality. Through this paper I propose that both Caravaggio and Aliemisia adopted blood as a symbolic representation of their own life-stories, understanding it as a vehicle to express intense emotions of fear and revenge. Seen under this perspective, the red fluid results as a powerful and dramatic weapon used to shock the viewer and, at the same time, express an intimate and anguished condition of pain. The Council of Europe is a key player in the fight to respect THE REPRESENTATION OF ROMA the rights and equal treatment of Roma and Travellers. As such, it implements various actions aimed at combating IN MAJOR EUROPEAN discrimination: facilitating the access of Roma and Travellers to public services and justice; giving visibility to their history, MUSEUM COLLECTIONS culture and languages; and ensuring their participation in the different levels of decision making. Another aspect of the Council of Europe’s work is to improve the wider public’s understanding of the Roma and their place in Europe. Knowing and understanding Roma and Travellers, their customs, their professions, their history, their migration and the laws affecting them are indispensable elements for interpreting the situation of Roma and Travellers today and understanding the discrimination they face. This publication focuses on what the works exhibited at the Louvre Museum tell us about the place and perception of Roma in Europe from the15th to the 19th centuries. 1 Attavio Leoni Self Portrait ARTISTS' PORTRAITS & SELF PORTRAITS Selected from the Permanent Collection Auckland City Art Gallery 4 August ~ 2 September 1979 • INTRODUCTION Portrait painting, along with religious painting, 'history' painting and, more recently landscape painting, has always been a major pre occupation of artists. For many artists the painting of formal portraits or portrait groups on commission was their 'bread and butter', whatever their own interests, but the special talents and training required for the successful delineation of the human features tended to make artists specialise, and the great portrait artists of all periods and places have tended to be portrait painters pure and simple. One has only to think, in England for instance, of Gainsborough, Reynolds and Lawrence. Formal portraiture, however, though making reputations and fortunes for many of its practitioners, is only one aspect of portraiture. Of equally ancient tradition, and perhaps wider practice among artists, are the self portrait, the mutual portrait of artist by artist, and the informal family sketch. Here we come most immediately in contact with the artist himself and with those persons for whom he held the closest regard. The barriers of formality behind which the subject hides in the commissioned portrait are no longer present and the artist sees, or is seen, with the penetrating vision of intimacy. This exhibition, drawn entirely from the resources of our own rermanent Collection, is of such intimate portraits. Among the artists represented are many whom we do not normalYy connect with portraiture and among the works shown are many in media, particularly in print media, not normally associated with the artists in question. -

Under the rule of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, the period saw a dramatic increase in French political and military power, the maturation of French courtly life at Versailles, and an unparalleled flourishing of the arts. Poussin, Claude, and French Drawing in the Classical Age, a new exhibition opening at the Morgan Library & Museum on June 16, explores the work of some of the most celebrated artists of the time. More than fifty drawings largely from the Morgan’s collections—including works by Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Jacques Callot, and Charles Le Brun—will be on view. Together they demonstrate the era’s distinctive approach to composition and subject matter, informed by principles of rationalism, respect for the art of classical antiquity, and by a belief in a natural world governed by divine order. Tyler, PhD, DSc Supplemental content IMPORTANCE Strabismus is a binocular vision disorder characterized by the partial or complete inability to maintain eye alignment on the object that is the target of fixation, usually accompanied by suppression of the deviating eye and consequent 2-dimensional monocular vision. This cue has been used to infer the presence of strabismus in a substantial number of famous artists. OBJECTIVE To provide evidence that Leonardo da Vinci had strabismus. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In exotropia, the divergent eye alignment is typically manifested as an outward shift in the locations of the pupils within the eyelid aperture. The condition was assessed by fitting circles and ellipses to the pupils, irises, and eyelid apertures images identified as portraits of Leonardo da Vinci and measuring their relative positions. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Geometric angle of alignment of depicted eyes. RESULTS This study assesses 6 candidate images, including 2 sculptures, 2 oil paintings, and 2 drawings. The mean relative alignments of the pupils in the eyelid apertures (where divergence is indicated by negative numbers) showed estimates of −13.2° in David,−8.6° in Salvator Mundi,−9.1° in Young John the Baptist,−12.5° in Young Warrior, 5.9° in Vitruvian Man, and −8.3° in an elderly self-portrait. These findings are consistent with exotropia (t5 = 2.69; P = .04, 2-tailed). As Protestantism expanded throughout the entire Europe, the Catholic Church was seeking artistic methods to reattract believers. Being the precursor of Counter-Reformation art, Caravaggio incorporated tenebrism in his paintings. Art historians mostly correlate the use of tenebrism with religion, but there have also been scholars proposing how tenebrism reflects a unique naturalism that only belongs to Caravaggio. The paper will thus start with the introduction of tenebrism, discuss the two major uses of this artistic technique and will finally discuss Caravaggio’s legacy until today. Despite the fact that Galileo's discovery in astronomy, the Tulip bulb craze in Amsterdam, the diplomatic artworks by Peter Paul Rubens, the music by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Mercantilist economic theories of Colbert, the Absolutism in France are all fascinating, this paper will focus on the sophisticated and dramatic production of Catholic art during the Counter-Reformation ("Baroque Art and Architecture," n.d.). -
Antoinette Bouzonnet Stella's Entrance of the Emperor Sigismund
Exhibition Reviews 269 Pomp & Power: Antoinette Bouzonnet Stella’s Entrance of the Emperor Sigismund into Mantua, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, February 5–August 22, 2010. The exhibit, “Pomp and Power: Antoinette Bouzonnet Stella’s Entrance of the Emperor Sigismund into Mantua,” after Giulio Romano’s design for the Sala degli Stucchi in the Palazzo del Te in Mantua, presents an accom- plished set of twenty-five numbered engravings, first published in 1675 for Jean-Baptiste Colbert (minister and chief counselor to Louis XIV).1 Although Antoinette Bouzonnet Stella (1641–1676)2 was among the small group of women engravers Ann Sutherland Harris identified as deserving further serious study in the catalogue for the Harris-Nochlin 1976 Los Angeles County Museum exhibit,3 she remained, until this exhibition, vir- tually unknown outside the archives.4 The youngest daughter of Etienne Bouzonnet and Madeleine Stella, sister of the painter Jacques Stella (1596– 1657), Antoinette is recognized primarily for three sets of engravings, of which the one represented in this exhibition is the most widely cited. While notice of her work is slowly beginning to appear in the literature,5 more than thirty years after Harris-Nochlin, the NMWA exhibit is the first to present a substantial body of work by this remarkably accomplished French artist, and is itself, therefore, a most welcome adventus. While those familiar with Diana Scultori’s Roman engravings may find themselves on familiar turf, some visitors to the museum might think the martial subject matter of the engravings an odd choice for a woman art- ist, since exhibitions of works by early modern women artists more often focus on portraits, genre studies, floral arrangements, and still lifes, with the occasional devotional, religious study, or pastoral.6 It is, then, not alto- gether unexpected that details related to the conventions of ancient Roman campaigns and triumphs, rather than to the accomplishments of the art- ist, become the focus of the exhibition captions. -
