8 PM MONDAY IANUARY 30, 1995 STRAFFORDROOM MEMORIAL UNION BI'ILDINC PETERAPPLEYARD QUINTET "iazz" One of the more salutary adiectivesmodifying the noun is "celebratory,"and this quality in particularly compellingwhen our attentionis otherwisedrawn to the troubles of the world and natiory the solution of which we may little influence. So what do we celebrate? That one of the mysteriesof humankind is the capacity of somebeings to turn soundsinto affirmationwhich lifts the spirit, and that we constantly can be refreshedand energizedby visits from artists both familiar and unfamiliar to us who give eloquenttestimony to this blessing. When Peter Appleyard first appearedon our seriesin March of 1992he introduced us to Jay Leonhart and JohnBunch, as well as reacquaintingus with DennisMackrel. Tonight the wide range of his musical contactsresults in a totally new configuratiorybringing Rick Wilkins,Bill Mayq and LynnSeaton here for thefirst time, and reminding us that one of the best drummers in the world lives iust down the road, so to speak.

Peterhas long beenrecognized as one of Canada'soutstanding musicians and pre-NAFTA exportsto the world at large. Born in Englandin 1928he first developed asa drummer. Enrouteto a two-yeargig in Bermudain 1950he encounteredLionel Hampton in New York and an earlierinterest in the vibeswas rekindled to the point of immediatepurchase (!) Soonafter his emigrationto Torontoin 1951he met our dear friend , and his fate was sealed. His performing orbit has embraced both the Todayand TonightShows, and ,Count Basieand Stan Kenton. and Buddy DeFranco; perhaps his strongest identification is with BennyGoodman with whom he concer-tizedfrom 1972to 1980. And he is a gentlemanof boundlessenthusiasm and endlessgoodwill, there being none better to set the tone (no pun intended)for a new semester.

Versatilityis the watchwordfor Petelsassociates in tonight'sventure; music maiors take notice. His compatriotRick Wilkins is a composer, arranger, conducts for, and performs with numerous marorartists in jazz, studio, and symphonic seftings;for example, he has done scoresfor ,been music director for Arure Murrap appearedas soloistwith the Toronto ChamberOrchestra, and preparedthe music for the openingsof both the CalgaryWinter Olympicsand Toronto'sSkydome!

Beforemoving to New York, Bill Mays worked the Hollywood studios for over a decade, being heard on such soundtracksas laws,RoclE, and Sleqlessin Setttle. He has been music director for SarahVaughan, and accompanistfor or sidemanwith a virhally endlesslist of luminaries;names like PeggSrLee, Frank Sinaha,Mel Lewis, and stand out - as doesClark Terry! Among multitudinous other things,he hasananged for WoodyHerman, composed chamber music, and appeared on Marian McPardand'sPiano lazz on National Public Radio. (Write your congressman!) PETER APPLEYARD QUINTET

Lynn Seatonwas at the University of Oklahoma preparing for a careerin dentistry when the musicallightning struck; its force and luminosity led him to stints with the and Count Basiebands, and Tony Bennett. He has had an NEA grant to study with Rufus Reid (write your congressman!),taught at the CincinnatiConservatory and absorH the continuity of the tradition.with immediacy through performanceexperiences ranging from Buck Clayton to Thad Jones.

Finally, we need only to note that Alan Dawson is no sbanger to our environs; he performedon the secondconcert in this seriesin the fall of 1979,with Hank Joneslast year, and numerous times in between;he is one of the most respectd drummers, teachers, and personson the planet, and has been clearly recognizedalong with Harvard and FenwayPark as among the beasureswhich define the quality of life in greater Boston.

Jazz is about spontaneousand honest interaction based on mutual respect and collectiveexperience; this we can in fact celebrate, enioy, and perhapsfrom it leam. THE SERIES
