Required Occasional Observances No required occasional observances, but some Humanists (especially those who characterize themselves as Religious Humanists) celebrate life-cycle events with baby naming, coming of age, and marriage ceremonies as well as memorial services. Even though there are no required observances, there are several days throughout the calendar year that many Humanists consider holidays. They include (but are not limited to) the following: February 12. Darwin Day: This marks the birthday of Charles Darwin, whose research and findings in the field of biology, particularly his theory of evolution by natural selection, represent a breakthrough in human knowledge that Humanists celebrate. First Thursday in May. National Day of Reason: This day acknowledges the importance of reason, as opposed to blind faith, as the best method for determining valid conclusions. June 21 - Summer Solstice. This day is also known as World Humanist Day and is a celebration of the longest day of the year.

Nature of the Case and Statement of Facts1 Plaintiffs, the American Humanist Association (“AHA”) and Kwame Teague, challenge the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s (“NCDPS”) disparate treatment of Humanists, and specifically, its refusal to allow Humanists to meet in groups to study and discuss their shared convictions while authorizing such group meetings for other faith groups of equal or smaller size, as violative of the Establishment and Equal Protection Clauses. NCDPS maintains a list of approved faith groups (“Faith Groups”) and provides them with time, space, and other resources. (A.64-70, 77-81, 1268). Only recognized Faith Groups are authorized to meet in groups for study and worship. (A.69, 1268). NCDPS tracks religious preferences in OPUS but only for approved Faith Groups. (A.3-35, 1292). NCDPS has approved several new Faith Groups since 2010, including one with only three inmates. (A.4, 183, 903, 1260). NCDPS concedes that approving Humanism would impose no threat to the security, control, operation and safety of a correctional institution. (A.925). Indeed, the federal government treats Humanism as a religious group.2 The Bureau of Prisons (“BOP”) approved Humanism as a faith group and allots the group two time-slots each week for “worship” and for “study.” (A.825-29, 833-39, 1075-76, 1081).

Festin, SVD Christ the King Mission Seminary-Quezon City Preliminary Remarks: The Ethical Question of Extra-Judicial Killing(s) In a stimulating essay entitled “Why President Duterte Could be Correct [sic],” Bro. Romualdo Abulad, SVD expatiates on one burning political and moral issue currently raging in contemporary Philippine history.1 The main burden of Abulad’s short treatise revolves around the intriguing philosophical-ethical question whether the specter of extra-judicial killings (hereafter EJKs) allegedly being perpetrated by Duterte’s government in its brutal campaign on illegal drugs can be morally justified or philosophically defended. Abulad—a star professor who teaches philosophy at Christ the King Mission Seminary and the University of Sto. Tomás (UST)—is arguably styled as “the most prominent Kantian scholar” in this unhappy land of ours.2 Indeed, his philosophical thoughts and locutions are unquestionably carved from the frozen cube of Kantianism. For Abulad, Immanuel Kant is to philosophy what Magnus Carlsen is to chess—the supreme virtuoso of metaphysical lucubration, the finest connoisseur of what Plato once wistfully described as that “dear delight,” the feast of the gods (philosophy). The fascination of Abulad’s treatise chiefly owes itself to the uncanny way in which he unfolds his thesis and builds up his arguments. He does not bare the body of his unspoken assumptions in a direct and pointed manner. (The title of his essay which is framed as a rhetorical question bears out this 62 R. Gora joins Ananda College, Colombo as a Lecturer. 1927 Saraswathi joins Gora on September 26, defying the taboo that pregnant women should not see eclipse and views the solar eclipse in Colombo. Saraswathi views lunar eclipse at Vijayanagaram, Andhra Pradesh. September: Gora joins his alma mater P.R. College, Kakinada as Lecturer and Head. Gora removes his so-called sacred thread which is a caste symbol and has differences with his father on this. 1928 Eldest daughter Manorama (b. July 29) without any deformity even after Saraswathi views the eclipse. Gora is ex-communicated from his caste. Saraswathi Gora follows him.

    Facebook, fickleness, and the new populism in the Philippines Assessing Facebook’s role in Rodrigo Duterte’s 2016 presidential campaign and rise to power By Steve Ellmers A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of International Communication Unitec Institute of Technology, 2018 Abstract Although the Philippines’ populist strongman Rodrigo Duterte is often called the Trump of the East his unexpected victory in the 2016 Philippine presidential election has created such a bloody legacy that Duterte’s impact may even outlast his namesake’s. Duterte’s rise to power occurred in the country with the world’s heaviest Facebook users and relied on this social media platform to a far greater extent than any candidate had during the 2010 Philippine presidential contest. This development determined that Facebook would be the main subject of this analysis. This research analyses what happened during the 2016 Philippine presidential election campaign by examining the role Facebook played in Duterte’s success from when his candidacy was formally approved on December 17, 2015, through to the presidential election on May 9, 2016. It subjects two key Facebook accounts, Duterte’s official page and a representative example of one of the hundreds created to support him, to content and discursive analysis. It places Team Duterte’s use of Facebook within the overall context of the campaign and shows how Duterte’s complex and contradictory identity as a candidate was constructed for two very different Facebook audiences. This research also considers how Duterte’s rise was linked to the assistance he received – either intentionally or otherwise – from other members of the Philippine political and media elite.

Held in partnership with the Faith & Belief Forum and Humanists UK, this conference was originally due to take place over two days at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Due to pandemic restrictions we took our discussions online, via Zoom, using Q&A sessions and virtual breakout rooms to facilitate open group discussion. We hosted four sessions over the course of a fortnight, involving a diverse delegation of participants, representing a range of ages and faith and non-faith backgrounds, from across the UK.
