MONTEBELLO REPORTER MAY 2021 Schools 15 ROTARY HOLD ANNUAL ESSAY CONTEST IN HONOR OF GEORGE R. HENSEL Although the COVID19 pandemic restrictions continue to keep the Montebello Rotary Club from meeting in-person, the club has not skipped-a-beat and continues to meet weekly via Zoom and press forward with its goals and mission state- ments. Some of those goals are being of service to others, advancing understanding, peace and goodwill, as well as promoting integrity. As for its specific goal of promoting integrity, the Montebello Rotary Club once again hosted its annual George R. Hensel Ethics Essay Contest for local High Students.

George R. Hensel was a Garfield High School graduate and a long time Montebello resident, businessman and philanthro- pist. In 1953, he established the California Driving School and later became known as the “Godfather” of the industry. He also became a successful real estate entrepreneur. As he progressed in life, he always remembered to support charitable causes he believed in. George was also a fine Rotarian with 45 years of perfect attendance, with an impressive record of philanthropy; much of it here in the . Besides having been a major donor to the Rotary Foundation, he has been honored by the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, Beverly Hospital, and the City of Montebello, which named a street and the community pool after him.

In a contest established by Mr. Hensel, every year Montebello Rotary Club asks our local High School students to write an essay designed to challenge and help them analyze ethical issues and concerns confronting them in today’s complex world. The winner at the local Montebello Club level advances to the District Level and four winners at that level are award- ed monetary prizes. The winner at the District Level gets $3,000 plus $1,000 for his/her teacher and the overall winning essay is presented at the District Conference.

This year Montebello Rotary Club had about sixty local high school students submit their essays about an ethical dilemma they’ve faced in their relatively young lives’, how they faced it, and what they learned from it. Out of those essays submitted, the Montebello Rotary Club is pleased to announce that high-school student Sandy Membreno, of Applied Technology Center, is the local level winner, and will go on to represent our community at the District level. Additionally, the two runners-up are , students Alyssa Lopez and Pauline Flores. Both Alyssa and Pauline were awarded $200 each and made MHS and their teacher Lisa Quemada proud. Sandy was awarded $300, along with an additional $100 awarded to her sponsoring teacher, Lauren Heacock.

Congratulations Sandy, good luck on the next level of competition; and congratulations to Sandy, Alyssa, and Pauline, and all the students partaking in the contest this year. We’ll be collectively rooting for all of our students’ future educational aspirations and goals.

AMAZING AWANA FISHING AT LEGG LAKE

El Monte’s Famous Legg Lake is where the Truth ‘n’ Training 3rd-4th grade Awana boys decided to hold their fishing trip. Mealworms & earthworms were supplied to the boys, as well as fishing rods and weights. One boy, who preferred to go anonymous, caught a panfish. Another boy in kindergarten, who was invited to the fishing trip, claimed a large fish live in the lake who would eventually steal his hooks.

Of course, in the book of Job, we see a sea creature called Leviathan, which is possibly a crocodile, but who can be sure of such things? It was great to see happy and smiling faces on the young men, who I believe will grow to become some of the greatest anglers you will ever see! Watch out, tuna!

HAPPY EASTER FROM THE AWANA CLUB

The Awana club held their incredible and funtacular Easter egg hunt and mini golf course right in the churchyard! They had the game where you hold an egg on a spoon, a potato sack race, and an Easter egg hunt after golfing.

Coupons were given out for Golf ‘n’ Stuff, and one of the mini golf courses at the church included a water gun that would spray kids. Hot dogs were served along with lemonade. All the kids had a good time and God like to see that.

BEEP BEEP! AWANA GRAND PRIX

Also, the Awana club held a grand prix; the Pinewood Derby, in which contestants would build and race wooden cars.

Currently, at the time of this writing, contestants are building and testing their cars. The Pinewood Derby occurs next month, so stay tuned to our paper to learn more about this exciting event!
