Notice that you are playing two notes at a time throughout the entire riff. Notice also that they are octaves! That's what gives bobby that funky sound in the tune. Oh and for those of you who say that Bobby plays a different part on "Mars Hotel"? Seriously though, Bobby started gravitating towards this really cool, funky part around the time they started coupling this song with Fire in early '77. Now even though these are octaves, play them as if the were chords, with a lot of varying of the slides and funky strums. Learn that riff verbatim, but be prepared, once you know it, to improvise around it. Bobby also had a way of playing it a bit on the sloppy side. not that he couldn’t play it clean, he was perfectly capable of doing so. It just gave the song a funky kind of feel and off set the more simplistic Jerry rhythm's and leads when Bobby played it "sloppy". Oh and when playing these octaves, try your best to mute the other strings, only strumming (well as much as you can at least) the two note octaves throughout the riff and song. In some of the other parts of the tune, when he isn't playing this riff, or a variation he fit into the changes, Bobby just played chords and chord fragments. When playing the octaves with the lows on the bass strings (In this case the E and the A strings) use your 1st and third fingers to fret the two note octave intervals. When you play the ones that have their law end on the G and the D string use your 1st finger (pointer)

    Conversations with Steve Kimock and Billy Goodman by Frank Goodman (5/2008, Puremusic.com) Call it nepotism, nostalgia, call it near-sightedness, but it's really none of the above. When guitar icon Steve Kimock and his old bandmate (my brother) and expatriate songwriter/slide wonder Billy Goodman reunite for a record in the barn and a CA tour, it's a very musical occasion. Billy had gone up the Kimock farm near Bethlehem PA (where we first encountered him in the '70s) looking to do a little playing with Steve's drummer son Johnny and his uppo Peter Fritz on bass, and perhaps to record a few songs with Steve if he was around and available. One thing led to another. Billy's got a lot of push even on his best behavior, and Steve's got the inclination to play his guitar all hours of the day. Long story shorter, Bill camped out at the Circle K and when the smoke cleared (or not) there was a 10 song CD, an invite to join a SKF (Steve Kimock and Friends) tour on the West Coast, and a German duo tour in the offing (the last just a week from this writing.) Big Red Barn Sessions features the aforementioned rhythm section of Peter Fritz and John Morgan Kimock, as well as our old friend Jim Kost on B3. Billy's songs and vocals are front and center, along with a side of Kimock that his fans may have seen less of in recent years. He is a very strong "song" player, along with his well known improvisational prowess and flair for instrumental composition.

    !1 Grateful Dead Chord Anthology I hope you enjoy this compilation of the Grateful Dead’s Music. I attempted to collect pretty much all the Dead’s playable original music and the few covers that really became theirs. There certainly is some missing, but there are over 120 tunes old and new that have been included. I’ve tried to make all the songs easy to learn and memorize as well as easy to read whether you are on stage or at a campfire. Unlike many tab and chord sites, here each song has it’s own page. All verses in a song will be formatted in the same number of lines. Conventions like indenting choruses make it easy to both see the structure of the song and play the right chords at the right time. You’ll have to decide whether its easier to first memorize a chord progression so you can play it while reading the later verses, or to memorize the words so you can look back at the chord progressions. Hopefully you’ll get around to doing both and then you’ll truly own the song. The book certainly relies on your having heard these tunes previously and doesn’t attempt to provide transcripts or tabs of every lick and riff. YouTube probably provides the quickest way to refresh your memories if you are unsure of a part, and sites like RuKind.com and DeadStein.com provide more details on some of the riffs. If you know these details, this anthology will help you go from there to provide the lyrics and general song structure.

Biography The Grateful Dead were an American rock band that formed in 1965 in Northern California who came to fame as part of author Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, a series of multimedia happenings centered around then-legal LSD. Famed for their concerts, the band performed more than 2,300 shows over thirty years, disbanding after the death of lead guitarist Jerry Garcia in August 1995.
