Competing Generic Concepts for Blanding's, Pacific and European

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We review competing taxonomic classifications and hypotheses for the phylogeny of emydine turtles. The formerly rec- ognized genus Clemmys sensu lato clearly is paraphyletic. Two of its former species, now Glyptemys insculpta and G. muhlenbergii, constitute a well-supported basal clade within the Emydinae. However, the phylogenetic position of the oth- er two species traditionally placed in Clemmys remains controversial. Mitochondrial data suggest a clade embracing Actinemys (formerly Clemmys) marmorata, Emydoidea and Emys and as its sister either another clade (Clemmys guttata + Terrapene) or Terrapene alone. In contrast, nuclear genomic data yield conflicting results, depending on which genes are used. Either Clemmys guttata is revealed as sister to ((Emydoidea + Emys) + Actinemys) + Terrapene or Clemmys gut- tata is sister to Actinemys marmorata and these two species together are the sister group of (Emydoidea + Emys); Terra- pene appears then as sister to (Actinemys marmorata + Clemmys guttata) + (Emydoidea + Emys). The contradictory branching patterns depending from the selected loci are suggestive of lineage sorting problems. Ignoring the unclear phy- logenetic position of Actinemys marmorata, one recently proposed classification scheme placed Actinemys marmorata, Emydoidea blandingii, Emys orbicularis, and Emys trinacris in one genus (Emys), while another classification scheme treats Actinemys, Emydoidea, and Emys as distinct genera. -
Forest Harvesting in the Mountains of the Corredor and Montnegre Mid-Nineteenth Century
Boletín de la AsociaciónForest de harvesting Geógrafos in the Españoles mountains N.º of the 62 Corredor- 2013, págs.and Montnegre 477-482 mid-nineteenth century I.S.S.N.: 0212-9426 FOREST HARVESTING IN THE MOUNTAINS OF THE CORREDOR AND MONTNEGRE MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY Luis Urteaga Francesc Nadal Departament de Geografia Humana. Universitat de Barcelona [email protected], [email protected] I. INTRODUCTION The forests of the Corredor and Montnegre massifs, intensely exploited since the Middle Ages, were subjected to severe pressure in the eighteen hundreds. Among the causes for this intensification in the exploitation of forest resources were the increasing demand for timber for ship building, fuel consumption in glass kilns and other industrial activities, and the extension of the railway network in the north of the Maresme county, which revaluated forest resources in the zone by facilitating their extraction. Recent studies have identified the profound transformations in the landscape occurring in the Montnegre-Corredor zone in the 19th century. However, a large part of academic effort has been centred on long-term landscape evolution, relegating to a secondary plane the characterisation of the exploitations themselves and the specification of their economic importance. Our work places the emphasis on forest use, precisely in a crucial period for forest development: the middle years of the eighteen hundreds. The main sources for this work are the territorial tax statistics (amillaramientos) corresponding to 1852 and 1862, as well as the fiscal documentation connected with them: assessment cards, claim forms for damages due to the exceeding of quotas, and investigation files. As Indicators of Habitat Quality in Mediterranean Streams and Rivers in the Province of Barcelona (Catalonia, Iberian Peninsula)
International Journal of Odonatology, 2016 Vol. 19, No. 3, 107–124, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/13887890.2016.1172991 Dragonflies (Insecta: Odonata) as indicators of habitat quality in Mediterranean streams and rivers in the province of Barcelona (Catalonia, Iberian Peninsula) Ricard Martín∗ and Xavier Maynou Catalan Odonata Study Group, Institució Catalana d’Història Natural, Barcelona, Spain (Received 7 November 2015; final version received 24 March 2016) In a field study carried out in 2011 and 2014 adult dragonflies were identified as a rapid and easy-to-use means of assessing habitat quality and biological integrity of Mediterranean streams and rivers in the province of Barcelona (Region Catalonia, Iberian Peninsula). The study included sampling sites from five different river catchments: Besòs, Foix, Llobregat, Ter and Tordera. Multivariate statistical procedures and indicator species analysis were used to investigate the relationship between river ecological status, study sites and dragonfly species or species assemblages’ occurrence. The dragonfly association identified with western Mediterranean permanent streams, i.e. Cordulegaster boltonii, Boyeria irene, Onychogom- phus uncatus and Calopteryx virgo meridionalis, was found only at the sites with the highest status. All these taxa were identified as indicator species of sites with the best scores for the macroinvertebrate based IBMWP index and for the combined IASPT index, which reflects the sensitivity of the macroinvertebrate families present to environmental changes; besides, B. irene and C. virgo meridionalis alsoprovedtobe indicator species of the riparian forest quality index and C. boltonii of the more inclusive ECOSTRIMED, which assesses the overall conservation status of the riverine habitats. The information obtained on habi- tat preferences and indicator value showed that adults of these taxa may constitute a valuable tool for preliminary or complementary cost-effective monitoring of river status and restoration practices as part of a broader set of indices reflecting biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. -

No part of this thesis may be copied, reproduced or transmitted without prior permission of the author Immigration and Integration in a Mediterranean City: The Making of the Citizen in Fifteenth-Century Barcelona Carolina Obradors Suazo Thesis Supervisor: Professor Luca Molà Abstract. This thesis explores the norms, practices, and experiences that conditioned urban belonging in Late Medieval Barcelona. A combination of institutional, legal, intellectual and cultural analysis, the dissertation investigates how citizenship evolved and functioned on the Barcelonese stage. To this end, the thesis is structured into two parts. Part 1 includes four chapters, within which I establish the legal and institutional background of the Barcelonese citizen. Citizenship as a fiscal and individual privilege is contextualised within the negotiations that shaped the limits and prerogatives of monarchical and municipal power from the thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries. -

KRICHBAUM has been approved for the Department of Biological Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences by Willem Roosenburg Professor of Biological Sciences Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 Abstract KRICHBAUM, STEVEN P., Ph.D., May 2018, Biological Sciences Ecology and Conservation Biology of the North American Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) in the Central Appalachians Director of Dissertation: Willem Roosenburg My study presents information on summer use of terrestrial habitat by IUCN “endangered” North American Wood Turtles (Glyptemys insculpta), sampled over four years at two forested montane sites on the southern periphery of the species’ range in the central Appalachians of Virginia (VA) and West Virginia (WV) USA. The two sites differ in topography, stream size, elevation, and forest composition and structure. I obtained location points for individual turtles during the summer, the period of their most extensive terrestrial roaming. Structural, compositional, and topographical habitat features were measured, counted, or characterized on the ground (e.g., number of canopy trees and identification of herbaceous taxa present) at Wood Turtle locations as well as at paired random points located 23-300m away from each particular turtle location. -
