IMLC 2016 | 4th Raja Aziz Addruse Memorial Lecture (21 Sept 2016)
The 4th Raja Aziz Addruse Memorial Lecture will be held in conjunction with the International Malaysia Law Conference 2016 (“IMLC 2016”). Members are cordially invited to attend the Memorial Lecture, details of which are as follows:

About Zainah Anwar Zainah Anwar is a founding member and former Executive Director of Sisters in Islam (“SIS”), a non-governmental organisation working on the rights of Muslim women within the framework of Islam, and which seeks to end discrimination against women in the name of religion. She is now the Director of Musawah, the SIS-initiated Global Movement for Equality and Justice in the Muslim Family, which brings together activists and scholars working on issues of equality and justice in Muslim contexts.
Zainah was named the most influential Muslim woman in a list of 10 leading women visionaries and changemakers by San Francisco-based International Museum of Women’s virtual exhibition, Muslima: Muslim Women’s Art & Voices. She was also named by Newsweek and The Daily Beast as one of the 150 women “who shake the world”, and by Women Deliver as one of the 100 most inspiring people who have delivered for girls and women.
About the Topic Zainah Anwar will speak on the contestations that have arisen in the use of Islam as a source of law and public policy on issues such as women's rights, minority rights and fundamental liberties in Malaysia.
She believes one of the most profound challenges faced by Muslims today is the urgent need to reconcile the teachings of Islam with human rights, women’s rights, and democracy, which constitute the dominant ethical paradigm of the modern world. She will share the paradigm shift in scholarship that reconciles Islam with women and human rights, and speak on the new forms of activism in the Muslim world, advocating the possibility and necessity for equality and justice within an Islamic framework.
