  • Ungku Aziz's Perspective on 'Development'
Türkiye İslam İktisadı Dergisi, Cilt 2, Sayı 1, Şubat 2015, ss. 1-15 Turkish Journal of Islamic Economics, Vol. 2, No. 1, February 2015, pp. 1-15 UNGKU AZIZ’S PERSPECTIVE ON ‘DEVELOPMENT’ M. Syafiq BORHANNUDDIN1 Abstract This paper explores some key insights and lessons from Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz bin Ungku Abdul Hamid (born 1922 – present), a celebrated academician in Malaysia, on development. Drawing from Ungku Aziz’s main articles, papers and books, the paper attempts to make wider connections with regards to Ungku Aziz’s endeavour in development. This paper sheds new light and draw lessons on the meaning of ‘development’ and its implications to the Muslim community. The main finding indicated that Ungku Aziz had creatively interpreted ‘development’ geared towards the needs of the local community away from the Western-centric notion and ideals. It is not mere imitation of modern Western conception of ‘development’, nor is it a wholesale rejection of it, but it is a creative interpretation that takes into consideration the economic reality as well as the spiritual, social and cultural well being of the local community. This study also revealed that the Ungku Aziz’s conception of ‘development’ has significant relationship with the right theological and civilizational interpretation of the religion of Islam. This paper contends that Ungku Aziz’s conception of ‘development’ should be expanded further using the right religious and civilizational framework as part of the continuous civilizing process of the Muslim world. Keywords: Ungku Aziz, Economic Thought, Development, Education, Well-Being, Malaysia 1.Introduction The 20th century saw the imposition of key concepts from a dominant civilization—the West—to the rest of the world.

The Malaysian Intellectual:A BriefSari Historical 27 (2009) Overview 13 - 26 of the Discourse 13 The Malaysian Intellectual: A Brief Historical Overview of the Discourse DEBORAH JOHNSON ABSTRAK Kertas ini memperkatakan wacana yang melibatkan intelektual di Malaysia. Kata kunci: A Samad Ismail, intelektual, wacana, Alam Melayu ABSTRACT This paper focuses on the discourse in Malaysia concerning intellectuals. It asserts that in concert with political and sociological changes, the ‘field of meanings’ associated with the concept of ‘the intellectual’ and the actual social location of intellectual actors have undergone considerable change during the twentieth century. This flags the challenge for historians who are telling today’s stories about the past in today’s terms, but who have to try to understand that past on its own terms. Further, it flags the challenge for social scientists to not merely appropriate the concepts of past scholars in tying to understand the present, but rather to also understand the context in which those ideas had relevance.

  • THE POLITICISATION of ISLAM in MALAYSIA and ITS OPPONENTS Alexander Wain*
THE POLITICISATION OF ISLAM IN MALAYSIA AND ITS OPPONENTS Alexander Wain* Abstract: This article profiles four prominent detractors of Islam’s politicisation in contemporary Malaysia. While much ink has been spilt profiling the promulgators of politicised Islam, whether in Malaysia or elsewhere, comparatively little has been written about those who oppose it. This article is a modest attempt to rectify that deficiency. It begins, however, with a brief history of that politicisation process as it has occurred in Malaysia, with particular reference to Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM). This brief overview traces Malaysia’s unique form of politicised Islam to late twentieth-century intercommunal tensions driven by Malay poverty and cultural anxiety. These enabled long-standing ethno-religious associations to facilitate a blending of Islamist ideology with issues surrounding Malay rights. It is within this context that we then examine the social and educational backgrounds, principal publications, records of activism, and ideological positions of four prominent critics of Malaysian Islam’s politicisation, namely: Chandra Muzaffar, Zainah Anwar, Marina Mahathir, and Siti Kasim. The article concludes that all four figures differ from their counterparts in PAS and ABIM by possessing Western-orientated backgrounds, a long-standing dedication to multiculturalism, and a desire to orientate their work around human rights- based issues. The article concludes by suggesting how (or if) these detractors can impact the future direction of Malaysian politics. Keywords: Islam, Malaysian politics, PAS, ABIM, Chandra Muzaffar, Zainah Anwar, Marina Mahathir, Siti Kasim Introduction This article presents short contextualised biographies of four prominent opponents of Islam’s politicisation in contemporary Malaysia.

  • Home Truths: a Global Report on Equality in the Muslim Family
Musawah (‘Equality’ in Arabic) is a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family. Musawah builds on decades of effort to reform Muslim family laws that discriminate against women and to resist regressive amendments demanded by conservative groups within society. Musawah was initiated by Sisters in Islam (Malaysia) and a planning committee of Muslim activists and academics from eleven countries. Musawah is pluralistic and inclusive, bringing together NGOs, activists, scholars, practitioners, policy makers and grassroots women and men from around the world. Participation is based on proven commitment to promoting rights in Muslim families, whether from religious, secular or other perspectives. Compiled from reports submitted by national level organisations and activists in 30 countries, Home Truths provides background information about the family laws and practices in these countries, including details of why equality in the family is necessary and the opportunities available that make equality in the family possible. Musawah calls for equality, non-discrimination, justice and dignity as the basis of all human relations; full and equal citizenship for every individual; and marriage and family relations based on principles of equality and justice, with men and women sharing equal rights and responsibilities. The time for realising these principles in our laws and in our daily lives is now.
