  • Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Subjectivity In American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, The Body, The Grotesque, and The Child. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

So many travel there, I‘m going now while I‘m still young my darling meet me there Wish me luck my lovely I‘ll send for you when I can And we‘ll make our home in the American Land. 1 The words “American Land”, made famous by the US singer-songwriter Pete Seeger and translated from a 1940’s song by Andrew Kovaly, a Slovakian immigrant, would appear to point to a sense of hope and plenty, referring to a place where the poem’s protagonist could fulfill his desire of a decent job and a home in the promised land.

  • When We Were Together
When We Were Together Foreword The OCHS Magazine of Literature and Art is a student-run publication to honor student art and to connect over the universal emotions of love, loss, and teenage angst. This year is distinct in many ways, with the sudden death of a member of our study body and other instances of grief, big and small. Naturally we seek community to experience these emotions together, to delight in the wonderfully mundane moments of life, and to viscerally endure the painful. Please do not feel the need to read memorial pieces if they will negatively impact your well-being. After 3 years of working with Mr. Hellman and the other lovely editors, I am pleased to present my final edition of the magazine; we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did curating it. -Kristen Burris Editors: Jakob Anderson Jessica Niemetz Kristen Burris Jared Reeves Erin Esterburg Sarah Trusty Alec Hankins Advisor: Greg Hellman The ceramic figure on our front cover, “Confidence” and back cover “Confidence (reverse)” was created by Kelby Beyer. • 2021 Breeze Show Choir Catalog
Previously Arranged Titles (updated 2/24/21) Specific details about each arrangement (including audio samples and cost) are available at https://breezetunes.com . The use of any of these arrangements requires a valid custom arrangement license purchased from https://tresonamusic.com . Their licensing fees typically range from $180 to $280 per song and must be paid before you can receive your music. Copyright approval frequently takes 4-6 weeks, sometimes longer, so plan accordingly. If changes to the arrangement are desired, there is an additional fee of $100. Examples of this include re-voicing (such as from SATB to another voice part), rewriting band parts, making cuts, adding an additional verse, etc. **Arrangements may be transposed into a different key free of charge, provided that the change does not make re-voicing necessary** For songs that do not have vocal rehearsal tracks, these can be created for $150/song. To place an order, send an e-mail to [email protected] or submit a license request on Tresona listing Garrett Breeze as the arranger, Tips for success using Previously Arranged Titles: • Most arrangements can be made to work in any voicing, so don’t be afraid to look at titles written for other combinations of voices than what you have. Most SATB songs, for example, can be easily reworked for SAT. • Remember that show function is one of the most important things to consider when purchasing an arrangement. For example, if something is labelled in the catalog as a Song 2/4, it is probably not going to work as a closer.
