WhenHughie runs awayThe Moffats schooland hides The Moffats a train, Rufus follows him, and a helpfulengineer gets The Moffats back just in time for lunch. Mama, who canalways find the good side ofanysituation, reminds the childrenthat no one willtryto buyit while someone inside has scarlet fever. Inthe meantime she entertains themallwithstories of whenshe lived inNew York Cityas a younggirl.

EventuallyRufus recovers and the scarlet fever quarantine signcomes downfromthe Moffats' house. Soonone family, the Murdocks, becomes interested inthe yellow house, but theycannot make up their minds to buyit or not. The Moffats get verytired ofhavingone or more ofthe Murdocks always comingbyto pester the familywithquestions and The Moffats about their home. Finallythe house does sell, and the Moffats move to a little house witha longfront yard and a tinyback yard.

The Moffats' new house turns out to have a girlJaney's age right next door. The girl, NancyStokes, is friendlyand tells Jane Moffat that theymight turnout to best friends one day.

Inthe end, "Estes celebrates varietyas the source ofpleasure and growth. The Moffats was quite wellreceived whenit appeared.
