(Freepik pic) GEORGE TOWN: An activist who fought against poor air quality due to open burning by illegal recycling factories in Sungai Petani has revealed that she moved out of Kedah due to such pollution. Having spent most of her life in the northern state, Persatuan Tindakan Alam Sekitar (PTAS) Sungai Petani’s Lydia Ong, 56, said her health was affected by the open burning, which continued unabated despite three years of campaigning by her group. She said she moved back to Penang six months ago after the acrid smell of burnt plastic became worse during the movement control order (MCO), and had even endangered her life because she was already suffering from breathing problems. At a forum organised by C4 Center today on imported waste, Ong said Kedah remained home to “hundreds” of illegal recycling factories burning non-recyclable waste in the wee hours of the morning despite repeated claims by the state that it would crack down on such operations. She added that with Covid-19 ravaging the Kuala Muda district, where Sungai Petani is located, the factories operated with impunity. Ya said his branch oversaw over 1,000 pollution sources in the districts of Kuala Muda, Yan and Sik, covering over 2,800 sq km, despite having only 13 personnel, of which, nine were field staff. He said with the lack of workers, enforcement was difficult and their scope was strictly limited to environmental pollution and impact studies. He said recycling factories fell under the jurisdiction of the local authorities and the local government ministry. She said bribes had allegedly been paid to politicians in Selangor to not conduct raids, while in Sungai Petani, enforcement officers purportedly received large sums of money not to take action against illegally operating factories. Wong said there had been claims of businessmen from China running “syndicates” in the waste recycling value chain, too. A thug-related assault against a whistleblower happened in Sungai Petani after a complaint against an illegally operating factory was lodged. Accepted 23 December, 2010 Adult stoneflies (Plecoptera) were light-trapped monthl from January to December 2008 in Tupah River, Kedah, Malaysia. Two families of Plecoptera, Perlidae and Nemouridae were represented with nine species. More Plecoptera was collected in the wet seasons especially for the family Nemouridae. Neoperla asperata was a common species that occurred throughout the year. Neoperla fallax was equally common but this species was absent during early part of the year. The percentage of females was higher than male for all species of Plecoptera collected. Key words: Upstream river, Plecoptera, season, sex ratio, peninsular Malaysia. NURUL MURSHIDA BINTI MOHD SABRI v ABSTRACT This report deals with flood problem which is usually happened in Malaysia when it coincides with monsoon and gave harm and damages to human life, as it had took many lives each time it happens. A case study of flood is going to be conduct to analyze the pattern of water level and to determine other causes that contributes to the flood. The main aim of the study is to minimize the effect of flood problems. It is also used to develop high accuracy model utilizing Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in predicting flood. Furthermore, it used to forecast flood occasion in the study area of station number of 5606410 of Sungai Muda (Jambatan Syed Omar) which is the main river that supplies water to Kedah and Penang. Besides, it used to investigate whether water level data alone can be used to produce modelling and to determine whether ANN is functioning in the forecasting. In this case study, a computational model will be used to stimulate the input data and generate the result, which is called Artificial Neural Network. ANN, which are modelled on the operating behaviour of the brain, are tolerant of some imprecision and are especially useful for classification and function approximation or mapping problems, to which hard and fast rules cannot be applied easily.

Merr. , Moraceae), is a major crop in Malaysia but the distribution of genetic diversity in the crop and its putative wild progenitor, “bangkong” (Artocarpus integer var. silvestris Corner), have not been studied. To investigate the diversity and origins of cempedak, we assessed the genetic diversity of cempedak and bangkong, explored geographic patterns in genetic structure and differentiation, and conducted phylogenetic analyses. We also tested whether cempedak cultivars were true-to- type. We used 12 microsatellite loci to genotype 269 cempedak and 187 bangkong individuals from Peninsular Malaysia, 64 cempedak individuals from Borneo, and 12 cempedak samples from other regions. We found that the number of effective alleles (Ne), allelic richness (Ar), Shannon’s Information Index (I), and expected heterozygosity (He) were higher in bangkong populations than cempedak populations, but cempedak populations harbored alleles not found in bangkong populations. In contrast, Borneo cempedak showed overall lower genetic diversity compared to Peninsular cempedak. Both bangkong and cempedak exhibited weak geographic structure within Peninsular Malaysia; but we found evidence for isolation-by-distance among bangkong populations, as well as increased genetic structure in cempedak at a broader geographic scale.

In 2018, the population of this village was approximately 300. Agriculture is the main economic activity, followed by logging. Educational institutions range from pre-school to primary school only. INTRODUCTION Bukit Selambau is a village that is near to Sungai Petani. This new village was established before 1957. When we reached the village, we interviewed Mr Lim and his father. Both of them were previously village heads. They briefed us on some of the unique places in the village. The villagers prefer to do grocery shopping, make social visits and visit the doctor in Sungai Petani, which is about 20 km away. Its current population is approximately 300. When the village was first founded, it had a population of 800. Over the years, the population declined. HISTORY This village was formed before 1957. Most of the villagers chose to stay in the jungle. After World War II, the British colonial government set up a series of Chinese settlements in a 12-year state of emergency. This was to prevent the Chinese in the rural areas from making contact with the Malayan Communists in the forest. These concentration points later became new villages where the Chinese lived. ECONOMICS ACTIVITIES We also interviewed the village head in Bukit Selambau. He told us agricultural activities included rubber plantations and the oil palm sector.
