Funds raised from The Bash will ensure that MPAC continues to serve as an anchor for arts and culture in our region. EVENT OVERVIEW This annual gala is a signature fundraising event benefiting MPAC’s performing arts experiences that serve hundreds of thousands in Southeastern Wisconsin each year. As the hub for high-quality arts experiences, MPAC is enriched in its mission through the dedication of individuals and businesses that advance the arts and culture of our region. As we move through the COVID-19 pandemic, we are structuring the event this year with the option for either in-person or virtual attendance. He was previously seen in the NBC television special, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!,” alongside John Legend, Sara Bareilles, and Alice Cooper. He recently appeared in the Broadway revival of Once on This Island and as Sweeney Todd in the Off-Broadway production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Barrow Street Theatre, receiving the AUDELCO Award for his performance. In May of 2014, he made history as The Phantom of the Opera’s first African American Phantom on Broadway. He has been seen on PBS in the Live From Lincoln Center productions of Showboat with Vanessa Williams, Norm Lewis: Who Am I?, and New Year’s Eve: A Gershwin Celebration with Diane Reeves, as well as American Voices with Renée Fleming and the PBS Special First You Dream – The Music of Kander & Ebb. He can be seen recurring in the VH1 series, Daytime Divas, also alongside Vanessa Williams. His additional television credits include Better Things, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Bull, Chicago Med, Gotham, The Blacklist, and Blue Bloods, as well as in his recurring role as Senator Edison Davis on the hit drama Scandal. Mr. Lewis is a proud founding member of Black Theatre United, an organization which stands together to help protect Black people, Black talent and Black lives of all shapes and orientations in theatre and communities across the country. He received Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle award nominations for his performance as Porgy in the Broadway production of The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess. Other Broadway credits include Sondheim on Sondheim, The Little Mermaid, Les Misérables, Chicago, Amour, The Wild Party, Side Show, Miss Saigon, and The Who’s Tommy. In London’s West End he has appeared as Javert in Les Misérables and Les Misérables: The 25th Anniversary Concert, which aired on PBS. His additional film credits include Magnum Opus, Winter’s Tale, Sex and the City 2, Confidences, and Preaching to the Choir. By FRANK RIZZO Operatic aspirations are replaced with the accessibility, theatricality and showbiz savvy of a Broadway musical in Diane Paulus' bright, beautiful and tuner-centric re-envisioning of "Porgy and Bess." The show makes its world preem at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., before opening Jan. 12 on the Rialto. After the brouhaha over statements from the creative team -- with a slap from Stephen Sondheim in a letter to the New York Times and subsequent back-and-forths in social media -- the show itself can now be judged on its own merits. While entertaining, engaging and exceptionally well-acted, something is lost, too, in the scope of the score. The work's new passions -- while musical-theater "real" -- are now earth-bound, making it more "folk" than "opera." Still, the handsome and in many ways appealing show, with its stars -- not the least of which is Audra McDonald giving another multi-layered and gorgeously sung perf -- and the familiarity of the Gershwin-Heyward score should prove to be a big box office draw.

This Encores! Special Event, directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator John Doyle, with choreography by Parker Esse and musical supervision by David Loud, was conceived by Peter Gethers, Jack Viertel and John Doyle, and will run for seven performances, November 13 – 17 at City Center. The cast will include Cyrille Aimée, Jeremy Jordan, Norm Lewis and Bernadette Peters with dancers Meg Gillentine, Tyler Hanes, Grasan Kingsberry and Elizabeth Parkinson. A BED AND A CHAIR: A New York Love Affair, presented by the combined forces of City Center’s Encores! program and Jazz at Lincoln Center, celebrates love in New York and love of New York. New York, NY, December 7, 2015—Encores! Artistic Director Jack Viertel today announced the creative teams for New York City Center’s 2016 Encores! season. J. Bernard Calloway, Chuck Cooper, Marva Hicks, Carly Hughes, LaChanze, Norm Lewis, Forrest McClendon, and J.D. Webster will star in Vernon Duke and John Latouche’s jazz‐filled fable Cabin in the Sky, running for seven performances at City Center from February 10—14. The 1940 musical will be directed by Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago‐Hudson with choreography by Camille A. Brown. Originally produced in 1940, Cabin in the Sky followed Porgy and Bess in celebrating African‐American music and dance traditions. The musical tells the story of “Little Joe” Jackson, a charming ne’er‐do‐well who dies in a saloon brawl and is given six months on earth to prove his worth to the Lord’s General (Norm Lewis) and his long‐suffering wife Petunia (LaChanze), while resisting the temptations of the Devil’s Head Man (Chuck Cooper). Duke’s score, featuring the jazz hit “Taking a Chance on Love,” will be restored to its original glory for Encores!, thanks to the generous support of The Joseph S. and Diane H. Steinberg Broadway Musical Restoration Fund. The original orchestrations for Cabin in the Sky no longer exist and will be recreated by Tony Award winner Jonathan Tunick.
