Tonight, The National High School Musical Theater Awards, established by Nederlander Alliances, LLC and Pittsburgh CLO, will present a national award for excellence in high school TO JIMMY musical theater by recognizing the Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor. The Jimmy Award, named in honor of legendary Broadway theater owner and producer James M. Nederlander, will be presented to two students chosen from a talented group of performers, nominated by 16 professional theater organizations. From the Gerard and More than a competition, The National High School Musical Theater Awards recognize individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance by high school students and also Irma Oestreicher Family honor commitment to excellence in performing arts education. Students participating in tonight’s awards program have participated in five days of rehearsals, master classes and private coaching in preparation for this collaborative and competitive musical showcase.     AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE DETERMINANTS OF THE RUN-TIMES OF BROADWAY MUSICALS A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Katie Ferguson May 2011 AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE DETERMINANTS OF THE RUN-TIMES OF BROADWAY MUSICALS Katie Ferguson May 2011 Mathematical Economics Abstract With an economic impact of $9.8 billion in the 2008-09 season alone, Broadway as an industry which should be economically studied. Currently there is a large gap in scholarly literature about Broadway with only three quantitative studies having been performed. This thesis aims to help fill this gap by building off of these three studies to determine which factors influence the success- measured as total days on Broadway from opening to closing night- of a Broadway musical. This thesis focuses specifically on musicals as they have been shown in all three empirical studies to have longer runs and a larger economic impact than Broadway plays. The econometric analysis finds many variables- such as a movie version of the musical being released, and winning the Tony for Best Musical- that are predictive of loner run times. Revivals are found to have substantially shorter run times than original runs and over time, musicals are lasting longer. Liberating Female Sexuality in Joe Wright’s 2012 filmic adaptation of Anna Karenina Introduction “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,” opens Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Although this novel focuses on the dysfunction, consequences, and repercussions of family, I will turn my focus onto how women are represented in this novel, and more importantly in the 2012 Joe Wright film adaptation of Anna Karenina. I’ll be examining mis-en-scene, which is “what the viewers notice most of all film techniques” (Bordwell & Thompson, 112), and this category often encompasses setting, costuming, makeup, staging, and for my purposes, score. Within my interpretation of the film, the mis-en-scene switches the spotlight from families, onto the female characters. Within this classic novel, Anna Karenina, the married “belle of St. Petersburg society” (film), has a passionate affair with a young Cavalry officer, Count Vronsky. The two other main female protagonists are: Kitty, a young girl just beginning her coming out into society at a grand ball, and Dolly, her sister, who is married with ten children to Anna’s brother, Oblonsky. Levin, Oblonsky’s friend, falls in love with Kitty and proposes, keeping in mind that he must compete with Count Vronsky for Kitty’s affections. Meanwhile, Levin and Kitty, follow the traditional love story, and Oblonsky and Dolly struggle through issues created by his affair. It is an understatement to say that both the film and novel focus on families, but I’d like to center around the female protagonists: Anna, Dolly and Kitty.
