New Taxa and Combinations in the Myoporaceae
J. Adelaide Bot. Gard (15)1 75-79 (1992) NEW TAXA AND COMBINATIONS IN THE MYOPORACEAE R.J. Chinnock State Herbarium, Botanic Gardens, North Terrace, Adelaide, 5000. Abstract Two new subspecies in Myoporum, M. boninerzse subsp. australe and M. platycarpum subsp. perbellum and two new subspecies in Eremophiia, Eremophila bowmanii subsp nutans and E. divaricata subsp. ccdlewatta are described. The following new combinations are made: Eremophila debilis, Eremophila bowmanii subsp. latifolia, Eremophila oppositifolia subsp. rubra and Eremophila latrobei subsp. glabra. In preparation for the Myoporaceae treatment in volume 3 of the Flora of New South Wales expected to appear soon the following new subspecies are described and new combinations made. 1. Myoporum boninense subsp. australe Chinnock, subsp. nov. Fig. 1.A Pogonia glabra Andr., Bot. Repos. 4: t. 283 (1803). Type: Bot. Repos. 4: t. 283. Myoporum ellipticum R. Br., Prod. 515 (1810), nom. Meg. Type: R. Brown s.n. [Bennett No. 28021, Port Jackson, no date (BM, K). Myoporum acuminatum var. ellipticum (R. Br.)Benth. based on Myoporum Myoporum insulare sensu Beadle, Carotin & Evans, FI. Syd. Region edn 3: 507 (1982). a subsp. boninensi corolla intra hirsuta, floribus (1-) 2-5 (-8) in axillis differt. Type: north side of Batemans Bay, New South Wales, R.J. Chinnock 6654, 8.ii.1986 (holotype: AD; isotypes: BRI, NSW, TI). Notes The cultivated plant upon which Andrews based Pogonia glabra originated from New Holland and was first raised from seed in England by a Mr Robertson in 1790. The plant depicted in Andrew's plate was drawn at the Hammersmith Nursery and as far as I can determine no pressed specimen was preserved. -

I have been awaiting material for inclusion, however, it has not arrived and I am left with delaying further or having to compile it with limited resources. The list of species eremophilas has created some interest outside of the Study Group. I have had several requests for it and have been able to make contacts with people who were previously unaware of the existence of the Group. I will make further reference to the ASGAP Conference in a separate item, however, I do wish to acknowledge the sterling conlributions of Chris Strachan, who supplied a large collection of cut flowers for the display and of Norma Boschen, who with her husband Keith, helped with their cut flowers and potted plants, as well as spending a good deal of time assisting with the construction of the display and with being present on the Tuesday night to help with information etc. Also I would like to thank my wife Mymie for her great contribution at all times. I had hoped to make some analysis of the census returns, however, 1 dm at the moment not quite sure what is relevant and what is not. You will find below a listing of the ten most popularly grown species. I hope to compile a state by state summary for the next issue of the Newsletter. Ongoing management is supported by the Lower Murray Darling Catchment Management Authority FOREWORD 1 FOREWORD This booklet has been prepared as an introduction for visitors to Nanya. Nanya is managed for conservation, research and teaching and affords protection to highly significant environments including two endangered communities and seventeen endangered or vulnerable species. On your visit, please respect these values. NANYA STATION Nanya Station is located in the Scotia country of far western New South Wales and consists of the Nanya Western Lands Pastoral Lease 3281 – Perpetual Leasehold Lot 1244 in Deposited Plan 762778, Parish of Winnebaga, County of Tara. Nanya Homestead complex 2 BACKGROUND The Scotia region has one of the shortest stock grazing histories of western NSW. Along with five other properties, Nanya was created as a pastoral lease in 1927. Previously the area was part of the large Lake Victoria lease and stock grazing occurred only in wet years (Withers 1989). The original lease was taken up by Gordon Cummings in 1927. He first dug a dam near the southeast corner of the property. A larger ground tank and homestead at the site of the present complex was later established. An area around the homestead was cleared and cropped to provide feed for the horses used in digging the earth tanks. The ruins of the original building are located between the shearing shed and Homestead Tank. -

RECOMMENDED LANDSCAPE PLANT LIST LANDSCAPE PLANTS RECOMMENDED FOR THE COPPER COAST REGION Landscaping Policy DEV003 – Attachment 1 PLANTS RECOMMENDED FOR THE COPPER COAST REGION INTRODUCTION This list was compiled by the Copper Coast Council after consultation with a number of plant growers in the Copper Coast region. Organisations consulted included; The Kadina Growing Company Peninsula Nursery Narunga Aboriginal Progress Association Northern Yorke Peninsula Australian Plants Society Factors that were considered when selecting plants for this list included; Suitability to local conditions Sustainability with minimum or no supplementary irrigation Growth characteristics, (plants that are likely to become weeds if they escape into the natural environment have been avoided) Availability It is important to choose the plant that not only possesses the form and function you require, but also suits the conditions that you can provide. The list contains both native and non-native plants. The list is intended to recommend plants that will grow in the Copper Coast region under normal conditions. It is not a complete list of plants that will grow in the region and is not intended to be. The list will be updated on a regular basis as different plants are recommended to Council that meet the required criteria. It is anticipated that the list will be of assistance to developers, landscapers and property owners. A Coastal Garden that displays plants that are suited to front line coastal conditions, second line coastal conditions and the dune environment has been established on the foreshore adjacent to the corner of Riley Road and The Esplanade, North Beach Township. The garden is a living demonstration of plants suited for gardens in a coastal environment. -

As you will have read in Newsletter no. 6, Ken Warnes has relinquished the leader- ship of this study group, but remains an active member and friend to many of us. I think Ken has done an excellent job in organising promoting and achieving much of material value. Unfortunately, due to hi other responsibilities he can no longer pro- duce that newsy Newsletter, consequently this Newsletter has been produced in a new format. Some features which we hope will be regular items are: general news, letters, articles by members, observations or reports on field trips, description of species, and propagation notes or problems. Obviously the above list requires your active participation. After all, we are a Study Group, and unless you personally contribute, material will be scarce and the Newsletter will be of less value to you and others. Please write something for inclusion under one of the above headings. If they ore insufficient then we will create further sections. On this aspect if you would like to see other features, let me know. G.N. PLANT IDENTIFICATION Geoff Needham Since August 1975, all cutting material received in Adelaide from field trips has been given a number prefixed by the letter E for Eremophila. This hos been necessary to distinguish between plants of the some species which come from different locations. Also those unnamed when received or as yet not described ore identifiable, e.g. E. gilesii (W.A. and Centrol Australia) and also Dr. Barlow's No. 1706 and 1710, E. drummondii. HOEKMAN Department of Biology, Pomona College and Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden Claremont, California 91711 ABSTRAcr Quantitative and qualitative features are presented for 28 collections of three genera (Bontia, Er emophila, Myoporum); data on Ofiia are also included since it is sometimes referred to Myoporaceae. Wood of all Myoporaceae represents variation on a basic plan: woods diffuse porous or semi-ring porous; vessels with simple perforation plates; lateral wall pits of vessels alternate and circular, with grooves interconnecting some pit apertures; vessels grouped to various degrees into radial multiples; imperforate tracheary elements all fiber-tracheids with pit cavities 1-5 ~m in diameter (wider on contacts with ray cells), nonseptate; axial parenchyma vasicentric scanty plus, in some species, tan gential para tracheal bands (sometimes terminal); rays multi seriate plus uniseriate (uniseriate almost exclusively in two species of Eremophila); ray cells procumbent exclusively, upright and square in uniseriate rays and in tips of multiseriate rays; rays storied in some species of Eremophila, axial parenchyma variously storied; crystals present in ray cells of some species of Eremophila and in fibers of E. -
