WORLD ENTREPRENEUR'S DAY-2019 21 AUGUST 2019 Theme: Social Entrepreneurs for Social change Organized by Department of Social Engineering, RGNIYD Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament No. 35/2012) Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu - 602105 About Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is an Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament No. 35/2012 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. The RGNIYD functions as a vital resource centre with its multi-faceted functions of offering academic programmes at Graduate, Post Graduate, Post Graduate Diploma, Doctoral level encompassing various dimensions of youth development, engaging in seminal research in the vital areas of youth development and coordinating Training Programmes for state agencies and the officials of youth organisation, besides the Extension and Outreach initiatives across the country. The Institute functions as a think-tank of the Ministry and premier organization of youth-related activities in the country. About the Department of Social Engineering (DSE) The Department of Social Engineering at RGNIYD was established in 2015. The department has started offering programmes of study ranging from Post Graduate Diploma to Doctoral Degree. A two years Master’s Degree in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship is on offer from 2015. This program was launched by Noble Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Founder of Grameen Bank, Bangladesh. Till date two batches have been successfully completed and all of them were placed in prestigious organizations pertaining to social entrepreneurship. This department has wider range across the country in terms of collaboration with reputed institutes and organizations, conducting programs and having students from different parts of the country. The department has setup the Social Business Incubator (SBI) to support the budding social entrepreneurs in terms of providing services such as Mentoring, Networking and Co-working space. Presently, the department is implementing two research projects on Youth and Entrepreneurship issues. WED 2019 Master’s in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MASIE): Master’s Degree in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship is first of its kind in India is being offered in an institute of national importance i.e. RGNIYD. The purpose of the programme is to provide students with a new orientation and way of thinking to organise and lead sustainable development through social entrepreneurship. MASIE programme provides extensive use of theoretical components along with the observation visits, field immersion oriented learning, field work, internships in reputed organizations related to social entrepreneurship. This unique combination of theory, practical exposure and research experience enables the students to shape themselves as social agents towards promoting sustainable society through social entrepreneurship. About the World Entrepreneur’s Day Every year, August 21 is the WED: World Entrepreneurs’ Day. The purpose of the World Entrepreneurs’ Day is to create awareness for entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership throughout the world. WED is the perfect day to celebrate the people who starts a business alone. WED is the day of founders, managers, producers, contractors, industrialists, innovators, administrators, designers and producers. AIBA, the Alliance of International Business Associations invites everyone to organize happenings around the world to promote WED. World Entrepreneurs Day is a great opportunity to push philanthropic, social and ethical business practices via conferences, awards and initiatives. About the Theme After understanding the purpose of World Entrepreneur’s Day, the Department of Social Engineering proposes to organize a set of activities with a theme title “Social Entrepreneurs for Social Change”. The theme will enable various categories of people such as Entrepreneurs, Innovators, Educators, Practitioners and Youth to work for bringing change in the society through social entrepreneurship. Who can participate? There will be a set of programs on the theme including special lectures, panel discussions, brain-storming sessions and games on 21st August 2019. Educators, Innovators, Practitioners, Researchers, Students, Functionaries of social enterprises, Officials from Govt. Departments etc. can participate in this event. Date/Time/Venue As the World Entrepreneur’s Day is being organized on 21st August every year, this year also the event will be conducted on the same date i.e. 21st August 2019 (Wednesday) from 10.00 a.m to 5:00 p.m at Seminar Hall, RGNIYD, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Our Speakers Arun Krishnamurthy Founder- Environmentalist Foundation of India Phone: 9940203871 E-mail: [email protected] Arun Krishnamurthy is an Indian environmental activist who has initiated the campaign of cleaning various lakes across India. He is known for founding the NGO, Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) in 2011 based in Chennai which has its branches in other cities such as Hyderabad, Delhi and Coimbatore. Arun with the organisation has been successful in cleaning at least 39 lakes in the country and having worked in Google before quitting the job to dedicate voluntarily. He was chosen as among the five people for prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise award in 2012 for scientific lake restoration in Chennai. Arun spent his childhood in Mudichur, a village 29 km from Chennai. He studied in Good Earth School located in Naduveerapattu. He has said that he was inspired by a village panchayat head, Dhamodharan who had encouraged people to collect the garbage from the pond to keep it clean. Arun's friend Karthik Shivasundaram was also his inspiration. He enjoys film-making, photography and cycling. Krishnamurthy completed his bachelor's in microbiology from Madras Christian College and worked at Google, Hyderabad for over three years. Arun then went to study in The Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Delhi. He then joined Goodall's Roots & Shoots in India in 2008, an organisation that helps young people to resolve problems within the communities. Arun started with cleaning the Gurunadham Lake in Hyderabad and a lake in Delhi and included several other programmes such as 'Green Gramam', which is a development plan for establishing eco-friendly villages, 'AniPal' which is stray animal care programme and 'Waste Not' which offers waste management solutions. They have set up 19 biodiversity parks in schools. Krishnamurthy is involved in a 16-month project which not only provides physical garbage removal but also puts fencing in the lakes to protect them from human activities as in the case of cleaning beach from Injambakkam to Besant Nagar in Chennai. Arun has further told that they have introduced animal ambulance for street animals and on establishing one animal rescue and a rehabilitation centre in Chennai and Hyderabad by 2015. Shashaank works on pipeline development, pre investment support including due diligence and post investment support to investee companies. As a nominee of GGV and in his personal capacity Shashaank has held membership of boards of companies in education, remote data capture, financial inclusion, health-tech sectors et al. Shashaank has prior experience with start-ups and in financial services. He was member of the start-up team that built ABN Amro Bank’s Commercial Banking Business in India where he was Head of Commercial Banking for North & East and South India. He worked with IDBI Bank and Tata Group prior to ABN Amro Bank. Shashaank is also co-founder of v-shesh (www.v-shesh.com) which is an award winning impact enterprise he co-founded with P Rajasekharan (Raja). v-shesh is listed on Global Diversity List (supported by The Economist)
