Welcome to ordination training on the Diocese of Oxford’s Local Ministry Programme Starting training for Ordained Ministry is a significant moment. We hope you are going to enjoy your training, and learn a great deal about yourself and about God who is calling you to serve in the ordained ministry. During the next 2 or 3 years you will have a great many opportunities to develop your gifts in ministry, and to gain new skills and knowledge. We hope these learning opportunities will provide you with theological tools which will be useful in the future, but the training is also designed to enable you to develop as a person who will be ready to take up a different role in the church. As you know, part of your training is delivered through a collaboration with Ripon College Cuddesdon. This means you are part of a larger institution, benefitting from its resources and with the opportunity to meet a wider group of ordinands. However overall responsibility for your training is in the hands of the diocesan Local Ministry Programme and its staff, overseen by the diocese’s Local Ministry Programme Oversight Body. The Local Ministry Programme is also part of the South Central Regional Training Partnership Local Ministry Framework; this links it with training offered in the Dioceses of Bath and Wells, Guildford, Salisbury and Winchester. We also collaborate with these dioceses and with Sarum College in offering Durham University validated awards. Together we aim: to educate, train and form God’s people for discipleship, mission and ministry in the contexts to which God has called us. 2 B. He is also currently Principal of the LMP and you will meet him at various points during your training. During your training, you will still relate to your DDO. How the Scheme operates: Overview of the training The training you will be doing is designed both for ordinands and also for the development of the parish. It is intended to deepen and extend ALL your journeys of discipleship: It is for Church members who want to join in with the development of their church and parish and take their part in the opportunities which the training has to offer. Ordinands who have been recommended to train towards ordination by the national church. Incumbents who have the responsibility for supervising you in the parish. Local Ministry Team members who are at the heart of the parish development dimension of the training. All 4 groups are walking in the way of the Lord together with the LMP staff who have the responsibility to design and deliver the training, and we need to uphold and pray for each other. There are 5 elements to the training: A. Ongoing learning in your parish/benefice A key part of your training is learning from experience and developing your ministerial role in practice, especially through your continuing engagement with your parish/benefice. You will formally be on placement here throughout your training, and you will have a designated supervisor (often the incumbent) with whom you should meet regularly. You need to put in place a training/partnership agreement with your incumbent (see section L below) to ensure you are both clear about the expectations you have. You need to think about how you can best use your time to grow in ministry, both in terms of the general shape of what you do and then as you study particular topics. For example, if you already preach occasionally, you may agree that you should preach once per quarter during your training, so that you continue to learn more about preaching but don’t have to give too much time to an area of ministry where you already have some experience. When you study mission and evangelism, you might ask to gain experience of an Alpha or Pilgrim course, if you haven’t had this previously. B. A Rolling Programme of Courses Most students are expected to attend the Diocesan Learning for Discipleship and Ministry Course programme. This consists of 10 evenings per term, 3 terms per year, put on in different venues, organised by the Diocese. These courses are also attended by people training for Licensed Lay Ministry (LLM) or for general growth in Christian discipleship. They are a key resource for all church members and everyone who is being drawn into the lay leadership, or who is catching the vision of having a ‘home-grown’ ordinand deployed in their parish/ benefice (and what that can mean for the development of the whole parish/benefice), is strongly encouraged to consider following a number of them. They support and deepen the structured parish development work. 4 Information about the Learning for Discipleship and Ministry courses will be widely available and bookings are made online at http://ldm.eventbrite.co.uk. The Diocesan Local Courses are taught at National Qualifications Framework levels 4 and 5: level 4 is the standard of a first year university course, i.e. just above A level. Each ordinand will have an individual learning track, with a clear pathway drawn up showing which courses will need to be attended. Students will normally be expected to study at the start on Level 4, before progressing on to Level 5. Preparing for Ordained Ministry: The Ordinands’ Programme Formation for ministry happens throughout the training but there are some parts of it designed for ordinands in particular. These are designed partly to cover particular topics of relevance, but also to help you to be formed towards an ordained role through interacting with others preparing for a similar ministry, in class sessions, worship and informal interaction. Each term there is a residential weekend for all ordinands on the Local Ministry Programme. Normally this is shared with ordinands on the Oxford Ministry Course. All will worship, eat and spend time together, though sometimes there will be several teaching programmes, for different year groups and/or for ordinands on the LMP and those on OMC. Each term there will also be a Saturday training day when you will be working together on aspects of ministerial formation and leadership. One of these will be for the whole ministry team, not just for the ordinand. There will also be a termly tutorial Saturday. During this day you will work together on a variety of topics, as well as meeting with your tutor. (On occasion tutors may ask whether you are willing to meet at an alternative time.) There is also an annual two-day retreat. (If this falls late in the summer term, those in their final year of training may not be expected to attend this.) During your training you will also do at least one additional placement, in a setting which is new to you. Placements are negotiated by ordinands and overseen by the Director of Local Ministry Training. 5 OTHER MEETINGS WHICH ARE ALSO PART OF THE ORDINANDS’ PROGRAMME Meetings for Incumbents and Ordinands to reflect together on the way your parish is developing in the autumn term and summer term of each year. These are essential meetings and we ask that you both do all you can to attend.

    CUDDESDON AND DENTON NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN Submission version Cuddesdon: originally an Anglo-Saxon hilltop settlement and still surrounded by open countryside with exceptional far-reaching views 1 SUMMARY 1. This document briefly describes the Neighbourhood Planning process for those who are unfamiliar with it and the village for those who have not visited it. This is followed by an assessment of the village character and then our vision and aims for the plan. It ends with a set of planning policies designed to deliver the vision and aims. 2. Cuddesdon and Denton is a small parish about 6 miles south east of Oxford with nearly 500 people in three distinct settlements – Cuddesdon, Chippinghurst and Denton. 3. Cuddesdon itself is home to Ripon College Cuddesdon, one of the largest theological colleges in the country and well known worldwide. Generations of theological students have appreciated the peace and tranquillity, as well as the stunning views of the surrounding countryside, a defining feature of the village. 4. The church and agriculture have shaped the parish for nearly 1500 years. More recently the Green Belt has maintained the character and protected the wonderful views across to the Chilterns, North Wessex Downs and Garsington. This protection is much valued by residents. 5. Cuddesdon is designated as a ‘Smaller’ unsustainable settlement with minimal services and within the Green Belt and is not expected to grow significantly. Denton and Chippinghurst are not classified meaning that growth is even less likely. 6. The parish has a mixed architectural style with some 28 Listed Buildings and Monuments. The theological college and Parish Church dominate the skyline from all sides.

    A record of a meeting of members of the International Anglican Liturgical Consultation at Ripon College Cuddesdon 3-9 August 2003 Liturgical Formation The meeting began with a celebration of the eucharist at which the Bishop of Salisbury was presider, and convened after a reception and dinner. The chair, Paul Bradshaw, welcomed participants. He thanked those who had made the meeting possible, especially members of the steering committee, members of the England home team (Jeremy Fletcher and Gilly Myers who put together the worship booklets for the week), and John Harper of the Royal School of Church Music. He welcomed Alan Detscher, a presbyter of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut, as ecumenical partner. He also thanked Graham Wolfenden, lecturer in liturgy at Cuddesdon, and Simon Jones, who arranged transportation.. Graham Wolfenden welcomed the meeting on behalf of the Principal of the college. David Stancliffe welcomed the meeting on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury who sent his good wishes. Paul Bradshaw commented on the somewhat remote location of the College and the consequent limitation of amenities. The meeting discussed various housekeeping matters. Paul Bradshaw noted that 61 persons were present, representing 16 provinces of the Anglican Communion. Paul Bradshaw reminded the meeting that this event was not a Consultation. The Consultations were originally held every two years but when it became clear that it was impossible to get wide representation so frequently it was decided that full consultations would be held only every four years and meetings of members would be held at the two-year intervals between them.

  • An Introduction to Ripon College Cuddesdon
    History Cuddesdon College was founded in 1854 by the Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce, for the full- time, residential training of ordained ministers. Another theological college, Ripon Hall, was incorporated in 1975 to form Ripon College Cuddesdon. Non-residential and dual-track ordination training has been offered since 2006 with the incorporation of the Oxford Ministry Course (now the Part Time Pathway PTP) located at Cuddesdon, the West of England Ministerial Training Course (now Cuddesdon Gloucester Hereford CGH) located in Gloucester and Ludlow in 2011, and the inception of the Portsmouth Pathway (PPC) located in central Portsmouth in 2015. Alongside formational training, some students take University of Oxford degrees but the majority undertake Durham University Common Awards (DUCA). Through these pathways and range of courses, the College offers programmes to suit students at different stages of life, various personal circumstances and academic abilities for ministry within the church: stipendiary, self supporting, local ordained and lay ministry. The College is committed to the diversity of the church with students coming from a broad range of Anglican traditions. There are around 100-120 students in training at any one time with a roughly even split between men and women, with the average age of students being between 30 and 35 years. Just under half live in the Cuddesdon community, either as single students or with their families, for one, two or three years, with the remainder training on non-residential pathways. The College also trains Ordained Pioneer Ministers through a collaboration with Church Mission Society, trains Readers through its Gloucester, Hereford and Portsmouth pathways, and offers independent courses to a growing number of lay and ordained students.

    Conference Report “Christian Congregational Music: Local and Global Perspectives” Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford, 1-3 September 2011 Report compiled for the British Forum for Ethnomusicology (http://www.bfe.org.uk/conferencearchive.html ) Dr Muriel Swijghuisen Reigersberg (Independent Scholar) & Laryssa Whittaker (Royal Holloway, London) Sixty-seven scholars – over half of whom were ethnomusicologists – from ten nations participated in this conference, organized by Monique Ingalls (University of Cambridge, UK) and Carolyn Landau (King’s College, London). Together with chair Martyn Percy (Ripon College Cuddesdon), Tom Wagner (Royal Holloway, London), and Mark Porter (City University, London) on the programme committee, they created a stimulating programme that explored congregational music from multiple global and disciplinary perspectives. After a warm welcome, the first plenary explored the idea of performing theology through music. Martin Stringer’s (Birmingham) presentation raised questions about the trivialisation of liturgy in the context of current trends toward comfortableness, intimacy, and musical spontaneity in worship. Carol Muller (Pennsylvania) used her book on the Shembe hymns of South Africa to reflect on what the relationship between theology and performance might look like ethnomusicologically, asking whether “the theological” might only exist in the ephemerality of performance. This was followed by parallel sessions with panels addressing the themes of re-forming identities, replacing binaries, and performing identities. The Christian congregational musics of Chinese Christians based in the UK, Catholic and Protestant churches in Java, Australian Aboriginal Lutherans in Queensland, and HIV- positive Christians in South Africa were explored. The second keynote plenary, “Politics and congregational singing,” included an interactive lecture performance by June Boyce-Tillman (Winchester), who discussed the musical aesthetics and value systems implicit in Western congregational and choral singing.

    ATR/87:2 Why Do We Still Recite the Nicene Creed at the Eucharist? Mark D. Chapman* The Anglican Communion appears to be seeking to rule some in and some out on the grounds of “orthodoxy.” In that con- text, a discussion of the creed in worship may help to illustrate the relationships between doctrine, performance, and practice. This article suggests that F. D. Maurice’s understanding of the use of the creed offers a way forward for Anglicans: the “performance” of the creed as a focus for the name of God becomes far more im- portant than assent to propositions. This understanding might help Anglicans in living with diversity while acknowledging an underlying baptismal unity. Reading the creed as a corporate hymn of praise to triune Love might encourage God-fearing people to live in humble adoration of the One who loves them— without growing anxious about precisely what, or even whether, the other people who are singing God’s praise “believe.” It is hard to know what people make of creeds today. My hunch is that most people, and even most Christians, however pious, do not spend much time reading creeds of any sort, let alone the Nicene Creed. Popular apologetic programs like the Alpha Course are, per- haps rather surprisingly, distant from the creeds, and instead focus on a few selected articles and a few things (like particular models of the atonement and charismatic experience) which are not in the creeds at all. In fact, the most likely place to encounter creeds is not in any teaching situation at all, but instead at a service in a church which uses a formal liturgy.

    Paula Gooder was a lecturer in Biblical Studies at Ripon College Cuddesdon and then at the Queen’s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education for a total of 12 years before beginning to work freelance as a writer and lecturer in biblical studies. She is a visiting lecturer at King’s College London, a research scholar at the Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham and an associate lecturer at St Mellitus College. She is also a Reader in the Diocese of Birmingham, Canon Theologian of Birmingham and Guildford Cathedrals and a lay canon of Salisbury Cathedral. Her previous books include Exploring New Testament Greek: A Way In (co-authored with Peter Kevern, SCM Press, 2004), Only the Third Heaven? 2 Corinthians 12.1–10 and Heavenly Ascent (T. & T.     ATR/90:2 Sacred Sagacity: Formation and Training for Ministry in a Church of England Seminary Martyn Percy* Introduction I suppose that the first and most obvious thing to say about the purpose of ordination training—formation and education for min- istry—is that it isn’t immediately obvious. What, after all, is one being prepared for? As Urban Holmes III presciently observed more than thirty years ago, the roles and tasks of the clergy are not nearly as pal- pable in the late twentieth-century North Atlantic as they might have been one hundred years earlier.1 It almost goes without saying that if the professional status of clergy is somewhat ambivalent, then the training and formation that seminarians (or ordinands) receive is also likely to reflect this.2 Yet this is not quite so. Students preparing for or- dained ministry—in whatever institution they are being trained, formed, and educated—can point to a curriculum, usually with a mul- tiplicity of options but also a “core,” and to some kind of disciplined approach to prayer and worship. They can point to an ecclesial tradi- tion that at least adds some kind of accent to the ethos of the institu- tion, and to some practical assignments that continue to test the depth and trajectory of a vocation.     The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Awards Lambeth Palace 06 April 2018 Citations in Alphabetical Order The Right Reverend Mouneer Anis - The Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation for his outstanding contribution as a catalyst for peace building, bridge building and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims, especially in Egypt. Bishop Mouneer Anis’s contribution to the work of peace and reconciliation is invaluable. He has been instrumental in creating an ambitious, internationally acknowledged project, ‘The Imam Priest Exchange’, which has brought hundreds of Priests and Imams together to learn about one another’s traditions and beliefs and to commit to working alongside one another. His vision and efforts have enabled this programme to consist not simply of meetings, but of tangible follow up projects at grassroots level. Bishop Mouneer has made a unique contribution and example through his ability to establish deep relationships - largely through his openness, creativity and ambition to move people towards reconciliation. At times, this inevitably makes him a counter-cultural voice within his setting. Particularly of note is his role as a bridge builder in the Anglican Church’s most important official international Christian/Muslim dialogue with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and he is a most highly trustworthy representative for Archbishop Justin to the Grand Imam himself. Moreover, Bishop Mouneer is incredibly generous with his time: cultivating relationships with those from different faiths and background whilst running the Cathedral in Cairo, all within a context in which Christians are a vulnerable minority. He also maintains good contact across different institutions, with charitable and political leaders and brings together all these networks for the common good.
