Dave Navarro - Beyond Addiction "Guitar World" (n°? - Février 1994) - Alan di Perna Clean and Sober Dave Navarro lives for today with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. L.A. is burning. A series of wickedly devastating brushfires have encircled the City of Angels, turning the surrounding hills into a raging inferno. But Dave Navarro looks implacably cool as he pilots his black Harley down Ventura Boulevard. The guitarist's newly sprouted goatee gives him a conquistador's air of stony self-possession as he glides along the wide thoroughfare. A bandanna and shades protect his hair and eyes from the pall of smoke and cinders that have made the city's air seem like the mouth of a badly vented fireplace. Angelenos have learned not to let castastrophe interrupt their daily lives, and Navarro is no exception. His bike safely stashed in a "Loading Only" zone, the guitarist enters a trendy coffeehouse--one of those self-consciously bohemian places that could only exist in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. Settling onto a worn antique sofa, he orders a cup of black decaf and a bowl of cereal moistened with fruit juice. "I don't eat dairy," he explains. "No caffeine either. Right now, this is my only vice..." He smiles as he lights the first of many cigarettes. Palo Alto, CA 94304 U.S.A. + 1-415 -842 -6088 [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper describes a study of the ConcertTalk system, a portable audio space that was used for two days. Two-way radios were provided to attendees at Lollapalooza rock concerts, and their use was recorded and analyzed. The study's participants quickly began using the system, used it throughout the day, and found many creative ways for the radios to improve the Lollapalooza concert experience. ConcertTalk's results suggest the utility of studying CHI technologies outside of work places, both to validate and expand the foundational theory of Our growing domain of knowledge in practice. Spanning five Graham decades, Reed’s observant, provocative songwrit- ing has delineated the city’s street life in all its FLEETWOOD grit and glory. The legendary Stooges axeman, 1948-2009: he didn't just play the guitar. BY TIM "NAPALM" STEGALL The first thing you noticed, after seeing the perfect picture of teenage delinquency in quartet form on the cover (and how much the band depicted resembles a prehistoric Ramones, if you're of a certain age), was the sound: Corrosive, brittle, brassy, seemingly untamed. It was the sound of an electric guitar being punished more than played. And the noise got particularly nasty once Mr. Guitar Flogger stepped on his wah-wah pedal. Because unlike whenever Jimi Hendrix stepped on a wah, this guitar didn't talk. It snarled and spat and attacked like a cobra. As the six string engine that drove The Stooges, Ron Asheton didn't play guitar. He played the amp. And the fuzztone. And the wah-wah pedal. In the process, he didn't just give singer Iggy Pop a sonic playground in which he could run riot and push the boundaries of then-acceptable rock stagecraft. ("Ron provided the ammo," says Rolling Stone Senior Writer David Fricke. "Iggy pulled the trigger.") Ron Asheton also changed the way rock 'n' roll was played and energized a few generations to pick up guitars themselves, creating several subgenres in the process. Ron Asheton was found dead in the wee hours of January 6, 2009, in the Ann Arbor home he and brother Scott (The Stooges' drummer) and sister Kathy (muse to a few late Sixties Detroit rockers and lyrical inspiration for The Stooges' classic "TV Eye") grew up in after the family relocated from the guitarist's native Washington, DC. -

Guitarist Dave Navarro and the righteous bass man rap about the good old days and their bad old ways. Dave Navarro and Flea are sitting together on the famous "sideways" rocking chair from the cover of Jane's Addiction's 1988 album, Nothing's Shocking. They're huddled together like two schoolboys on a bus, giggling, exchanging whispered jokes, setting up a force field of friendship to insulate them from the prying eye of the photographer's lens, the glaring floodlights and the coldly appraising gazes of assorted makeup artists, dressers, handlers and assistants. Navarro hates photo shoots. But Flea seems to welcome an opportunity to dress up like his newest heroes, Sixties black power militants the Black Panthers. He's even brought along a Panther uniform (black leather jacket, black turtleneck, black beret, wraparound shades) for Dave. When the world first saw the "sideways" rocking chair, it was, of course, holding a sculpture of Siamese twins, naked, female, created by Jane's Addiction leader Perry Farrell who set the figures' heads alight for the controversial Nothing's Shocking cover photo. Prepare to be shocked once more, because Farrell has now reconvened Jane's Addiction.
